MK1 Diesel...Anyone got one? Some questions

  Civic Vtec y0
Thinking of getting a MK1 diesel as motorway car 4 going back and forward to work...

Just wondering what there like on the motorway at about 70 + 10 MPH in terms of car/road noise and comfort?

Also are they reliable enough and whats the MPG like on them?

Cheers

I wouldn't think it'd be much different from a 1.2, fuel economy wise or anything wise. Wrong?

Anyway, you know you love the sound of the 1.2 motorway whine. :D

Any NA diesel car is a horrible drive and shouldn't exist.

If you want a cheap diesel car look at the Pugs or Clios. Any of the HDis or DCis.

Very much a diesel ....doesn't feel the same as petrol clio imo ...more like a van lol

Fuel wise there ok and it will cruise a 100mph on the motorway

What car do you mean ??

Surely not the 1.9D ??? That would be crying at 100mph. Has anyone driven an LDV (transit tipper style) van ?? They are by far and away the worst things I have ever laid my hands on... The tipper can be used as a slide though so it does have good points... Putting boot dents in the doors every time you get out is kinda fun too :p

Ask Djw Dave to get his gf to reply to you, she had 1 before it was written off. Im sure she saw 90 at some point and it was economical if a bit loud!

I had a mk1 diesel. they just run and run and run. mine had done 185k and even if i drove it hard i still never got less than 40mpg. I swear if i drove it normally i could get close to 50mpg. 18 months ago i could put £10 in easily do 100 miles (45mpg).

Wasnt a nice car to drive really but there are 100's of them going for pennies so if i was strapped for cash thats probably what i'd get!

oh and most of the ones you see going on ebay are ones where the cam belt has gone. only thing that goes wrong with them.

I bought mine with the cambelt gone and bought a 2nd hand head to go on it

If you want 'seriously' cheap running costs, find a MINT 1.5D AX - these will do 60mpg with no effort AND are quite nippy cos so light. OR same engine in Pug 106 or Saxo.

OR go bigger - e.g. a Reno 19 is cheaper than a Clio, Escort cheaper than a Fiesta, Astra cheaper than a Nova/Corsa etc. etc. since 'little' cars are becoming so popular.

BUT running costs almost same!
