hansthebear's BG Clio 182 Project Thread

  Clio 172
Hello

Got the Clio bug now for sure!

My silver 172 is currently for sale on here, as this car came up for sale quite close to me and pretty much had everything that I was planning on getting anyway! Shameless plug :http://www.cliosport.net/forum/show...erg-Silver-53-Plate-belts-done-67k-%A31800ono

The car is well known to the forum, and a credit to its previous owners. I plan to make a few changes to make the car my own, but nothing too drastic.

Here is a picture I took of the car when I went to view it:

Took it for a test drive, it drove very well, felt nice and tight, pulled smoothly and obviously really looks the part!

Agreed to buy it for the asking price and picked it up the following day.

I had 3 days off work, and I initially just wanted to have a really good look over the car and clean it all really well.....initially.

All wheels were removed and the underneath inspected and cleaned, likewise the wheels were cleaned and waxed when they were off.

Everything checked out, noticed a few things that I want to change and sort but nothing major. There are no front arch liners and the rear washer jet switch does the fronts, which I think means a new pump is needed. Got these things ordered now. One of the front fog light bulbs was intermittant also.

As I was exploring the car I spotted a few things that I didn't know were present such as aftermarket front speakers and a Renault USB box thing underneath the glove box. I convinced myself that as the belts were due soon-ish and I had a couple of days off, I may as well do them immediately for peace of mind. I think this turned out the be the right decision(see pic in a sec).

So I ordered a dephaser pulley, cambelt and aux belt kit, cam seals, dephaser solenoid seal, and spark plugs.

This time round I didn't dick about taking millions of pictures and was surprisingly productive! Took me about 10 hours altogether this time round which I am quite proud of.

Untitledbyhansthebear,on Flickr

So this is what the current tensioner looked like, it should be noted the cam timing was spot on. I'm not sure if the tensioner can looses as the belt wears? Either way I am glad I decided to do the belts straight away rather than wait until summer.

Here is all the new stuff fitted:

And after spending a bit of time cleaning up the areas behind the headlights, and running over the headlights with the 3000 grit stage of the 3m kit - all back together:

At the moment the only other stuff I've done is take apart and clean the interior, fit a boot net I had already bought, replace the side repeaters as they were green and mouldy, LED front foglight bulbs and a claybar and polish. The paint is quite swirly, my mate will be machine polishing it next weekend hopefully. I ran over it with spray wax just now so any birds**t doesn't stick like glue to the paint meantime.

Thats it for now, I have some Brembo 4 pots that I may fit. Haven't decided yet but a trial fit and pictures will be happening next weekend to see what I think.

Otherwise plans mainly revolve around driving the s**t out of it and enjoying it!

Someone buy the silver one so I can transfer insurance!

Cheers!

  need BRAKES? PM me
Cheers Arran! Really happy with it!

And thanks George, may be after more bits haha

Ha no worries mate, you know where I am if you need anything ;)

Can supply pads for the wilwood 4pots or if you decide to fit the Brembo 4pots can supply various pads for them and also 300mm Brembo scenic discs depending which brackets you go for. Presuming they are 197 front calipers

Keep up the good work!

Glad the car has stayed on the forum :)

Will keep an eye on the project thread for sure. It always felt a quick one tbh. The rear washer jet did that in my ownership, I just never got round to sorting it out

The Tunepoint is worth keeping as its USB and stalk compatible.

Got a few more updates to log, work has been pretty busy so haven't managed to get a great deal done.

Subtle upgrades (lol):

Also replaced the bonnet catch thing as it was pretty tatty and I found one in decent condition at the breakers:

Cleaned out all the crap behind the arch liners with a view to replacing them. Unfortunately the ones I bought from ebay appear to be the wrong size, perhaps for a base model or something. If anyone has a set of front arch liners for sale I would like them!

Did a trial fit of the Brembo brakes, mainly to confirm that they would indeed look awesome when fitted. My plan is to drive the car first for a bit, then fit the 15mm spacers that would be required with them. As long as the handling and feel of the car isn't affected negatively then I will fit them, if not I shall stick with the Willwoods, but I will have to order some road spec pads as I don't think I will really make use of the DS2500 pads properly.

Awesome:

The sidelights that I bought from ebay that were advertised as 'white', are not. So open to recommendations here (apart from removing them).

Unfortunately I still can't drive this as my silver one has not sold yet. Not really sure why as it's a great price for a great car. Perhaps the short mot is the problem, looks like I will be putting it through an mot and paying to advertise it on Pistonheads/Autotrader etc :(

And lastly here are some general whoring pics:

Small update.

Had the car out for a blast down to Peebles from Edinburgh on the A72 which is such an awesome road. On the way back it started to miss-fire occasionally, the following day it was more pronounced and the day after that it was full on not firing at all on one of the cylinders!

Untitled by hansthebear, on Flickr

The other two codes were lambda sensor faults which I assumed was the result of the miss-fire screwing up the exhaust gases. I didn't want to drive the car incase it did any damage so for a change I brought the tools to the car! I had a spare fuel rail with injectors from the donor engine that I got for the Silver 172 which was a stroke of luck.

Quite an easy job replacing an injector, save for spraying fuel all over my face.

Other additions include a new style badge from the group buy:

And some DAB action

Also took a trip up to Knockhill to spectate and took my favourite picture of the car so far! Camera battery had died at this point so its only iphone spec:

This weekend the plan is to fit longer studs and 15mm spacers, and possibly the Brembo Brakes time and weather dependant!

Cheers

Car looks absolutely spot on! Where abouts have you located the dab ariel? Have got one to fit to mine, but the suggested location for it is on the windscreen.

Lovely motor mate and that mirror shine is just rediculous! Can you pm me a link for that stubby aerial you have? Cheers

  Clio 172
Cheers!

i put the dab aerial on the passenger side window, and ran the cable under the door seal and behind the b billar trim, id read on here that the type of windscreen the clios have may hinder the signal!

Thanks!

Engine mods are

K+n panel filter
Port matched inlet manifolds
Scorpion cat back exhaust
98 Ron rstuner map

Another update.

I had bought a Brembo 4 pot set up before I got this car. The current brakes on this (willwoods) have ds2500 pads in them, which are about half worn. The are ok, but only excellent when theres a bit of heat in them, which for the 95% normal road speed driving I do means they are just ok. The Brembo kit came with std pads and I much prefer how they look (awesome).

Here are a few pictures showing what I've been up to

Firstly the car assuming the default position again:

13921061650_4a6096f7d9_c.jpg
Untitled by hansthebear, on Flickr

Because the wheels need spacers to clear the calipers, I needed to install longer studs into the hubs, so i used 2 nuts locked together and a bit of heat to remove the existing ones:

14107684425_ed9d26fec1_c.jpg
Untitled by hansthebear, on Flickr

You can see the difference in length here (to accommodate 15mm spacers, although I think 10mm would be ok):

14108073734_56ee80d238_c.jpg
Untitled by hansthebear, on Flickr

Decided to tart up the hub carriers etc a bit, existing, wirebrushed, degreased the threads (so the new loctite works properly), rust treated, painted with direct to rust hammerite:

New studs prepared with the 2 nuts and some threadlock:

Installed times 8!

14107700285_a47ef339c6_c.jpg
Untitled by hansthebear, on Flickr

Got everything fitted up to make sure it worked, and hit a bit of a calliper clearance based snag. It was rubbing ever so slightly and hindering the rotation of the disc:

13921079860_d659e42b19_c.jpg
Untitled by hansthebear, on Flickr

At this point I gave up for the day and made the help thread in the brakes section. I did however remove the studs from the rear wheels and had a look at the rear brakes which are badly worn and will be replaced next weekend if the weather is good:

So after taking advice around the caliper situation I decided to just file away the uneven parts of the casting causing the problem:

14108093654_58edecc6e5_c.jpg
Untitled by hansthebear, on Flickr

This is a bad picture but is was shaped like a V initially which caused the problem:

14107708445_a48f334857_c.jpg
Untitled by hansthebear, on Flickr

After that the bare alloy got a lick of high temp red paint, I then got the discs painted to prevent rust and the lines and pads etc all fitted:

Untitled by hansthebear, on Flickr

14104616482_51dec37e9c_c.jpg

Then the brakes were bled with ATE superblue, spacers and wheels on, and back on the ground!

13921046617_bd75a38020_c.jpg
Untitled by hansthebear, on Flickr

Next weekend will be, rear brakes including painting the carriers. Not sure about colour but I think red is ok if the front are Brembo!? I also will install the matching rear braided brake lines and thoroughly bleed the whole system again.

Going to a mates in Glasgow tomorrow so the brakes should be pretty well bedded in by then. Looking forward to seeing what they are like!

Cheers
