Young 172/182 owners question

You will find that most Insurance Companys will not accept you as a named driver on your dad's policy for a Renault Sport. Well not until you are at least 25. Even some of the specialists like Adrian Flux will not cover you. So that is a route you will not be allowed to go down as so many others used to do this illegally the Insurance Companies are closing this loophole. So your only choice will be to Insure it in your own name and pay through the nose for the privilege. As others have suggested drive something smaller to establish your No Claims and keep yourself out of any trouble with speeding not to mention drawing unnecessary Police attention to yourself in a hot hatch.

I know all this as my son has been involved in the modded car scene for some time and I tried to put him on my Insurance. He had a Megane 2.0 coupe at the time yet they still refused to put him on my insurance as a named driver until he is 25. We were both using the same Insurance Company as well at the time.

He sold the Megane as he was getting fed up of being stopped every week for driving a non standard performance car.

most online insurers dont have an option for pass plus but if you mention it yo them on the phone they usualy take it into account and the dicout is rouhgly liek 1 years ncb, inthe first year then after it your real ncb cancells it out if you knwo what i menas, so basiclaly you pay 120 to get about 6-700 off your insurance for the first year.
my bro only got it the discount by accident.
he bought the car and the cheapest insurance he could get was 1974.20 form tesco witha £500 excess. but the insurance doc never came through intime for him to pick upt he car, so the dealers gave him a weeks free fully comp cover, with NU. my bro called up to arrnage the temp cover and they asked if theyhad quoted him ye said yep 2,600 a couple days previous on line, so the wee dood typed away, and my bro mentioned hehad pass pluss and he said they only included that on phone sale and not online, but they managed to quote him £1406 almost half what they quoted him a few days previusly. so he took them up ther and then, and cancelled tesco, but they hadnt even sent out the doc yet so no charge. yass. he probs could have taking a ref and phones tesco and bartered them down, but he count be bothered he just wanted his car lol.

did some on one here not insures a 1*2 when they were 17 in their own name, but i think if i rmember the excess was about the same as the policy.

i done the maned driver thing but i got ran into and things got messy, the idiots we boughthe car from (Mount vernon Car sales) registered the car to me not my dad because i picked it for him because he was at work, i was buying it but it was insured to my dad so he needed to "own" it. i told the guy when he fille dout that yellow slip but he still wrote ross not william. we never noticed until the insurers asked for the v5, and we noticed the wrong name. didnt think to check it when we got it. to be honest the fright it gave me that possibly the insurance was void scared me silly, i mean you getin serious trouble not only finacially because the taxi even though she hit me could sue me for loss of earning etc if it have no insurance, and i'd be liable for all damage, and also have a drivng conviction and 5 points, or probably a ban and resit as it was my frst year. so as soon as i could i got my own policy, i got the clio as it as cheaper to insure that in my name than it was to drive the laguna under my dad! went form 700 to 1900, aftert that, because the claim isnt settled. now i'm paying 1300 on my clio only 100 less than my wee bro.

No shortcuts

Do the time is s**ters like most people do, build up your own NCB then get one when the insurance is a sensible price.

I've had high insurance group cars since I was 18, and I've paid high prices and just put up with it. After 7 years of driving, my renewal for my 172 (although will be 182 by the time I renew) is £411. If 'd have gone on my parents insurance, it'd probably still be near £1k I expect.

On my first car, I was a named driver on my mum's policy, but the car was in her name, and I only drove it at the weekends as I walked to work and didn't go out in the week, and she used it to go to work in the week, so we basically shared the car, opposed to just insuring it in her name to get it cheaper. After that, I bought another car, and she kept the original one. Only reason for sharing was I wanted a Saxo VTS and wasn't allowed one, so had a 1.1 lol. Then when I'd been driving for a while, she let me buy one, but I got a Fiesta Zetec-S instead.

I got to the point where it was more expensive to insure under my folks names...Think 20 was the turnin point!

When i got the vee i binned the willy off that policy and my old man took it on Via "SAGA!" lol and it was 189£ With me as a named! Bargain! And we were both using it equally...For a month then it was sold.

dunno if this helps... but with direct line and im 22... i pay £480 for my policy

How??? I'm 22 and I pay 620 fully comp with Direct Line, and I have 6yrs no claims! How is this travesty possible?? Have you insured it TPFT not fully comp?

perhaps it was something to do with the area i live in and the area u live in? remember they work on bands depending on what your postcode is, and if they consider it a safe area? i live in hampshire so think im in an OK area... wots it like where u live? also mine is for social use only as i dont use my car to commute to work or anything.

also, how u manage to get 6 years no claims? as u've only been driving 5 years if ur 22 ??? ive got 5 years no claims (i have been on my own policy since i was 17) and i am insured fully comp.

You realise Peejay is the one with the 182, and he was trying to get his son insured... And you have to be 25 to do the 3rd party on other cars thing. :rolleyes:n00b:star:

your forgetting that everybody on cliosport doesnt speed, bend rules and earns 60k a year. ( Thats why we all drive ferrari's and have many homes scattered around the world)

if you bite the bullet and do it properly you will be paying a fortune fact. id wait untill eiether you have 1 years ncb, a licence for a year and hopefully no points and then do it.

i think you said that you had a licence for 6 months so saving a grand or so for waiting six months is well worth it and 182 are only getting cheaper so you will be paying less for the car and less for insurance.

as for going in your parents name i did it for 2 years and it doesnt save you any money in the long run mate its worth doing it in your own name, but put your parents on YOURS as named drivers it saves me £500 a year.

im 24 now with licence for 3 years got bmw 330ci and pay £1500 a year but if i had gone in my name on the 182 it would be paying well under a grand.

All depends where you live!!! Insurance was about 150 a month max, And if you're clearing over 1500-2k a month, it's hardly a heffty price to pay..

Cupwhite - Wasn't aim'd at you...Just generalisin!

I'm still learning things in my 1.2 and i've been driving almost 2 years now (just turned 19) wouldn't buy a 172 yet even if i could afford it. Done loads of quotes for 1*2's before and your going to be looking at 3-4k easily even on your dads' i expect? Best of luck when you do get it though.

Fair play i would of loved to of had a car like that when i was 17.

I think a 17 year old owning a clio sport is a real bad idea, im 24 and I think im too young!

If you are stupid and sick enough to pay out all that cash then why not. personally, im on a budget, i could buy a cliosport, tax and insure it etc etc, but id be well and truly shafted if i wanted to go round town.

Personally id rarther be speding my time getting pissed with my mates, and having sex with girls.

But if you really want to then do it lolo. i was adament on getting one last year but i went for another 1.2 16v because its affordable.
