Worse that could happen is dephasher develops a noise and you will have to get belts done again if decide to replace it! For piece of mind get the lot done in one hit and enjoy it without that worry. Only going to save you hundred quid if you risk not having dephasher done anyway.

It's a fair point you make, it certainly isn't an issue him running a 172, just a little awkward if things do go wrong but for the price I'd say these cars are worth the risk.
There is that risk that something could fail even with a well looked after example and there is that doubt whether it is worth the risk selling to a relative due to that very reason. He knows I wouldn't off load it to him if it was a shed but anything can happen with a car this age and it could...
