Phase 1 Flamer Restoration Project

Hello All

Thought i would start project thread for my phase 1 flamer

Bought it for a decent price and it was delivered last night at 9PM via a shipping company.

Wasnt sure what to do with the car and thought about a track/fast road project but after some research and some advice from people in the know ive decided to go down the restoration route, car has come with a huge bistory file including every mot, tax disc, receipt, service history/books etc.

ive got a lot of pics to follow for people to have a look at.
:

Didnt really get a good look round it as it was dark, so been out with the camera this morning and taken pics of all over the car.

Enjoy

Looked through all the pics with great interest. Quite a big project you have taken on! It would be fantastic to see this Flamer restored to former glory. Looking forward to project updates - Good Luck!

Update 07/03/16

Had a good tidy in the workshop today and made room for the clio, cant believe how different the colour looks under these lights.

Also found a decent genuine renault parts supplier online which should progress the resto :thumb:

The car appears to have quite a decent oil leak by the looks of it which is a bit annoying but i might even have the engine out to clean/refurb the bay.

Update 08/03/2016

Had a day in the workshop tidying and sorting some stuff out.

Whipped a wheel off the rear and had a look around the bakes/suspension etc to see what lies ahead. To be honest I am quite pleased at the condition of everything, especially being 15 years old! :thumb:

P3084095_zpsxj8pvoel.jpg

P3084096_zpsb0dn9yhf.jpg

The calipers and discs appear to be in good condition as well as the brake lines, these will be coming off and just getting a rub down and satin black paint. (unless seals and rubbers are perished then they will get a rebuild)

P3084109_zps7i3be8iv.jpg

P3084097_zpsgv47egzv.jpg

The exhaust is looking like its going to need sorting out for definite, i reckon someones had a diy bodge fix a few times looking at the cable ties and knackered mounts

P3084102_zpskiffqaq5.jpg

P3084108_zpswamoyjhk.jpg

Also the heatshields are fairly tatty

P3084106_zpsbouicj1f.jpg

P3084104_zpszjiarbif.jpg

The rear beam is rusty and i think i will pull it out when the time comes and get it blasted and coated

P3084098_zpsgrcomprw.jpg

While i had the camera i thought id take a picture of my new cabinets :thumb:

P3084111_zpsh3zehtgw.jpg

This is one of the parts that made me buy the car, its full history and all receipts etc

It has every MOT certificate as well as every tax disc its had :thumb:

P3084119_zpsk6xpasnt.jpg

This is a good part of the history though, the second owner had kept a full log of his fueling and MPG, 26 pages of it!! fairly keen i would say

P3084117_zpsum4q9zjo.jpg

So much project and garage jealousy. I'd like nothing more than a garage to strip the clio down to shell and build back up again, almost OEM but better. That fuel log is maybe a bit toooo keen though.

Looks nice, may be worth drilling out the rivets on the side skirts and removing and checking that the sills are in good condition.

Going by the outlay needed to turn this into something mint it doesn't really count for much.

As someone mentioned, check the sills under the skirts or via the inner rear door cards. If these are shot it might not be worth the grief

Update 15/03/16

Had chance to pull the clio out the workshop yesterday, wanted to start some of the jobs as i had a day off.

Started with removing the wiring from the sub and amp

P3144134_zpsbs3dpa9p.jpg

Pulled the head unit out and removed the wiring

P3144142_zps5ljafe0g.jpg

Pulled the wiring through from the head unit to the footwell

P3144137_zpspb9oo2kg.jpg

P3144136_zpscnfsv5cs.jpg

P3144139_zps9iotnkwk.jpg

Pulled it all through to the footwell and removed it from the battery

P3144140_zpswsz6yi2v.jpg

Glad to get rid of that :thumb:

Next was start pulling the damaged parts off, also start to see what condition everything is in

jacked the car up to get the mass of bolts and torque heads

P3144145_zpsvotwyopj.jpg

Quite a few were rusted unfortunately so these had to be drilled out

P3144147_zpsfhkdzwks.jpg

Cant beat a step drill to remove the heads and also rivets

P3144178_zpsgihpjgoi.jpg

P3144150_zpsk5wtjkug.jpg

Bumper was the first part off, plenty of hidden torx head screws

P3144155_zps0qag00q9.jpg

P3144158_zpsxarlmwxp.jpg

P3144161_zps8nhrt6zr.jpg

Next up the wings, looking at these im definitely going to need a pair

P3144175_zps1oc1zmyj.jpg

always amazed how much crap is underneath all the hidden parts

P3144174_zps5evgu8oi.jpg

to get them off there are two hidden bolt heads behind sills and also one underneath the scuttle panel under the wipers.

That meant the skirts and wipers/panel needed to come off

First off the wipers, one was bloody stuck on so out with the bearing puller.

Also noticed that the bush has gone on the N/S wiper arm so its been rubbing the mechanism

P3144167_zpsgr0qytpb.jpg

P3144168_zpshsulzyqk.jpg

P3144171_zpszljc5ulf.jpg

with these off you can access the bolt heads underneath

P3144170_zpsjfukbu0b.jpg

P3144169_zpsvsvkwetm.jpg

Whipped the headlights out while i was on the front end

P3144162_zps0pqzxhwn.jpg

P3144163_zps8iryayzr.jpg

P3144164_zpszauzx4zs.jpg

P3144165_zpslbf3ehou.jpg

Started to build a decent parts pile as well

P3144184_zpsmujeesgh.jpg

Everything off, the car is starting to look a bit sorry for itself!

P3144202_zpsmrh9yb1k.jpg

A few people have told me to check under the skirts before i go too far money wise in case its too far gone rust wise.

Looking at it theres some surface rust thats going to need attention but doesnt look like its rotting

P3144190_zpschumupt2.jpg

P3144181_zpsmnbzezzu.jpg

P3144180_zps6lyedg5e.jpg

P3144189_zpslhb4zivt.jpg

P3144185_zpsy5fmmypm.jpg

Next up was a look at the oil leak, its fairly bad looking at the engine from above, so off with the plastic guard underneath and the revealed this!!! :doublesho:doublesho:doublesho

P3144194_zpsquhctqjw.jpg

P3144196_zpstykezzxk.jpg

P3144195_zpsfp3oaj8a.jpg

P3144199_zpsqriyrrmh.jpg

Needless to say i thought bad thoughts :censored::censored:

Anyway looking further into it and following the oil i think i found the issue (possibly) it looked like it was coming down from above the engine from the filter housing

P3144192_zpsjsvepn9o.jpg

reached down past the inlet manifold and checked filter and it was loose, like free spinning loose! Tightened and hopefully this is the issue. Will have to degrease and clean the sump etc so i can check when running

the rest of underneath is fairly clean which is a bonus! No knackered bushes or seals

P3144197_zps2avow9lb.jpg

P3144198_zpshd3bc9gj.jpg

So now ive got some parts to find, which is proving interesting!

update soon! :thumb:

OP - just out of curiosity if you ever get your wipers back to this state that you had them....

172%20wipers_zpsyucqbpwt.jpg

The bolts on that wiper arm - should have several metal washers between the bolt itself and the arm. There's also a third bolt that's off to the right of the picture - but I can't recall if that has any metal washers.

Could you let me know how many washers are on each bolt? I 'think' when I reassembled mine, I put the correct number back - but I'd like to make sure!

Cheers,
D.

Didn't know they rotted so much, looks like you'll be doing a proper job of this though. Looking forward to seeing how you get on.
