New engine need advice 👍🏻

  1.2 Renault clio
I like my car and don’t want to get rid of it but my 1.2 mk3 is tapping. Long story short I’ve took it into a trusted Clio specialist twice and he’s ensured me it’s just the age of the car (he checked the valve clearance and said they were fine).

It’s infuriating me… I hate the noise and I’ve decided to buy a secondhand engine at some point and swap it.

So the question is do any of you guys/girls know what engine from the Clio family I can put into my Clio extreme mk3 2004 without too much hassle?, straight out straight in.

Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks!.

Who was the specialist that you saw?

Comes across as if they cannot be arsed/"what are you spending money on a 20-year-old car for?", kind of attitude to me.

The valve clearances would be my first port of call, depending on the severity of the tap its possible it could a little end. Very hard to be certain solely on a description. Irrelevant of vehicle age it shouldn't be tapping so something certainly a miss somewhere.

He’s a guy down by Westbrom but I don’t wanna out him as he did seem like a good dude because we was chatting for ages and also let me off a few quid on other services I’ve had.

I’m not sure tho you can never trust anyone nowadays. You’re probably right.

See that’s what I thought too man, it’s not anything serious or very loud it’s just fair but deffo sounds like metal on metal towards the top end of the block.

I’ve even done the valves myself (to manual spec) and the tappings still there so I’ve given up lol. I might take it somewhere els first tho see if they can find anything els.

Shouldn't tap just because its old, it may be that the engine is worn however and no adjustment etc is going to solve that.

As Brigsy said, only straight swap will be a like for like D4F, however if you can get a scrappy with a 1.2 TCE that would be my choice, get the engine, box, engine wiring loom, uch/ecu/key. Dont forget the intercooler, downpipe/manifold/turbo etc

set of injectors and a trip to EFI and you will double your cars original power for very little cash!

If you're going to take it elsewhere. You've got Diamond motors in Long Eaton, near Nottingham or Birchdown in Malpas, Cheshire.

Can you not just get the head rebuilt?
Yeah I think if I can save this engine I’ll do what you said. I believe the next best step is take it to a trusted place and see if they believe it’s time for a head rebuild. You wouldn’t know the price for something like that would you?. Thanks.

If it’s just a ticking sound then that’s fairly typical of the d4f in my experience, I had one from brand new and they’re a bit of a tappy engine at the best of times.
