Remapped clio 182?

  Williams 2
Recently bought a clio 182, think it has been mapped (bought it from a dealer he didnt know)

Reason I think it has is because when warm it revs over 7,200 which is the limit for a standard one? Mine goes to about 7,600rpm.

Sometimes it does only rev to 7,000 though is that because its not up to temperature? Does a remap still keep the 'not warmed up' rev limit?

Any other ways to tell its been mapped?

Does it feel hesitant on start up when you first drive it when cold??

Not that I would notice mate i've not long had the car so don't know what they should drive like, I drive it really slow from cold so not sure i'd notice!

Im not sure exactly but it idles quite high i'd say, maybe 1,000rpm

Well mine's remapped with an RSTuner box from Fastchip,
on start up it idles at 1100rpm for a bit, then when it's up to temp it sits at 900rpm on idle,
standard engine maps idle at 800 or 850rpm I think.

Keep an eye on yours from cold and when it's up to temp,
if it's the same as mine then it's more than likely running a Fastchip map.

Not sure if other non Fastchip maps have the same idle characteristics though.

Ok thanks guys, I started it up a few minutes ago from cold and it idled a little over 1,000rpm.

I haven't looked yet what idle is when warm.

Thanks for the info, so its safe to say my car has a remap of some sort though?

I'd say it's more then likely using a Fastchip map if it idles at 1100rpm from cold,
they really help the engine run smoother on startup and get rid of alot of the lumpiness the engines usually have with OEM maps,
not to mention smoothing out the power and torque curve so it has a bit more grunt lower down.

Normally F4Rs have sod all power until 5k rpm.

As already said, if it is running a standard OEM map then when you start it up in the mornings and drive it up the road it will feel really lumpy and hesitant, you'll be able to feel the difference as soon as its warm. If it were decatted it would pop loads on cold start on the standard map. This is why I want mine remapped.

Well mine seems smooth in the morning, pretty much the same as when warm.

So does the rev limit when cold still apply with a remap? Because mine sometimes revs to 7,600-7,800 sometimes, but sometimes limiter cuts in at 7,000 when only been driving for 5 minutes?

Yep it'll have a cold map that will limit the revs until warm,
also even when warm it'll have a 6800 limit in 1st & maybe 2nd,
then 3rd 4th & 5th will be 7600 or 7800 I can't remember tbh.

Also your engine wont last long if you're booting it when it's stone cold. :nono:

I don't boot it from cold, it was just for 'testing' haha...!

Thanks for the info

Thank you! Now I know why there are 3 rev limiters in this ECU!

The lower one is temperature dependant, and other two (2nd could be first gear as somebody suggests). 3rd rev limit could be for all other gears.

I will do some research tomorrow. Or now! Cheers :)

The 1st limit in the map is cold start(Any temperature below 75*c). 2nd one is soft limit, and the last is the hard limit (the limit in all the gears) 7200RPM is standard, any higher and it's been mapped!

Standard file, iirc is 6800 cold, 7100 soft, 7200 hard. I could check it, but cba :D

Best way to tell is as already suggested. Leave the car til the engine is stone cold (12hrs works wonders). Start it and drive off straight away. If it is hesistant, feels 'bogged down' and if you take it over 4K then let the revs drop & the exhaust 'pops' on the over-run then it isn't mapped.

Also a map apparently smoothes out the kick you get at 5,000RPM.

With regards to the rev limiter, it will limit it to 6,500RPM until the oil temp is upto normal operating temperature. Just because your coolant temp dial says the engine is at the right temperature, doesn't mean it is. I've nearly eaten my dash two or three times when the limiters kicked in at 6,500RPM when I expected 7,200RPM.

yeah if you get sod all until 5k and feel a massive kick then its not been mapped

if it pulls all through from lower down and revs more then chances are its mapped :)

Been reading this, my 182 is odd when it's cold, i assumed ot was normal as the only other cat i sport i can compare it too is the wife's 197.

When cold (like today) it ticks over at approx 1400rpm for a few seconds then sits at 1200 for a couple of minutes then 1000 until the cars warmed up. it then ticks over at 850.

Any ideas if this has been mapped?

How come I don't have these problems?

No its not a miss fire only does it if i jump straight in to it when cold and drive off soon as its warm its fine and no its not got the pop and bang mapp

My 182 is hesistant when cold. Every morning ive got to sit for a minute or so until the revs sit below 1K otherwise or it will feel hesistant if i pull straight away. I also have a misfire code appear occasionally when im idling either in traffic or on a cold start. When warm, it runs fine.

Mine is remapped with a receipt to prove it and until now (touchwood!) it was always a little funny when cold ; it used to hesitate at light throttle at 2.8k. Since I have put in a new genuine thermostat that issue has completely gone away away it seems. I have tried at times to see if it will do it but a week on all is well. It is also far smoother in throttle response once warm than it ever has been.

@Fred@BTM you git! You were right about my 172 FF wannabe. Considering the temperature gauge went from slightly (and I mean slightly) below halfway to slightly above it drives alot nicer with the new thermostat. It seems the last owner had an issue with the car too with the running ; he changed the CTS. I am surprised that the gauge simply being slightly above halfway at all times could make the car run that bit better. Cheers as always :).

Chas from Warwick.
