Considering a clio diesel

Well my life situation has changed of recent and in the next few weeks i have a real nasty commute ahead of me. I will be doing around 112 miles daily. As much as i love the passat i will be filling it back up every 3rd day, and at £70 per tank its not really viable.

I am considering selling it and getting some kind of small diesel, clio, 106 or something.
I am unsure what i would get for the passat but £2k with all the bits still on would be nice...

whats peoples thoughts on the clio's or anything else... suggestions?

Id get the 106 personally, awesome on fuel, quite fun to drive and cheaper than a clio.

Get that, you can even have a little play with the boost and it wont have many problems

106 / Corsa 1.5 straight-diesel

50mpg all day ,every day, no matter how much you abuse it's pathetic engine.

Sure you wont be setting any speed records, but you'll be saving cash

Jay's old 206 diesel did 50-60odd mpg.

His new bus isn't quite so good, despite the lack of boost!

i seriously think the passat will have to go now, unless i can wangle some kind of swaps within the family, i will pitch that to my sister / gf (not the same person...lol)

the favorite at the moment are clio DCi's
they are only £30 on tax

i looked at 306 HDi's but they are another £100 tax ontop of the clio's
any other suggestions?

I'd buy a 306 hdi. So much more comfortable if you're doing 112 miles a day.

i really don't mean this in a sarcastic way but can you elaborate some more please, other reasons why?
to be honest i don't want any of these, i really want to keep the passat (but needs possibly must), and if i need to get something i don't want it needs to be cheap and save me lots.

the reason i would consider the clio more is:
1) i know clio's better
2) clio's are less tax
3) i have roof bars for a clio (poor excuse)

you can have my mrs clio dci for £1650, £30 tax, recent belts, new mot, ive puts loads of new bits on it. its done 127k

DCi is a very very cheap car to run. Imo, only buy a high mileage one if it has been well looked after with FULL service history.

dci all the way get urself over to www.cliodci.net loads of info over there.

65s do mega mpg, as do 80's - 100's are a bit worse but still do 60mpg on a decent run on the mway and the extra power and better gearbox/linkage setup is much better, dont get any of the gearstick movement like you do on others, makes them feel much better to drive.

out of interest whats your budget?

I have a 50k 05 plate dci that had no recordable service history (or manuals for that matter) that i bought in january and since then its been through 2 turbos!

I ran a dci 65 for a year as a way of saving money and it was the best thing I did, such a cheap car to run and really easy to live with ( until my daughter came along!)

I went from a 182 to a dCi 100, it does go well, 84bhp at the hubs 134ftlb torque 60+mpg no matter how I abuse it... even after its Dyno runs!
Sits nicely on the motorway, not alot of engine noise either...
Ive done circa 8k since november, cant complain!
£30 a year to tax...

already guessed the sunroofs are terrible on them, sounds like they used the left overs from the mrk 1's

I have an 80bhp model on nearly 80k. Done about 25ish k in it since I owned it. No problems with it really. Needed belts done but I knew that when I bought it. Only £20 to tax too and epic MPG

Just got a 306 HDI and am very impressed with it so far . Same set up as the GTI-6 but with the 90 BHP & 167 lb/ft engine in it and it will do 50 + MPG

F*ck doing 112 miles a day in a clio/corsa derv.

You want a 306/406 derv imho. 45-50 mpg & great to drive/comfy.

a friend tonight contacted me to see if i was interested in a 106 Derv (non turbo) with 12 months MOT, good condition for under £500

Purely as at the start of, & finish of, a 10 hour day at work, the last u want to do is bounce down tje road in a slow, uncomfortable rattly sh1tbox.

Trust me, ive done 35k a year in a 1*2, buying a barge was the best thing i ever did.

Out of those I would negotiate on price I.e £1950 or so... make sure its had the cambelt, water pump etc

Other than that, I would suggest finding one without a sunroof! lol Only because mine is driving me insane!

yep already noted your comment on the sunroof,
do you know the cambelt times for the diesels? water pump another common problem on these then?

Id go with 5 years/72k as normal...

The normal service schedule is slightly shorter than petrols.
The water pumps can begin to weep after a while, for the sake of £40 or so its easier to replace it at the same time as the cambelt etc.
