Think he explained his motivation before. No maintenance and not as aggressive considering they are running near stock engine. For now [emoji6]

What made you go for the Quaife over a gripper diff?

Tom
I'm 100% sure this is the most asked question on here! ?.. everyone will have their own opinion

As @pule333 eluded too my reasoning for going for a Quaife is:

Base unit cost, cheaper to run, minimal servicing, not running silly power so don’t need any aggressive locking, smoother operation, great customer service

You’ll love it! So much grip out of corners it’s unreal.
Yeah we're looking forward to it.. should help a lot!.

Once we get our Roll Centre kit made and fitted too it should be a big step up in performance, closer to where we want it to be. From testing our laptimes are pretty close at the min compared to the championship front runners, so these mods will hopefully put us right in the mix at the front.

Same reason I went for Quaife. If the box was easy to pull out like a saxo vts id have gone gripper.

Exactly.. gearbox removal isn’t the easiest on these cars, and only half the job!.. then your into splitting the box, to get to the diff, before you can even change the settings/service it.

Defo not denying a plated diff offers better performance / adjustability tho.

Why haven't you gone for quaifes smaller final drive? You doing the meg 5th gear?

Quaife don’t offer any different final drives as far as I’m aware.. Gripper offer the 3 different versions though.. I’m happy with the gearing we have to be honest, from all the tracks we’ve tested at it works really well.. tbh it’s questionable how much u can actually gain from the small increase in accel compared with the time lost doing an additional shift at the end of a straight. (Their rally spec one is obviously beneficial if your grave rallying)

Quafie don’t offer a final drive but I know several companies that sell a final drive to fit the quafie. Found a few after a long time of googling parts in France and Italy before I bought my diff.

Are you still looking at uprating the front brakes? Ive only just learnt about them recently but have you thought about residual pressure valves. I always have pad knockback in my brembos and wondered how much the valves would help

Hi mate, I don’t think we’ll be upgrading to 4 pots now, I’m pretty happy with the performance of the std calipers really, (were more than capable of locking the wheels, and with adequate cooling don’t suffer any brake fade) .. I know of residual pressure valves, normally used on drum brakes I thought.. if your struggling with knockback you might want to look into ‘caliper piston springs’ or ‘anti knockback springs’ easier to fit and there are a lot of options on stiffnesses.. we used them on the GT cars.. they fit underneath the piston in the caliper and effectively apply a small amount of pressure to back of pistons when off brakes so essentially do the same thing that the valves do, but a lot simpler.

Had a couple of really good test days at Croft and Snetterton over the last few weeks

Both days we had glorious weather, if not a tad too hot!, track temps in the 40s!

We haven’t done many upgrades yet, just been working on setup at each circuit and just learning the tracks and building our confidence in the car

Few shots from Croft:

I thought it was some camera vibrations or something giving a rolling shutter effect at first haha
I know what you mean!.. but nope, just my poor bolt checking prior to the track day haha.... I'd had the box off before croft changing the clutch release bearing so disconnected the gearbox linkage. I'm thinking i nipped it up resetting its position but never fully tightened it. Never again though

Snetterton is a great track. The very first track I ever drove on, albeit about 20 years ago! And in it's old configuration back then. And I did my ARDS test there back in 2014 too. Definitely another track that rewards the brave. Especially around Coram where loads of time can be gained if you can get the car handling nicely.
Some great photos there too.

@robzracing .. Thanks, it’s changed a lot in the times I’ve been there over the years, bet it’s a drastic change since you first drove there!..
Yeah Coram was the most tricky but rewarding corner, the car was handling really well tbh.. a small amount of oversteer, but mainly nice and composed, 4 wheel sliding on the limit.

Can’t wait to get out next year now and start racing..

Still got a couple of tests to go though.

What is realy interesting for me, what is with the pre load of the bearings. JC5 for Clio sport is preloaded. Which Bearings have which preload and how could i Adjust it, with witch measuring device?

Hi William, as you say the JC5 box has pre loaded bearings. depending on which type of box it is depends on which bearings need pre loading. JC5-129/130 boxes have tapered bearings for both the main shaft and differential. The input shaft has roller bearings which require no preload adjustment. the older JC5-089 boxes have all three shafts on taper bearings.

The preload is set with different thickness shim washers on each of the shafts. (there is a kit that can be purchased from Renault of 7 ish washers of different thicknesses)

Renault stipulate a specific preload which is calculated by replacing the shims washers in the box with a thinner setting washer and measuring the float in the shafts axially. (dial gauge normally) Then this float value is added to a preload value (given by renault in the build manual, different for each shaft). this total value is then the correct shim washer thickness required.

Sorted myself some press tools to aid in fitting all the bearings into the box casing. Jobs are so much easier when you have the right tools

Started off fitting the diff and main shaft bearing outers.. gave the housing a warm up first to help get them in easier.

I managed to get the gearbox fully rebuilt last weekend before heading to Blyton last Monday for a private trackday with some friends (10 cars with the track to ourselves, so a lot of track time!)

Here are a few more shots of the gearbox rebuild.

Main shaft cleaned up and checked prior to building back up with all the cleaned gears and new synchros

Next up was setting the diff bearing preload, using different thickness shims.. this time using a spring balance to measure the torque to turn the crownwheel. I set it at 25N

I made a locking plate to prevent the diff turning while torquing up the lock nut, using a special 50mm socket

Next up I cleaned and prepped the input shaft and new shorter megane 5th gear and new synchros.

I then turned my attention to the selector mechanism and selector forks. I sent the arm off for powder coating, which came back great.

I also fitted new shaft bearings, lip seal and pivot Bushes to reduce the play and stop the box leaking (prime location for leaks on the box)

A full year on since the Clios first shakedown at Blyton, we were back again and this time equipped with a few new parts and a lot more experience!.. the rebuilt box and the new Quaife LSD performed faultlessly!, a huge step up in performance.. a full 4 seconds quicker around the outer circuit.. managed a 1:12.7 lap in the end!.. here it is..
