Any ideas what this noise is?

any loss in performance? sounds like a tappet or even a valve.

Only reason i noticed was cos my dad heard it when i was coming home, car drives fine, sounds like its coming from under the cover that forms part of the engine mount.

Depahser? If standing facing the engine it's the bit to the left of the oil cap.

I had a noise like that on my 172 it turned out the cam belt tensionor bearing had gone, could be a bearing or waterpump

it had a new cambelt, bearings and waterpump last year.

If i go undue that cover nothing nasty is going to happen?

Did'nt someone on here a couple of months ago have this similar issue, cant bloody remeber who it was, does the noise go away with rievs or is it there all the time, if all the time points to bearing

I had a noise coming from the cam cover... turned out the belt was loose and was flapping on the cam cover. :S

Looks like it normally looks to me? had a torch shinning in there.

Think you'll end up having the cam cover off that to find out what it is tbh. Mare of a job, cambelt again for a start.

De-phaser pulley, sounds like a diesel on idle then goes silent when revving/driving, if it does not do this then could be more involved.
Cambelt job again basically, de-phaser is around £150 from Renault but should be able to get a used on from the forum for sensible money.

so i'm looking at about £500+?

Also what will happen if i keep driving it in the short term?

Also i have no idea how long it's been doing this, as was only today we noticed.

so my car will not be on it's 4th gearbox and 3rd cambelt, nice.

will need doing soon as IMO
and yes is not going to be cheap, you could always just have a non-genuine timing belt fitted as it sounds like you had a full kit fitted a while ago, GSF do the belt on its own for £20, then non-genuine accessory belt is around £10(GSF), used de-phaser pulley from Specialist breakers £50 odd?
Then its just the labour to have it fitted.

lol fit a cup interior first, sell the wheel and fit a 1.2 one , 1.2 door cards, grab handles etc

Are these on hydraulic lifters? It sounds exactly like a stuck lifter to me. If Im right you'll damage a cam lobe and the duff lifter by continuing to run it.

Cheers for all this help guys, much appreciate it.

If you look at the 1st video i do rev it slightly and it seams to get quieter.

Think i'm gonna have to take a day of work to get it sorted, peice of poo.

Its going to cost you a lot of money to fix the noise - even if you knew exactly what it was. Unless you are confident you know what the problem is Id be inclined to look out for a good replacement engine and do a complete swap.

Remember you wont need the starter motor, alternator, gearbox etc and you could do a cambelt change on the replacement engine before it goes into the car.

Just a thought.

It'd probably end up quicker to drop a new lump in it. Its just cost really, i'd have no doubt its repairable but its just if you can do it yourself or not.

If you can DIY and can live without the car for a few days i'd be tempted to get the engine out as it'll be far less fiddly with it out.

If it is a case of what you are saying think i'll have to just drive it till it dies, no way can i afford to fix it, just spend £1k on a geargox!
