The easiest way the remove that bit is to remove the wiper motor as the bolts are easier to get to, but you may have to loosen the heater fan box from inside the car, or the other option is to remove the blower box then you can get the middle piece out. You can buy a new seal i'm sure.

In my opinion I bought a ph1 as its was a bit more rare around where I live, and just generally prefer the look of a ph1.

The ph1 plenum won't fit the ph2 unless you block the idle control valve hole by the throttle body mounting surface, otherwise the plenum i think is the same.

i wouldn't say it will wear them out faster from previous experience, they are made from polyurethene which is a harder compound, and as far as I know they are like wishbone and anti-roll bushes last ten times longer.
