My 182 sounds like a subaru :(

  RB 182
Driving up a hill so put my foot down a little, starts sluttering then all ok. Come to park up down the road and the engine stalls, on ignition it hessitates and then finally fires up and sounds like a scooby. It stalls on idle so had to keep my foot down to get the car home.

I did change the coilpack and leads yesterday as they came with the car so thought why not. As a precaution I swapped back over to the old ones, checked that the numbers all matched up with the cylinders and it sounds the same and still stalls on idle. Only other work I've done on the car in the last day was fit the cat back in and make the horn work.

Any ideas? Has been running perfect since. I'm guessing injector or spark? Any method to test which might be out?

I was driving to the MOT too (expires next Monday) so this is doing my nut in!

Surely it would have flagged up an issue on the management system? Will cast my eye over it tomorrow as it's dark now.

Small update, unplugged all injectors and tried each one at a time. They all sound rough which i'm guessing it would with only one working at a time? number 3 did not turn over at all so I suspect that will be the faulty injector (looked at the car history and 3 were replaced last year). Cleaned all injectors down and fired up without any problems. Then after a few minutes the engine started to stutter again but went fine. The exhaust is smoking quite a bit when you rev around 2k, I'm hoping this will be to do with the cat that I installed yesterday as it has been sat in the garage for many months.

If it is an injector thing, whos best for quick cheap parts? I can pospone the MOT till next Monday at the latest.

Definitely sounds like an injector issue, just had the same thing on my Cup. You can pick up an injector from Euro's for around £40.

No worries. Also, about identifying the right injector to change, have them all plugged in and the car running on idle, then disconnect one at a time. If the idle changes then re-connect and test the next one. When you disconnect and the idle doesnt change, or changes very little, then you have found the culprit. A code reader will probably tell you which injector is at fault too and is probably the best way to diagnose. A garage will probably charge about £40 to check your error codes, or an RS Tuner might be able to as well but im not sure if it will tell you which injector has the fault.

Car fine this morning till temp was at 1/4 then i noticed a slight flash of the EML light and it went all rough again and stalled. It struggles to turn over but when it did finally I checked all injectors and each one was working. Does this point to a pre cat lambda sensor or still injectors? :(

Cheers, someone is popping over tomorrow with an OBD reader :) Just checked the paperwork and looked under the car and the pre cat sensor is brand new.

Still waiting for someone to drop the reader off and injector to arrive :(

I've pulled all the plugs out and they look considerably cooked considering they are only a year old, does this look right? I've also swapped over the map sensor with one I've had spare, tired unplugging injectors one at a time and all of them make a notable change so it's not as if one stands out over the others.

Going to have to wait for the Reader then dude. Not sure about the state of the plugs, sure someone will be able to comment for you though.

Injector arrived at lunch, as none of them stood out as the issue I swapped number 4 as this seems to be the typical one that goes. All worked fine, took the car for a spin to see if any garages were free to read the code but they were to busy, borrowed my mates one and all was happy days, took the car for a spirited drive to clear the cat from any unburn fuel and crap. Went to fuel up, drove 3/4 of the way home and the problem came back. Complete lack of power, subaru engine back again :( F**KED OFF.

Plugged the code reader in an the last code was P0135 (O2 Sensor Heater Circuit Malfunction - Bank 1 Sensor 1), any ideas what this is? Pre Cat Lambda?

Cleared to code, started it up and re initiated the code reader - 1 found but with N/A so couldnt get a code.

I'm happy to take this upto Mick@Diamond Motors but worried it will konk out mid trip, and I need the car back for Mondays MOT :(

I assume I can plug the post CAT lambda in to see if that will rectify the issue, if it does just buy a new one. Even though only a year old, looking at the spark plugs I'm guessing the lambda could be fecked.

My car is the same at the moment. I have a set of injectors being sent to me, which will hopefully rectify the issue - it happens to me quite regularly right now, it would seem, this will be the third time this year!

Check the ht leads are the right way round, and try a second set. Mine was running like this and turned out to be the leads were put on the wrong way by a friend of mine, second incident was a dead lead, been fine since.

both leads and coilpack changed. I can get a Lucas brand of lambda straight away, anyone know if these are ok to get or stick with Bosch?

Took the car to a garage and plugged it into a decent reader, came up with 20 faults from the past, lambda, injector, trottle position, map sensor, you name it it had it! since I removed the recent ones with my code reader we replaced the pre cat lambda and took it for a spin and it was fine, on my way home it was the same story - runs fine and then out of knowhere it splutters and goes back to the subaru sound 😧 if I back right off and press the trottle soft it goes back to normal but it doesn't feel like a limp mode sort of thing. Plugged in my code reader and nothing is shown.

Will take it back tomorrow to see if it has flagged up any futher issues but the EML light never comes on, it's very odd 😧 No sulphur smell and the previous lambda wasn't that bad condition.

This problem has started on my 182, sounds like a Subaru, down on power, no EML light or any warning lights

Might as well update this, was going to do it when the car was (hopefully) sorted.

The car has been checked (including compression and wire continuity) and all sensors work fine apart from the Lambda, the ECU isn't reading it. The snesor is brand new and it is has voltage so assuming the ECU software is corrup or something damaged. As its locked with RS Tuner i've bought a second hand one off ebay and sent it to Chris@EFI to have the code removed. Will plug this in when it arrives and hope this sorts the issue, if not I need to arrange a way of getting the car to Mick. Its too temprimental to drive and I'm worried I will damage it if it's driven that far. It runs OK'ish with no load, but as soon as you go up a hill or speed up in high gear it struggles and goes back into subaru mode.

My lights arent coming on as a previous owner had taped over the EML light from the other side. So yes it is on, I just cant see it :(

In regards to above, I think it will be an injector issue if the EML light isn't on. Have you tried unplugging each injector electrical connector at a time and listen if the engine noise changes?

I feel your pain mate, Hope u get it sorted.
aye after doing some research I've narrowed it down to an injector issue with mine, haven't had a chance to unplug each injector due to the weather, I'm hoping that's the problem

Finally no rain so first chance I've had to pull the electrical connectors on the injectors today, very noticabable change in the engine when I disconnected 1,2 and 3 engine sounded like it was going to cut out, when I disconnected 4 it changed for a split second and then just sounded like it was with all 4 connected. So number 4 is the culprit and getting changed rapid style, cheers for the advice @Meek_racing

How much would you want for the injectors?

I'm wondering if the issue is a MAP sensor fault or possibly even a wiring problem only shown when the car warms up. What code reader did you use?
