Martin's Clio DCi Van

Recently I bought a new house that's been a bit of a project and has a large garden that I find myself constantly doing runs to the dump and im fed up relying on using my mrs car or putting loads of sheets down in the back of the 220 Trophy to keep it clean, so I went on the lookout for a Kangoo/Clio DCI van.

I had been keeping my eyes on ebay/scumtree/facebook but everything popping up was £1000+ with 140k miles and in typical condition for a 12-18yr old van!

then one night on ebay I see an auction with 30 seconds left to go, a 2001 1.5 DCi van, in white, sitting at £250 with zero bids, a very quick look at the details shows its advertised as spares or repairs, 120k, MOT expired but starts and drives with a few knocks. Another quick look at google maps shows its in Sheffield about 4-5hrs drive away, so I bid £250 and win it with seconds to go!

Messaged the guy and basically said, honest opinion should I bring a trailer down or just drive it up the road? he said it starts, drives, stops just a bit rough, so I packed the Mrs mk4 Clio with tools, tow pole, and anything else I may need and booked an mot local for me to legally get it up the road. Headed down with my mate to collect it.

So here it was in all its glory. a few knocks was an understatement ive never heard wheel bearings so badly worn the full car was shaking the full way home, to make things worse the radio code was needed, i had the app on my phone to get it but no tools thin enough to get the head unit out to get the details!!, luckily I found a pair of ear muffs for sale in a service station so that sorted out the noise, my arms were numb from the vibration by the time I got it home. the rear brakes are also making a horrid noise I assume there is no shoes left!

The little engine runs sweet as a nut, sounds perfect.

by the time I got it home I was close to cutting my losses and driving it straight to the scrappies but I decided first to clean it up and make myself feel better about it before getting my hands dirty!

after attacking it with the clay bar and machine polisher its a cracking little shell, other than the corner of the rear bumper and a bit on the front bumper there is literally hardly a mark on it!

The central locking didn't work from the button on the key so I took it apart and found the button was broken off, so I popped a spare key I had from another car apart to have a look at exactly how it goes back together and soldered it back on that fixed that!..

Next up I pulled the front end apart, got both hubs off to replace the bearings and while I was at it had a look at what it needed. An order went into Euro car parts for:
2x front wheel bearings
2x lower arms
2x track rod ends
2x ARB outer bushes
2x suspension top mount kits

That's all arriving tomorrow so it should be good to start getting back together than ill attack the rear brakes and bearings.

This has the potential to be really good if the shell is as clean as that - totally understand the desire to throw it in the bin if it was that bad getting it home!! But good stuff so far. And yes, needs a certain well known 2.0 putting in :D

Cheers guys, looking forward to getting it on the road and tidied up I've already got a 182 doner car in mind if the boy will let it go cheap enough ??

Need to get a pair of front seats and door cards as they are hideous/dirty/ripped

Will have a look, I like the Dacia one as it slots in perfectly where the 100 one mounts and uses the same pipework, I've got all the spare pipework from a 100 too!!

Pricing seems all over the place with them saw a second hand good condition one for £30 last month kicking myself for not picking it up. Finding good condition 100 ones are getting hard to find although I notice the campus dci70 used the same intercooler!

Yeah dCi 68 use the same setup as the 100

If I were you I’d be picking stuff up all the time if it’s that cheap![emoji23]

I bought a full dCi 100 for parts so I wouldn’t have to buy any large bits for mine for a while[emoji23]

I had no intention of owning another dci or another mk2!! I cleared out my garage recently of all mk2 parts!

got the front end all rebuilt back together with the new lower arms, balljoints, track rod ends, wheel bearings, top mounts, bushes etc and that got it driving sweet, the front dampers are goosed, one is seized solid the other is soft as my first shite. having a think about what to replace them with! they should get it through an mot though lol

A nice bonus was to find the front and nearly new discs, pads and both callipers!

moved my attention to the rear end, more noisy wheel bearings and the rear shoes were down to the metal and making a horrid noise!

a new shoe kit with new brake cylinders, pressed a new pair of bearings in and gave the drums a quick rub down and coat of matt black high temp paint I had lying about from when I painted my old 172 rocker cover!

gave it a full service with new oil, oil filter, air filter and fuel filter

Will do a belt change when/if it passes an mot!!!

whipped off the EGR valve to find it was completely coaked full of soot, however surprisingly not a bit of oil! just dry soot so it pretty much blew out with the air compressor.

I then pulled off the inlet pipe and it was also coaked with soot (thanks EGR valve...) so I attacked that with the degreaser and got it as new!

Let me know if you need any dCi parts.

I may be selling me dCi 100 soon-ish if I can secure a car tonight. I have a garage FULL of dCi 100 parts, mainly the big bits that are hard to find (except an intercooler)[emoji23]

nothing much new happened, took her for an MOT to see what needed done next and it sailed through with not a single advisory! so now on the lookout for a nice set of 15" wheels for it, it needs new dampers at the front as they are past it so need to work out if i want to just put a standard pair on or go for something a bit different and a set of springs!

still on the lookout for cheap Dynamique/initiale/RS front seats!

done over 100 miles in it since its MOT and its running sweeeeet! another plus point is the 220T feels like a rocket ship when I get back in!

been cutting down bushes and taking them to the dump

I like me a dci project as you well know. Wicked that is runs well, that's exactly what you want when buying one of these. Our Dci is exactly the same thing, a piece of poop we don't care about and can take stuff to the tip in without worrying about.

Conveniently... I have a set of 182 half leather front seats going spare ? Leather on the drivers bolster is a bit worn, but they're in one piece.
i was originally looking for non RS seats as they are cheap cheap cheap but id take 172/182 ones if there going cheap!! PM me a price and ill see if I can justify them ?

Got a new Pioneer Bluetooth head unit at black Friday for it for £50 from halfords, wired in the mic up on the pillar at the sun visor where its out the road. Bluetooth calling is better in the van than it is in the 220 trophy now!!

also had to go to the scrappies for 2x new front speakers as they were blown so got some meatier ones from a Dynamique than the poor ones that were in it and while I was there found some special edition 1.2 that had some blue dash strips (but the textured ones like the base modes) never seen them before so picked them up to brighten it up, just need to sort a pair of front seats and door cards to tidy it up inside now
