Shift light on 172 Cup & How old are you?

  X-172 Cup
Q1- I saw a little light come on, on the right hand side of the dash while I was driving 'enthusiastically' and it kind of scarred me 'cos I thought I'd broken my baby which leads me to ask the question is there a shift light on my car/the Cup 172?

Also, I'm geting loads of stick from my workmates who all drive image conscious Audi's & BMW's or 'sensible family cars' they are saying I'm too old for one of these Clio's and that I'm having a mid-life crisis...(the B***ards) - my response to them is that I have always wanted a car that is fast & handles well but could never afford the insurance, now that I'm 35 and a half I can finally afford to pay & insure (fully comp) my new pride & joy - we all know who'll get the last laugh 'cos I'll be passing all of them on the way home from work ;)

So question 2 is am I the oldest fogey on this site? Go on you can tell me, and let me know your age too!

I didn't think the cup had the shift light?

What did it look like? Little green light, looks like a gear stick/knob strangely enough

There is a wide variety of ages on this site, I wouldnt worry about them at work leave them to there sensible cars.

Cup does have the light comes on at 6200-6500 when not warmed up and redline when warmed up.

Old fogey? well im 23 in 3weeks judge for yourself

  cock mobile.
It defo has a shift light, most 172 / 182s do and certainly all Cups.

I think some early Mk2 Ph1 172s were too early and missed it.

All Mk2 172's have the shift light.

Hi,

For my knowledge I think the gear change indicator only glows when you are very close to the rev limiter and not for optimal change.

As for my age, I just turned 30 and I can safely say that I will always have clio RS in the garage. Even if it is my 1st, 2nd or umpteenth car - they are great fun and offer the nearly the best smiles per mile.

PS, who cares what BMW, Audi drivers say. All they did was made an easy choice because they don't know what else is out there.

I stand correct

Was it just early mk1's that didn't have it then?

As for age, im 26. Its your car, and you're the one who has to drive it, so do what makes you happy... people here at my work have much the same attitdue to anything sporty (although i've not come into the "mid-life crisis" comments yet  )

Shift light= yes it does have it but its a "here comes the limiter you should have changed you tool" light rather than an optimum shift light.

As for age you are far from the oldest on here and like the others have said f**k it its your money and you'll be having the most fun in your car.

Why do Renault "brand" it as the "optimum shift light" then?

Because they are morons. You are better shifting before the light comes on, if you wait for it you'll be in the limiter before you can shift in time, plus you will have gone past the point in the revs where the car was delivering the most torque/bhp anyway.

Yeah my 172 has a "shift light" although according to the manual its an over revving light not an optimum shift light its there to warn you that the limiter is about to kick in. It varies from 5k-redline depending on engine temp.
I find that mine feels at its quickest if I change just before the light should come on, but the best way to tell when to change is to get your car on a RR and see where it peaks power that is the optimum change point.

Oh and Im 22 (well for another couple of weeks anyway!)

Marketing/advertising bods are too busy being pretentious and pretenting to be clever by coming up with more random ways to advertise and sell things. Probably spend more time putting columbian up their noses than worrying about technicalities like that.
