Well, thanks to @NorthloopCup I have myself a refurbished gearbox back in my hands! Was heading down Manchester way with my mate yesterday so figured I'd go the extra hour South to collect the box rather than pay to get it couriered back up to me. Also ended up buying a set of track wheels on my way home, so it was worth the 650 mile round trip in the end!

So the gearbox only needed 3rd and 4th gear synchros replaced, alongside the usual seals and bearings, but did need a whole new 3rd gear because of this bit of damage caused by my driveshaft roller bearings making a break for freedom last year...

Also had a bit of damage to the pinion gear, here:

Which resulted in Mark (massive thanks to him for this!) replacing the whole crown wheel & pinion setup with one from a ph2 cup box he had lying around, meaning I'll get the advantages of the slightly shorter final drive.

Also got a bolt in plate added for the diff to replace the circlip and get rid of any issues with it popping out:

Aaaaaand all back together:

All the above pics were ones Mark sent me to keep me updated with how it was progressing. Very happy with it all!

Now, onto the wheels! Got a feeling these will divide opinion but I fancied something different to what people usually get for track (Pro Race 1.2's etc). Just by chance I found a set of Pro Race 3's for sale on Friday night and agreed to collect them Sunday when I was down getting the box. Got them trial fitted today, and I actually think they look great! They came with 45 profile tyres on if anyone's wondering why they look a little strange here (who the f**k uses 195/45/15 tyres anyway?!)

Will be staying white since the new shell will be flame red, but weirdly I still like the white on silver look...

That's about it for now. I'm really hoping to get the engine swapped this weekend if everything goes to plan but we'll see how that pans out as the week goes on.

Lol! I was close to telling the guy to forget it and heading home but got them in the end! Cheers mate.

Those wheels are realllllly nice. I think I may have found what I want to replace mine with now!

Thanks mate! They appear to be pretty hard to come by so I snapped them up right away. Also not seen many Clio's with them on. Couldn't find a single photo on here or google images of them fitted to a ph1, so had absolutely no idea if they'd suit the car but the risk paid off!

More progress again this weekend. Can't seem to get one good day at it so it's slow progress here and there, but I swapped what I could of the wiring loom from the engine bay (front lights, main bulkhead connection, fusebox etc), then got the subframe etc all back on and the car into a rolling shell again. Decided to just swap my spax coilies over for now and use them, instead of getting something new. Need to get my steering rack looped and refitted and fire the ARB back on, then it'll be time to get the engine in. Fingers crossed for good weather this weekend to get that done!

Also decided against painting the engine bay after I gave it another clean up and it actually came up quite well! The more time goes on, the less I can be arsed painting 😂 Still, it's looking no bad!

Shame not to paint the bay :/

Silver bay might look good with the red exterior.
I know. The cold weather and not having anywhere decent to paint it is my main problem. And the fact I'm getting to the stage of just wanting a working car to use now lol.

If it doesn't look good I'll maybe see about painting it at the end of this year!

Also added up roughly what I've spent on this so far. Worst. Idea. Ever. 😂
I've kept a running total of what I have spent this winter on it......it will be three times what I bought the car when I get the new exhaust fitted next week.
But like your thinking of not being able to track a house!!

So aye, proper update from today.

Planned on starting about half 8/9ish this morning, and have the engine out by about 10 or 11, leaving loads of time to do the flywheel/clutch and fit the cup alternator setup (minus the power steering pump). Midday came and went and then engine was still firmly bolted in place in the old car 😂 Most of the morning ended up being taken up by looping the power steering rack and refitting it to the new car. I've lost an inner ARB bush though so I'll need to fit that with the engine in place. Can't f**king wait for that...

Anyway, quite pic heavy here, but why not!
Started the day like this

Engine out

Old clutch and flywheel off

Clutch actually looked in very good condition still, but changed it anyway.

New shiny lightweight flywheel on

Then went for lunch. Looked back as I walked to the house...just lol at how much s**t ended up lying around, and this wasn't even the worst of it. No idea how I remembered where all the bolts went back on.

Fitted the cup alternator setup and new belt

Aaannnnddd in!

Called it a day at that, and tucked the car away back in the garage. It's looking more and more like a working car again every day!

That's about it for today. Hopefully tomorrow I can get the exhaust swapped over including the manifold. Had a nightmare with that not being able to get the cat to manifold join off. Didn't have a grinder handy, couldn't be arsed going to get one, so just took the manifold off the engine. Will probably be a squeeze getting it back in now but should be fine. Need to swap the linkage and stuff over too, then the heater matrix, coolant pipework and get the radiator back in.

Will see how much of that I actually manage to get done tomorrow... Still a lot to do yet but it's getting there.

Cracking job youth. Can't wait to see it all done. Gutted me and John couldn't manage to get it on track but I'll be extremely happy to see you do it.

I think they look better white lol! Not that they'll stay that way being track wheels mind you. Will more than likely end up a different colour after they're caked in brake dust 😂

Good effort young man.

I hope it's meeting both your expectations :tongueout:

P.s. I absolutely hate the pair of you for removing that heater matrix! SO much needs to get ripped out to remove mine from the old car and refit it lol!

You've done a not bad job there!
Aye, day went surprisingly well. Was expecting some form of disaster tbh 😂

Spent Sunday there ripping the interior of the old car apart, and removing the fan assembly from under the scuttle panel to try and get all the blower/heater matrix s**t transferred over, but that pretty much ended in disaster when I got impatient and decided to cut the lower dash out around the steering column lol. After that I couldn't get the matrix out so just gave up.

I did manage to get the manifold transferred over though and got the rest of the exhaust off. Removed the gear linkage after that and transferred it over, fitting the new BMS shifter at the same time. Can just see it in this picture. I'm just posting this because the cage looks awesome in it tbh.

Also decided I'd fire on the bonnet and bumper for the first time since I got the car and see how it all looked. The front end might be 2 shades of red and the rear half silver, but it's looking good if I do say so myself!

Emm, apart from that, not much progress. Went back down tonight, stripped back the ABS loom so I could get the brake fluid level wiring out to keep it then bin the rest. Also determined to not have any ABS dash lights when I get the car running. Been studying wiring diagrams and I think I've found a way but will need to wait until it's all up and running to see if it's going to work.
