new car...zetec s or 1.6 clio?

  02 1.2 Dynamique Clio
hello readers...

im looking to buy a new car this summer (currently have a 1.2 dynamique)..was all set to buy a 172/182 but the insurance was far worse than i had assumed it would be. so i thought i would get another year under my belt in a less powerful car.

i think i have narrowed it down to either another clio..but a 1.6 dynamique, or possibly a 2006 fiesta zetec s. i am still open to other suggestions though. both are very similar insurance-wise and would like to know if anyone knows about the zetec s' performance against a clio??

cheers in advance

zetec s isn't as quick as the clio (its only 99bhp against 110 for the clio) although there isn't much in it

Clio is slightly quicker to 60 and a higher top speed. IIRC the clio has a tiny bit more torque and manages to reach it a little earlier in the rev range.

I personally would say the 1.6 clio (although i am slightly biased having got one myself lol) its especially good if you can get a 54 plate onwards as that was when it was given rear disks and stiffer suspension set up.

how old are you if you dont mind me asking and what quote did you get?
cause this seems a popular upgrade but im not sure how old people are when they do it.

my cousin has a 2000 zetec s. hes 18 and think he pays about £600.

Id get a Civic VTi mate, there not the worst to insure and uber quick in comparison to the above, 158bhp not to be sniffed at!

Cheap!

  renault clio 1.4 si 2000
super cheap! :S i actually have a 1.6 zetec s, a t reg, and a 1.4 clio si. my clio is infinitly more fun to drive, it's quicker, and i love it for all the reasons we love our clio's! the focus is however exceptionally smooth through the gears, the soft suspension feels great in terms of comfort, and it has a big advantage in terms of space obviously. they're older cars than your looking at, but probably not too different, and i would say the clio every time, unless your after practical. and that's not taking into account the extra 10bhp from the 1.6! :D

  clio 172
I have owned a Zetec-s and loved it. I now have a 172 and love that too but for a 1.6 zetec-s it put up a good fight ford most things. I had a 2000 shape in imperial blue the escort cossie colour which is the nuts. It was really reliable too I had it from 3 months old @ 3k miles and sold it at 84k miles and the only work carried out was Top mounbt bushes and tyres so happy days with that. Kind of miss it now with the petrol prices being what they are for Optimax for my 2.0 French petrol Junky LOL;)

If you are considering a clio 1.6 id consider a late saxo VTS. faster than both and losing there chavy image as the owners are ally buying fiesta ST’s it seems to me.

But out of the two id get a fiesta. Handle well, look good And built to be a sporty drive unlike the clio

Keep the 1.2 for a year. You'll lose less in depreciation than the other cars mentioned, build the no claims up and buy a 1*2 in a years time.

its s tough one, really, the fords built better but im not sure how they drive. The clio is a faster car though 0-60 is around 9 secs. ford 10.

I'd probably agree with Warren on that one. I'm 20, unfortunately only having 1.5 years driving experience, and I'm looking at 1*2s myself and the insurance is extortionate (Tesco and Direct Line wouldn't even quote me), so I'm hanging on for a year or so.

In terms of comparison, I have a 1.25 Ford Fiesta, which is great once it's going but it is seemingly a much heavier car than a clio. I personally would go for the Clio, especially if it's only for a year.

Very good point on the VTS although same again on the insurance front, i sold my Saxo for the 172 and whilst im delighted with the 172, i still laugh when i think back to the days when people used to call it slow.

Citroen claim a 0-60 of 7.5 so its anything but, it was the insurance that killed it though i mean it was a group 15 for christ sake:S

another option would be to get a corsa c sri (insurance group 9 i think) then you could join CorsacUK and call your car a "bad boi" lol

  Tiger R6 / Saxo Vts
I'd say Sax o Vts - group 14 instead of the 16 that the 182 is in. My insurance was only about 400 quid, or 35 quid a month ish. Clio took it up to 50 quid a month.

Saxo wasn't a long way behind the 182 I'd say in terms of outright pace, but handled better on the twisties (well, until my coilovers arrive, and then we'll see about that)

Clearly not listening when he said it was the insurance he was worried about then?

Zetec-S is a very good shout.

Or even a VTR which is group 8, but then we'll all disown you. :D

If its pace your after then its got to be the VTS theres not many other n/a 1600cc's out there that will get near it.

Dont be tempted to buy a VTR there utter pish...

I had a 03' VTS and it was terrible for petrol when you gunned it, dont expect much more than 300miles to a tank

  02 1.2 Dynamique Clio
brilliant...thanks alot lads. i test drove the zetec s today on the way home and loved it, much faster than my clio and seemed to have lots of torque from about 3500 revs, even in 5th at 70. the salesman was a bit of a hero, said to me to drive it as if it was my own to get a proper feel for the car.

was nice and well built aswell, as much as i love my clio i cant help but think it feels a bit "lego-ish" where you can just pull all the french pieces off. although, i will be taking all this back in a year or 2 when ive got a 1*2!!

im still open to suggestions if anyone want to give any?!

cheers again guys

I'D TAKE THEM OFF MATE lol

i've always wanted a 172 clio, i'd try looking for a 1.8 16v clio, the ones that look like the williams ones

Er, take your dad off the policy?

a-dddduuuuuuur!!!

haha, i would take him off but its part of some sort of fleet policy with his and mums cars the house and everything else so i cant for some reason. anyway, he said he will keep me on that while im still at college so its no weight on my back!

back to the cars...is there a big difference between the clio and the zetec's top speed? ive been looking around here and google and cant really find a "true" reading. as in not someone lying but not what the book says. any ideas?

I'd get a diesel Clio/Fiesta. Neither are fast, and the better diesels (DCi 106 etc) are just as quick, and much quicker in gear (and cheaply mapped for more grunt) - so if you're gonna have average/low performance, you may as well have good MPG whilst you're at it :)

Although TBH, I'd just keep the 1.2 for another year, get the extra NCD/year of age an save up for a 182.

If it was the mk2 1.6 i would fet that, they are wicked cars, cheap to run and really nippy cars. But if its the new models i would go with the fiesta tbh. I only like the RS mk3's.

Yeh it may be group 8 but some insuance companies won't insure them atall because they have an awful reputation. Their reputations for being stolen, ragged, crashed etc along with the faxt they're always modded makes them more expensive to insure than most group 12ish cars.

ive had clios all my driving life (apart from me jeeps) and this is my 5th one ive had a mk1 1.4 black a mk2 phs1 1.2 8v green, mk2 phs2 1.216v blue, mk2 phs2 16v black and my mk2 phs2 1.6 16v black and i just think there the best specced and looking in there price range.

there all resonably nippy for smaller engned cars and comfy to drive really ,ive driven the saxos vtrs and s's and the 206 and zetec s's and there no where as good really i would recomend the oug 106 gti as its cheap nippy and good lucks but not bessed specced also quite pricey.

go with your heart mate not your head
