182_steve's FF 182 progress thread!

Managed to get over to the local Renault late this afternoon to hopefully have a look at my car - it's ok chatting on the phone about it, but I wanted to see it for myself! Luckily, I caught the workshop guys just as they were packing up for the day and had finished the other car jobs so two of the senior technicians were very happy and willing to take me into the workshop and have a good chat about the car.

This is currently how it looks 😧

The gearbox is out and they have started to have a look at it, but the cause of the issue still isn't clear. Looks to be more internal than say one of he cogs on the outside of the box if that makes sense!

Here is the issue however, this is what is coming out from inside - metal filings and two of what looks like teeth from somewhere!?

So needless to say, it's in a few parts at the moment laid out on the workshop floor 🙈

Have been back again today and told them to put a new clutch in when it goes back together, seems foolish to put the old one back in as i'm unsure how old it is - i've certainly not replaced it myself, plus you wouldn't do an oil change and put the old oil filter back on. So yeah, the credit card is getting a bashing this month!!!

@Chris_Beer @Louis photos of the damage above

How odd, Obviously something is definitely wrong there with the metal bits floating but strange how you've had no symptoms. But at least you found out this way.

Are you getting a clutch release bearing fitted too? Makes sense while its all out and doing a clutch change.

It's so strange, you'd think with some teeth out, it would have been a complete biatch to get into gear!! Regards the clutch release bearing, didn't even think of that to be honest, worth doing do you think?

Yes. It will come in the clutch kit.

As above with the bearing. Put a new Valeo / OE clutch in mine 5 years ago and its still nice and strong to this day. Will be lovely with a new box in it as well but shame you didn't completely kill yours to see the benefit lol.

Your gearbox looks very clean on the outside though !

Just ordered a clutch kit from RPD myself, to go direct to the garage - they phoned me this morning to say if I wait for them to get one in, Renault don't have one available until Friday/Monday next week so could I organise one and get it sent direct to them!? At first I was like wtf 😊 BUT..... actually, that's proved a good result, as I phoned RPD and they had one left on the shelf and have it on 'sale' at the moment, selling as a complete kit (including clutch release bearing) for £177.18 + postage (£5.00). You just know Renault would have charged me full price so doing it myself has probably saved a good few quid there and still a genuine part!

Don't ya just love it when your waiting on an all done call from the garage and they ring right at the last minute and hit you with bad news! At least you've managed to get all the required bits sorted quickly, fingers crossed it all works perfectly when rebuilt.
Just remember to double check that rear spring, and when are the recaros being fitted? [emoji6]

Tell me about it!! I've made sure it's been written down on the job card about swopping the spring round AND also told them again when I was there to see the car in pieces lol! As for Recaro's unless you can get them buy one get one free @ 50 quid I think my wallet needs a break 😂
Joking aside, I honestly think the standard seats are what should stay in the car from what I've read about the Trendline Recaro's not being as supportive etc as some of the old style Recaros ive had in old cars.

I did'nt think the recaro's were too bad in my old Meg. The other problem with them is they dont match the rear seats, how people live with purple Mitsubishi recaros god only knows!

I've said this before, may even have been in this thread actually, but Recaros look ace but the standard seats have much better bolsters and hold you in so much better.

Agreed! I reckon I could *maybe* live with the Trophy trendines but yes, the other versions out there like the Mitsubishi ones, the pattern and colour differences would seriously bug me. That said, if you have a stripped and carpeted rear, wouldn't be so bad.

This  I'm sure they are awesome seats in their own right, but compared to my RS Turbo Recaros of old and even the ones in my old Astra VXR, you look to sit on them more than in them.

Well that looks like it's either teeth off a gear, or it's a tooth off a synchro hub. Can't really see it well enough to say for sure.

If that box has had that amount of metal going through it, expect damage to each individual gear and bearings.

Personally I'd be replacing all the bearings in that box as the ground up gears makes a paste which ruins everything if it's been going on a while. Brace yourself for a big bill @182_steve or just get a service exchange box from renault fired in. They're around £1k ish.

He has bought a s/hand box from Renparts mate.

I wouldn't be fussed tbh..

I'd be pissed off if I spent £1k on a rebuilt standard gearbox, I would never want to drive it hard. Think how many replacement boxes you could get for £1k. I'm sure he won't be blowing a gearbox anytime soon unless he likes full throttle launches on his daily commute lol.

Haha daily commute and hard launches are two things never to be associated with @182_steve and his clio :tongueclosed:

This is something I considered and discussed with them, but believe it or not Renault don't do them anymore i'm told! I was surprised to hear that, but they did ask the question for me and either way our local Renault couldn't supply a new one - hence the mad rush to find 'something' to get the car back together and off their workshop ramp!

That may well be as fucked as his original! Lol

I was thinking the same but didn't want to say.

Agreed! It's something that has certainly gone through my mind but just had to crack on - if the car was in my garage and I had some time to sort it, i'd maybe find an alternative solution but the issue being the fault was only found when it was up on the garage workshop's ramp and there it has stayed since, so need to get it back together and out of their way asap

So today has been another round of phone calls chasing this gearbox, not easy to do when i'm busy at work but luckily found some time when needed - we just happened to drive past the local Renault where my car is around 8:30 this morning and there was a big truck parked outside, the type that would deliver pallets - great I thought, that's my gearbox, what's the chances of timing that! Anyway, no time to stop, carried on with work!

So it was to my complete surprise that I got a phone call from them around 1:30pm advising me that the gearbox still hadn't arrived, despite the fact it should have been there Monday!! Yep, the truck I saw first thing was just a co-incidence and had just parked there. As a side issue, the clutch had arrived from RPD this morning however, the standard fast excellent turnaround I've had many times before from them

So got on the phone to Renparts about an hour later when I finally got 5 mins spare and have not come so close to loosing my s**t on the phone for a very long time (it's not my way to kick off and shout) - so I explained that the gearbox still hadn't arrived and could they chase it for me and when he came back, I quietly let him tell me how there had been a delay getting the car over to them and how the gearbox had only just been taken off the car and would be 'definatly' be sent today - at that point, I started saying MY bit!! That I ordered it Thursday night for dispatch Friday, that I paid extra for it to be delivered Monday, that my car is taking up a ramp in a busy main dealer workshop, that the garage keeps phoning me every two hours asking where it is (lied there to make a point!) and that at no stage had anyone contacted me to tell me of any delay.......... by the time I stopped he was umm errr aaaahh'ing and apologised a couple of times and said he'd talk to his manager to get my next day delivery charge refunded. A tenner!! I'd rather they kept it and got my f'ing box delivered tomorrow.

So that is the current on going saga updated on here. Have not been a happy chap about all this today! RANT OVER!

What's happening with the original box mate? If it's going nowhere, keep hold of it and I'll open it up for you if the renparts box is shite.

Good man thanks for that mate, i'll keep it in mind - nothings happening with the old one, with the potential damage inside it was a non starter fixing or repairing it short term. Wouldn't have the confidence to use it again unless fully sorted like you said

I wouldnt hold out much hope mate, renparts sent me 2 broken driveshafts ( one someone has smashed the splines on the spkndle where the hubnut goes with a hammer and a leaking boot the other had 2 split cv boots ) and the third one they sent me was way too big and not the same model.

5 weeks in total my clio was off the road due to them saying there sending it out tomorrow then a week later nothing arrived like that for 5 weeks, they never phoned me back i always had to chase them. worst company ive dealt with in a long time.

i sent the broken shafts back 2 weeks ago and still had to phone them to ask them where my refund was.

abit off topic but i feel your. pain with them

Send your old box to Mark, it will be fully sorted. [emoji16]

Cannot believe i'm writing this, but the gearbox STILL hasn't been received at the garage from Renparts - absolutely terrible service and I am literally counting down until I can get on the phone again to them tomorrow, won't be so calm this time - no communication, no emails and worst of all, I was all but promised it would be at the garage Wednesday or Thursday (today) at the latest, which was already 3 days late. Fuming!!

I’d cancel the payment and source another from somewhere else or ask for a part refund.

Will see what they say tomorrow about a part refund for sure, I just need it delivered so they can put the car back together, that's all that matters at the mo! Car has now been sat on a ramp doing nothing for a week

Which is a shame as they seemed okay on here. Unless they got too big or something.

Kat/josh allways seemed sound. But hey ho

Just seems recently a few people have had exactly this problem with big parts. Late delivery and zero communication and some dead parts delivered. New management maybe?
