I own a Clio GT 1.6 16V 128PS, which has the same TL4 gearbox as the Clio197/200, though different gear ratios...
I'm experiencing very hard shifting when it's cold outside, plus after 26500 miles, some grinding in the 2nd and 3rd gear. Since the car is still under warranty I took it to the...
I also had an opportunity recently to try the Renault Wind, which packs a similar engine to the Clio GT - the one from Twingo RS.
Although being more expensive, the Wind has much poorer interior than the Clio GT (the Twingo RS is even worse in that regard). Wind handles better when pushed hard...
It's been a year since I bought my Clio GT 1.6 16v so I thought I write a little write up on my impressions. I've done 11 250 miles (18 000 km) in year, most of this is everyday city driving plus some spirited drives on B-roads when going on trips. The economy has improved and I averaged 33 mpg...
My impressions after 3625 miles
Cons:
clutch doesn't have a well defined biting point and is a bit spongy
perhaps would have expected better mpg (I'm averaging 28-30 mpg, city driving)
not enough low-down torque
would like firmer suspension
would like bigger wheels with wider track
would like...
Also, as there are only a few differences between the Clio GT and Twingo RS engines (Renualt says cylinder head, camshafts and mapping) someone who does Twingo RS maps can probably do one for the GT...
I've looked around a bit and these guys seem to have something: http://www.evolutionchips.co.uk/chipsearch.asp
They claim 10 HP increase, but I'm more enthusiastic about the torque increase!
I like the seats, for me the support is excellent, but I'm also missing the reach adjustment. If I was ordering the car I would have paid for the card that includes the reach adjustment, but I was in a hurry and bought the car they had in the showroom.
The other thing is, the reach adjustment...
My clutch bites fairly high and I'd like it lowered. On my previous car, the clutch pedal height and where it starts to bite could be adjusted. Is this adjustable on Clios as well? If it is, where?
I've driven the R27 and 200 with Recaros and if I was buying a new Clio RS, I'd definitely go with standard seats. The Recaros hold you in all right, but the lining is too thin making them uncomfortable on long trips, whereas the standard seats are exceptionally comfortable yet I found the...
Re: RenaultSport Clios - great on the right road, rubbish the rest of the time. Discu
I got the impression that Clios 197 and 200 (the Clio Mk3) are much better built than previous ones. Granted, all that I drove were new with a few thousand miles on the clock, but there was no sign of...
Yes, everyone loves the seats! They hold you in perfectly, while being very comfortable.
I agree on the chuckability as well. It's so much fun to drive on swirling country roads, it goes through bends like on rails and has a high grip limit.
To quote a press release:
"Renault Sport Technologies’ engineers have paid special attention to ensure that Clio GT’s chassis combines first class dynamic ability with a comfortable ride. The stiffness of the front springs and the calibration of the front dampers have been uprated by 15 per...
Btw, I experience no excessive wheel spin. In fact I haven't experienced wheel spin at all... The tires (Michelin Pilot Primacy) really surprised me how good they are, the car has lots of grip on dry roads.
To be honest, I'm surprised anyone would have wheel spin problems - it's not a problem...
I definitely wouldn't call it slow. It's not insanely fast either (it's no Clio RS), but there's no mistake it's a sports car. That is, provided you keep the engine screaming and revs between 4500 and 7000 rpms ;)
Admittedly you can't maintain the pace as good as in Clio RS, when you lose speed...
Having my GT now for 3 weeks, I'm surprised how similar GT is to Clio RS in character. You have to rev it really high and then it delivers power, the sound (or scream, if you want) and the fun :D Clio 197 is exactly the same, nothing really happening below 4500, whilst 200 also has some low-end...
I've driven the Fiesta Zetec S and I would say Clio GT is definitely faster. In fact I've eliminated Fiesta after having a test drive as it didn't impress much.
