Renault really went for it with the 172 Cup; all sorts of weight saving. As already mentioned they used lighter cloth seats instead of half leather, lost the air con, lost the spare wheel, removed the ABS, used lighter wheels etc. Even went as far as using thinner (therefore lighter) glass IIRC.

Yeah. 1035kg vs 1021kg. The 172 Cup is 14kg lighter.

Phase 1 steering wheels were leather. The sort of leather which likes to come off onto your hands in warm weather! That's what my old phase 1 was like anyway. :dapprove:

Power saving function probably (kicks in when the CPU isn't under any load). Try running a CPU intensive program in the background (like Prime95) and see if it changes.

Saves weight and costs.

My misses has a 1.2 8v, she averages 33-34 mpg. I got (slightly) more mpg than that in my old 172! Shocking performance:MPG ratio tbh.
