These are deep scratches in the middle of the disc. It looks rather unlikely to me that they are caused by the normal operation of the pads. I should also mention these are OE discs and pads.

If you're looking for standard sound - Yozza stealth FTW. I have one and I absolutely love it. It's whisper quiet when you're cruising or tootling round town, so there's no need to feel embarrassed or wear a baseball cap ;). When you open the taps it has a beautiful rasp.

Does the cheap ebay one not allow you to clear the fault codes? - i'm pretty sure that's what it says in the description, that you can 'cancel' fault codes. The description for the cheap k-tec scanner says the same. Does 'cancel' not mean 'switch off' or 'reset' ? I'm still finding it difficult...
