Fair play... I think I'll give "just the belt" a go... as I'll be doing the job myself. Cam seals seems like a smart plan too. Thanks for the tip!
Is there a step-by step anywhere with the part numbers available?
cheers
/Nick
Have a look for all threads that include the word "Dephaser". The Variable Valve Timing camwheel is referred to as the Dephaser on the f4r engine, and does develop a knock later on in life or if it hasn't been fed the correct diet of expensive oil. The Knock usually can be heard once the engine...
Hi all.
A couple of thousand miles back I had my cambelt changed. It's still relatively new, as is the tensioner and all other pulleys etc that were changed at the same time.... but the Dephaser has started the familiar knocking that we all know and love. :dapprove:
Is it possible to change...
I had a new screen fitted a few weeks ago - the stonechips got a little too annoying in the end.
My previous screen had a chip dead-center at the bottom when i bougth the car. I thought it had been "repaired" with some sort of patch. I labelled it as a crappy repair as the patch was totally...
Cheers James and spinksy: Now all I need to do is find out what the deal is in Sweden.
I've just MOT'd 3 vehicles in a row here though, and used the same guy each time. He's just tweaked his Octavia to give 305 horsies. There's leeway, but it can't be a visible (depending on the age of the car)...
There's a golden rule that stands. Whether you like it or not: Things are cheap for a reason.
I've been deeply unimpressed by anything "cheap" that involves rubber. They look right, but smell wrong, perform badly and die quickly.
100 quid for a Renault backbox seems reasonable. You might...
Is there anyone here who's managed to get a satisfactory job when it comes to recovering the shitty 172 steering wheel? Or does everyone just go for a new one and ditch the airbag/add a resistor?
Also... is removing the airbag technically an MOT failure, or is it the airbag light that causes an...
Can anyone put their finger on what it is about the stock airbox that is so good? Is it simply the heat shielding effect it has and the cool air source?
Also... has anyone bothered relocated the battery to make way for a really short/direct filter run-in and a boxed off cold air area? Would it...
Toyo Proxies - Because they're the only "performance" rubber I've used, and are a shedload better than the b****cks it had on it when I bought it.
...and because I'm honest - I have no experience of the others so my opinion is technically irrelevant :)
Im back here after a long spell away - so trying to do my bit helping out.
You'll find that exhaust work is suddenly WAY easier if you can get the car a little further off the ground and if you KNOW it's secure and not going to fall on you.
Get yourself a pair of axle stands (a tenner...
Hi there.
My 172 has been off the road for the best part of a couple of years now (sprogs and house renovation take priority) and after having recently tried to sell it I've realised that it's not worth as much as I'd hoped. So Im keeping it. It's in perfect condition apart from the Dephaser and...
I *think* I may have found the problem - though as the fault is only intermittent and pops us out of the blue, I'll have to wait until I've put a few km on it to be sure.
I was ab out to start hoiking out the sensor, but decided it was a good idea to double checked the readings I was getting...
Thanks Mr Pink :)
The price I was quoted for a new sensor from the dealership was literally 10% of what I expect to get in a worst-case scenario sale of the car... so really not a viable option. I too tend to steer clear of cheapo bits, but in this case I sadly have little choice. All...
Long time no see :(
My old 172 is in the process of having all it's niggles ironed out prior to selling it... and the ABS light problem is one that I aim to nip in the bud.
The ABS light comes on intermittently, and I suspect it's a break in the wire on the Offside front. Where the wire enters...
Happy April people :D
About 20 mins of effort for me and a good friend at work, and considering all those who had a laugh - totally worth while.
Have a nice weekend! :)
I thought of something new recently, and I'm feeling rather smug at the moment...
I made 2 last night, but will make a couple more this afternoon before I head home, and I'll whack them on the car tomorrow morning when I change from winter wheels to summer rubber :)

^^ That may be because on the 15's I've only ever run serious snow-tires, and they feel so damned sloppy.... Now that I'm breaking my Mk1 16-valver, I have some original Renault Turbine 15's to play with as well as the 15's I have my winter rubber on.... I'll play with both in due course...
I run 15's for my winter rubber and 16's for summer, 195/50's on the 15's and 195/45's on the 16's. Nearly identical Rolling circumferences. No probs.... I prefer the handling of the 16's, but the rubber is significantly more expensive :(
Well, mine's on 130K (km) with AFAIK the original depahser. I've changed the oil at regular intervals and only used oil that felt stupidly expensive (though I get the feeling after reading all this that the intervals were too large)... but DID have the cambelt done not so long ago.
It is...
Cheers Danny :)
Oil has been changed bi-annually without fail... and given that I'll be giving it a fairly comprehensive thrashing and probably fitting different cams, I reckon I'll take the opportunity to replace the de-phaser at the same time.
When the time comes I'll come begging for advice :D
For those who don't know, a b1 license....
(Punctuation/Caps removed out of respect to the thread)
b1 is type rated and involves troubleshooting repair and maintenance of all systems of airframe electrics and powerplant plus limited avionics avionics is restricted to changing line replacable...
I've seen American forums where they used Dry ice sat in the floorpans to freeze the stuff so that it can be chipped out easily.... hard to do on the inside of the roof though ;)
