Re: Road/Track 172

The blue escort was a really nice car with a very useable 450bhp engine. The white cossie was built for about 550 bhp but was closer to 500, before I broke it.

I'd have happily swapped a yellow clio for it ;)

No pics of your old Clio Neil?

It was just a standard 182 but was my daily hack for 2.5 years while the cosworths were weekend toys.

Re: Road/Track 172

Anyway back to the track clio :p

Plans are fit the poly bush kit to the dogbone mount, then lookout for uprated engine mounts and top mounts.
If the buyer does not take LewisTaylors throttle boddies I may well end up with them, giving the bonus of more power and the switch to Omex that can easily be mapped 20 min from me rather than trips down south.

Re: Road/Track 172

Uprated engine mounts now sorted , so what are people recomendations for top mounts ?

Re: Road/Track 172

Nice car, that's exactly how mine should look inside, Im going for anthracite grey and got flocked dash top aswell.

I've heard AST mounts are over complicated and have had issues but I don't have first hand experience. Pure Motorsport mounts and brace can be had for same price and parts are cheap to replace.

You can get the caster from being crafty with the wishbone bushes, camber from adjuster bolts.

Re: Road/Track 172

Ive just bought a second hand set of K-tec topmounts, will see how I get on with them not looking for full adjustability.

Re: Road/Track 172

Thanks but I cant take credit for the build as Ive only done a few changes since I got it, I wouldnt mind finding out who originaly did the work on the car as there is a few parts with no records.
One of my friends has just bought a 106gti on bodies last night so looks like Im going ot have to up the power at some point ;).

I also have my first track night booked for next Thursday .
Will see how the car goes as it is justnow, then get the uprated engine mounts, camber bolts fitted then looks at doing bodies, cams and a belt in the next couple of months once i sort out which ecu im going for looking like either Omex or V4.

Re: Road/Track 172

I have also now bought some Peco 430 cc injectors off the guy selling the bodies so that is another thing sorted, just ARP bolts to sort . What revs are the standard valves safe to ? justnow the car has a 7K limiter but I was thinking 7.5K with the rod bolts done.

Re: Road/Track 172

Not sure on head work 200 bhp would do me and standard head will be fine for that I think.

Re: Road/Track 172

I would pocket the cash, head work gives you barely anything for the money you'll spend. Your Escort looks lush!

Re: Road/Track 172

I like it Neil, someone to have a play with on track days possibly? What made you go for the 197 cams? Nice and cheap i guess.

Whos running the track day next week?

Re: Road/Track 172

The 197 cams were £75 compared to £500 for normal uprated cams, might not get the same gains but im not chasing big bhp.

Its one of the knockhill nights open pit for 2 hours limited to 40 spaces sure it was £60 , Its running reverse so not ideal for a first time out but its the only one while im home from work this time.

Thanks the pacific escort was a really nice car that ended up on the cover of Fastford, but the 996 turbo is the only one I really regret selling. It was close to 600 bhp with Moton 2 way coilovers, amongst a load of other high end mods.

Re: Road/Track 172

You should get some good gains in torque with those, more suited to the ITB's I would think and for the price, stupid not to.

Tempted to take my VXR on if theres spaces, brakes will be ruined tho. All my mates have went off at hair pin and chicane since doing reverse, changes the track a good bit.

Re: Road/Track 172

I just called to check spaces for one of my mates and it's sold out. I will be taking it easy as first ttime on track with the clip and first time driving the track in reverse.

Re: Road/Track 172

Well first track day and it was faultless , I did 3 sessions and my mate took it out for another 2. Hope to get the uprated engine mounts and top mounts sorted for the next time out. Was a good few clips out and it seemed to hold its own against them.

Re: Road/Track 172

Suspension parts to be fitted.

1344611009.jpg

Power parts :)
I need to make a new backing plate or may buy a bigger filter ,this one is fairly tight to the side of the trumpets but does have good clearance at the mouths. Im running Jenveys,20mm jenvey spacers, backing plate then 60mm trumpets giving 120mm from butterfly to the end of the trumpet.

1344611193.jpg

1344611346.jpg

On track last night it destroyed the new back exhaust mount , so today i knocked up a pikey solid rear mount.

Re: Road/Track 172

Good stuff Neil a few more noticeable performance mods going on there. How did you find the brakes in reverse and what setup are you using?

You mentioned about your ITB's being 120mm from the butterfly, talking of Clio's, people usually go on about the trumpet size itself just in case you are looking for a certain length of runner the most popular are 60,90 & 120mm trumpet plus the distance from the mounting face to the butterfly.

120's free up some mid range torque if your looking to do so. Also do you know what type of trumpets you have in pics?? Mine don't touch, yours seem to overlap by a good bit.

Re: Road/Track 172

The brakes were fine they were smoking a fir bit after a 15 min session but had no fade at all. They are brembo disks with ds2500 pads. I'm running 60mm trumpets but had problem with the backing plate hitting te rail so have put 20mm spacers in giving a 80mm trumpet and clearance for the rail.
The trumpets were the ones in the jenvey kit they have a fairly big mouth on them so had to be trimmed so they fit I don't know if this would effect flow as lost done of the radius on the bell mouth.

Re: Road/Track 172

Well had a couple of hours on the clio last few days, engine mounts, suspension mounts fitted along with the poly dogbone mount.
Ive also tried to tidy up the door panel trims as the fit on them is very poor.

1345845712.jpg

Then since the car isnt going to get used due to me being away with work I started trial fitting the ITB's.
Looks like clearance on the rad might be ok with just a slimline fan fitted.

One thing I had not thought of though is where do you take a vac feed from for the brakes? can i just tap into one trumpet or is it better to link into them all ?

Im also still on the hunt for an ECU and loom , would prefer to run Omex as its tried and tested.

Re: Road/Track 172

On my ITB's theres a feed taken from two of the actual bodys underneath not the trumpet, they are cast with a thread in them, easy enough to drill and tap if not and they are t'd together and fit into standard vac line. all quick release connectors with nylon air hose.

I have pics if you want?

Also where did you get your pedal and cable arrangment, I never recieved with my kit.

Re: Road/Track 172

I bought the pedal off of ebay £20 with the original cable.

Could you post a pic of the take offs if you get a chance, I can see the blanks of my manifold but they will need drilled and tapped for push fit fittings.

I also have an Idea for the fuel line that may mean I can retain the original push fitting then cross over to JIC 6 for the rail.

Here you go mate. Only picture I have, im away at the moment so cant get more detailed ones unfortunately. They are just a 90deg 10mm swivel quick release and a 10mm swivel t-piece, pipe that goes out of picture then feeds round and into standard line with no other mods.

P1000400.jpg

This picture shows what lewis was using, you can have this piece for pennys from me if you want it to get you going, I think you will find it hard to get a crossover from plastic to metal without glue or the likes, just sounds shady speaking about it.

You say you bought it from ebay, was it designed for jenvey kit or is it a phase one pedal and cable you have fitted, I thought they needed a mounting bracket for pedal box.

Re: Road/Track 172

Im planning on making a metal fitting on the lathe that is the same as the original fitting on the plastic rail, that will then cross over to a -6 fitting to go onto the new rail.

The pedal came from a phase 1 172 they came with a manual throttle body, so I think the padal just bolts onto the bulkhead in place of the FBW pedal.

That sounds a good solution, you could just use the standard rail as well but not as bling.

Yeah I understand phase 1's came with throttle cable/body, Have you tried to fit what you had on above picture and does it work?

Re: Road/Track 172

Well got the manual pedal fitted today and the cable run, the movement is realy smooth and pedal position is almost exactly the same as the old pedal.

1345917914.jpg

I have also trimmed the front panel, moved the standard rad forward and started to remove the original wiring, im not sure whether to bag and tuck it out the way or cut and cap all the cables then tuck them back into the loom covering.

Plan is to have a rubber mounted plate where the battery originaly sat with both the original and aftermarket ecu mounted on it.
