Young 172/182 owners question

yep theres a big load of them they all sit in a lay-by sometimes untill 3-4am with their VTR's and Zetec-S fiestas couple of MG ZR's and the funny part is they ALL have they cheap ebay headlight bulbs, sorry xenons! as soon as a fast car goes past they all race out the lay-by after it!

Sounds like the people that hand round the back of tesco on a saturday night near where i live, with 14 year old girlfirnds! lol

I would go for it, but for christs sake get your own insurance.

If you cant afford to properly insure it, then you shoudent have it.

i get my 172 cup next year, a year no claims, 19. gonna cost me £1970.

BUT When i drive it, it will be my car. not daddys

hmm. . .satisfaction of it belonging to you i guess. . .1.2 1st car etc is understandable due to cost, but getting a 172 is silly imo

Insure a Metro fully comp with Flexi bell Drive other car policy, Insure the 182 as daddies, Drive It with his permission 3rd party.

Not that I do this, But thats how all my friends Have S3's and M3's VXR's at 20. They get pulled all the time and have crashed and got payouts.

The usual forum people scaremongering.

That said, I'm all legit, Can afford to insure fast cars, But can bear to part with £250 a month to insure a car that if I wait a few years will cost almost that a year.

Swwallow your pride, Drive a s**t car that costs pence to run, Build up your no claims, Spend your young life shagging everything that walks and drinking, Go on the piss and have the latest computer games/Clothes/Ipod whilst living at home. You are only young once, Dont miss out on it cause you can't go out cause you have to insure/run your car.

I've been there done that, When I was 17, Yes I did have the best car out of all my mates (In my/their opinion, Was onlya 1.2 Clio, But with legitimate Modified insurance, Cost me as much as a 182 to insure), Yes I got it into magazines, Yes I loved driving it, But Whilst all my mates were out having fun, I was at home knocking one out, Cause All my money was tied up in cars.

I've just come into some money, Could "afford" to go buy a Nice 197, An S3, An Audi TT, Impreza, Evo or something, But dont want to go back to having no money outside of my car. Some I'm buying a Clio Dynamique, Aand saving the rest.

I'm a true Petrol head, But when you are young, Have fun. Theres plenty of time later in life to have a nice fast car, That you will be able to handle, Insure for peanuts, and wont be getting pulled every 5 minutes by the Old Bill, Believe me that gets tiresome.

Try Bell Insurance fella, they were the onlly company who would insure me for a decent price at 19..

Its not legal lol

You can be on your parents policy as a named driver perfectly legally, and still earn no claims with some companies. For example with the NFU - he could be on his dad's policy as the main user, slightly cheaper on the basis his dad might use it sometimes - but he's still the main user, on a policy, in his dad's name. But please, don't let the facts get in the way of a good rant :) I worked in insurance for 5 years.

AFAIK ins. companies don't let you have 'driving other cars' cover unless you're over 25 now? But I don't know on that so I'll leave it open to the floor.

i had been driving for about 6 months when i got mine, i understood the basic do's and dont's when driving quickly, you dont lift off in a bend u dont brake in a bend you dont drive quick in the wet etc and by sticking to they rules i was able to drive quick enough to have plenty fun without doing anything too dangerous (in my eyes anyway)

Meh, you say that but unless you'd had a lot of experience in what happens at the limit it is a bit pointless.

Experience does count, but it's what kind of experience. If you've got 10 years of experience at driving normally, you'll be ready for the people that just pull out of junctions etc.

If you've had 10 years experience of crashes and close overtakes, you'll know where to draw the line better than someone who's had 1 year experience of driving relatively fast.

You can be a named driver yes but not the main driver. If you are driving as the main driver on your dad's insurance that's not legal.

Now adding your Dad to your own policy (Which is what I would do) is legal.

Also the problem of building up a no claims as a named driver is that is most cases when you come to want to move insurance company they wont let you transfer them. Which means your stuck with the same company as no one else will recoginise your no claims.

The above happened to my friend with 2 years no claims as a named driver on a direct line policy. When they wouldn't insure him on the car he wanted they wouldn't let him have the no claims bonus so he could move to another one.

He is now stuck. Just because you worked for an insurance company doesn't mean you know everything. I've done enough research myself to know the basics mate.

They would have to prove that the named driver drove the car more than the policy hodler though.

All my mates give their dad/mom the cash and then fill the tank up using their moms/dads credit card, Pay for all MOTS/Repairs using their mom and dads cards and keep a reciept.

CupWhite - Obviously, you haven't done enough research. His dad can have a policy and have him as the main user. I did these things every day for years. Not all companies offer this, but some certainly do - such as the example I gave of the NFU. Been that I worked in the field doesn't meant I know everything, but probably more than a keyboard warrior who just has an axe to grind against the OP for whatever reason.

I'm not disputing that, it still aint legal and the fact that its so easy to get away with doesn't make it right.

I am and always have been fully ligit and if some 17 year old crashes into me in there so called daddies car i'd be pissed off. The whole system needs looking at imo.

Keyboard warrior?? I have the same views in everyday life moron so get off the high horse.

I have never heard of a policy like that and I have done 100's of insurance quotes over the years so If such a policy exists then I am mistake.

If the "OP" wishes to pay 3k for the pleasure then good luck to him LOL.

There are plenty of Named driver policys where you can build NCB now.

Insurers are trying to stop named drivers, But then offer NCB as an incentive.

The ONLY plus for going on my own was NCB, Now I can get that as a Named driver?

The whole system needs looking at imo.

I'd agree with that 100%. Most of the claims I seemed to deal with were old people who had just 'not seen it' and driven into something...

Yes, that's the other end of the spectrum obviously but still leads to the same conclusions. How many of us have nearly been smashed up by some old guy who can just about lift his arm never mind drive 5 miles down the road.

Im 19, 0 NCB. Although I have been driving for 2 years under my mums name. £1572.25, to insure myself for my 182 trophy. At the end of the day mate, we have all been there at 17 and got the insurance. It's a nightmare getting insurance at 17. I got a quote for a 1.2 punto. they wanted 2.5 for that in my own name with directline. Once you hit 20 / 21 im led to believe it does come down!

  Street Triple R
I had my Evo when I was 19, whilst I just about afforded it, I would never do it again, as it is such a lot of money to waste on insurance. At the time it was all I wanted but when you get a bit older you realise what a waste it is.

I have always had fairly fast cars for how old i am but i have worked my way up from a 1.3 polo to 1.6 megane coupe to a escort rs turbo to a gti-6 now to my 182 i have have been lucky, i have had some very close misses in most of the cars mostly due to not being very experienced, imho i could not have handeled a car like the 182 when i was 17 or 18 i am now 20 and i dont believe anyone whos that age that says they can unless they are lewis hamiton. I have always paid through the teeth for my insurance and built up my own no claims, i think if you have your own insurance then it also tends to make you think as its your no claims etc. your going to mess up not daddys protected ones and that you cant get insured on that car for a reason, although saying all this when i first passed i was similar always wanting to go faster, although i did find admiral have been quite good for me the whole way thorough there prices weren't too bad and im getting a years no cliams after 10months although not all places will accept this if i decide to change.

  Mk1 Eunos Roadster
My 182 insurance costs me £617 fully comp. I'm 22 with 3yrs driving experience and 6yrs no claims (direct line swapped my motorbike no-claims over to my car policy as I don't ride my bike any more). Without the NCB it was close to £1300 fully comp. Dread to think what they would have asked at 17.

I was invincible to when I was 17. Not to mention very naive! The best thing was I was very cocky and always right. I remember saying and doing some really stupid things. I shudder now at the thought of how much of a c**k I must have been.

£3k on insurance? You must be mad or (cough) young, naive and cocky regardless of if you can afford it. I look forward to the 'I cant afford a house' in a couple of years thread in general chat....

1.2 8v clio at 17 ftw!

Good luck fella.

think thats the main give away tbh its that high to deter young drivers from having fast cars!!

imo he is naive for trying to find a away around it, despite all problems he will encounter but oh well 'you cant reason with a fool'

1.2 upto 21 ftw!

Not worth it, speaking from experience.

I got mine feb last year when I was 19, and the insurance was somethin stupid like 1800 with max excess. Renewed last month, 1350. 1*2s are good little cars, but its not worth it when you couple the insurance bills with maintenance and running costs. Looking back I wish I'd got a golf tdi or similar!! Agh well. you live and learn I suppose!
