HELP, My cam belt snapped this morning

  RenaultSport Clio 172 FF
I think it was the axillary belt that snapped and took the cam belt with it. The infuriating thing is it was booked in for both to be changed next week, and it was well with in the schedule to have done too.

At the moment its in a garage local to me who do a lot of work for me, they are very good and run their own race car too.

So where can i get new vales from, or any of the other parts that are probably FUBAR? Ive checked K-Tech and they are V expensive, I know its not going to be cheap but there must be another company or solution out there.

I normally get my stuff from K-Tech, I know they are expensive but I trust them, and have never had any problems with any of the parts they have supplied me.

I would be thank full for any advice, please no smart arse comments, its not helpful and just takes up time to read.

Thanks again.

Second hand engine is by far the easiest way to go.

From a breakers? How do i know its not going to be a lemon? Before the cam belt went mine was a very strong unit. I dont want to buy a bag of s**t or something that had the tits reved out of it. Mine has never hit the limiter in the 5 years I've had it.

best thing would be to assess the condition of the broken engine. They can very often be repaired very well, and you have the benefit of a rebuilt and refreshed top end once it's done

i wouldnt get it done at your local garage mate, as much as u trust them its a specialist job ,theyre funny engines compared to others ,local garages make the mistake of saying 'yeah we'll do it, we do loads of cambelts' and they dont have the specialist renault locking tools.plus specialists use genuine renault parts

I try plenty hard enough, lol. I take it as far as the shift light and change up.

Sightly off topic, but you say it was well within service intervals? What year is your 172? and how many aux belts has it had?

mine went last nite. and was due in to the garage today. its been taken to garage now and waiting on them to tell me the damage. . .

i had planned to get a full service, brakes all round, and possibly a new cat should that of caused it to fail its mot and had budgeted around 500-700 pounds for this work. this is all the money i have and now the timing belt snapped i dont know what to do. should i do my best to get it running on minimal money or jus get a loan and invest in a new performance ready engine?

Just been told that the cylinders are gone too, they did a compression test on each one and there was no compression in any of the cylinders, so it looks like I need a new engine now rather than cylinder head.

If anyone know of someone who has an engine for sale or know of where I could get one, can you point me in the right direction please?

Hey Yin, I heard the bad news about your motor on BBM and am truely gutted for you mate. DOn't listen to the "Lack of compression" rubbish as that's all it is... rubbish! As Danny has said, there are multiple bent valves and so this is to be expected and they're most likely dodging the job.

Deffo better the devil you know so get yours rebuilt rather than buy a replacement; head off and sent to a local engineers - £200, timing belt kit - £130, aux kit - £90, head set (With bolts) - £60

So that's £480 - Call it £500 with service and coolant; pay my fuel and put me up and i'll come fit the lot for you one Sat ;)

  Discounted 1*2 parts
if it is within the 5 years and 72k I'd be calling Renault customer services for a contribution on the repairs :)

Well it was changed with in 5years ago and 72k miles, you arent the first person to say this. Dont think i'll get anywhere with it though lol.

But has the aux belt been done correctly? Aux is every 36k or 3 years iirc, so depending on age should be on 3rd.

Pmsl at no compression

I'd Just buy a second hand engine tbh

But what would that achieve Ben? You're still gonna spend £400+ on a decent F4R-7XX unit which needs fitting and then you've still got the timing belt and aux belt runs to renew (Stupid if you don't do this or just gluten for punishment). You also assume that the 'new' engine is in good mechanical condition and is without oil leaks.

This happened to me last year mate, feel sorry for you.

My engine sounded in the same state as yours, and i took advice from here, and got a fresh top end rebuild.
All in for £860. Quite pricey, but i could have bought a duffer engine off ebay for £500.

Go for the rebuild, and fair play to you MicKPM, could do with more people like you on here ;)

Hi
New to this forum, followed this thread and was wondering if you could give me some info.
I have a 1149cc 8v clio 53 plate busted cambelt, head has been stripped and rebuilt just to re assy, what is the order for tightening head bolts and what is the torque. Also what is the gap for inlet and exhaust valves when cold.
Thanks in advance.:)
