172 track car

  evo 6
i've currently got a civic type r, but i'm planning on trading it in for a ph1 172 to turn into a track car (but still usable on the road) so far i've had a snoop round k-tec website and have got my shopping list:
bilstein suspension (shocks etc)
strut braces
full cage
buckets
no interior
superchip
air filter
manifold & full stainless

also thinking about throttle bodies and a cam but not sure how clios respond 2 them and if it's worth my hard earned pennies

plus any other advice would be very welcome as i have very little knowledge of the clio and need your expert advice

cheers people

u need to look in other places than k-tec mate. While their stuff is good qauilty, alot of it is more for looks... The strut braces are not worth it if you want them for performance.. Mine do nothing and are with H&R suspension.

Buckets your best off phoning John Harris at Demon Tweeks. He offers CS members a good discount, anything upto 25%.

scarp the superchip, get the 182 manifold, a yozza decat, and full stainless...then get ya inlets done by BenR and geta custom map done at RS tuning.

without doing the TB's etc thats probably the best way to get any more power from it.

TB's and Cams though are a fair few grand. hardly worth it in my opinion, if i wanted to commit that much, id just buy a porsche to start with

i'd get a custom manifold made, i might have 2 get some more details off you when i've got the car about where to go.

what is your opinion on fse boost valves?
how many ponies do you think we'd be sittin on then coz my CTR is running about 220 bhp and i don't wanna be going backwards, and i know a clio is lighter but i still wanna be over the 200 mark
and do you have 2 pay 2 be a member on here?

and do u have 2 pay 2 be a member on here???

  RS Clio 200
if you dont wanna go backwards, then dont get a clio.
the 2.0 16v is already a pretty stressed engine, and its hard to get much more out without spending stupid amounts.

Depends if your talking about straight line speed or fun factor.

  RS Clio 200
Is it not worth getting a cup?

Depends what you want dont it.

Personally i chose to get an 02 plate FF. It has the ABS and aircon, but no ESP.

ABS - while i have never had it kick in yet, i like having it there should i hit a patch of ice etc on the cold mornings. Hardly weighs much anyway.

Aircon - i use the clio everyday so wanted it

ESP - GHEY!!! Wheres the fun in relying on a computer to keep you on the rubber not the roof.

On a mre serious note though mate, if you really dont wanna go backwars on power, then dont go for a clio

  RS Clio 200
wouldnt you? Ask Christurbo. Ask ME!

Also, he said in the OP that he still needs it for road too.

Mine is for track, but its a long term project, so as time goes on the comforts will be removed as i get another car for road use.

  evo 6
i'm not fussed about creature comforts, road worthy 2 me means i don't have 2 take it 2 the track on a trailer. as long as it's not massively slower than my CTR but i primarily i want something smaller lighter to throw around a track. the civic handles but it doesn't quite feel like a go kart which i think the clio would be

  RS Clio 200
if you want go kart, then go Cooper S (gp) lol...

CLio would meet what you want then.

The cup is technically gonna be better for you. The FF has shorter gearing though to allow for the extra weight i beleive... so in theory once stripped etc etc it should be faster ;)

  evo 6
mini is a bit camp, lol (no offense to anyone that owns one, that's just my personal opinion)

i'm deffinately gettin persuaded 2 get 1. do u guys go on many track days? (sorry 4 goin a bit off topic)

Just buy a 172 cup, atleast test drive it, you'll cream your pants when you do.
(kinda wishes i had a cup)

  evo 6
yeah, but i quite like what S22 said about the ff havin shorter gears and when i strip it out it'll be lighter than the cup, and i think the cups r more expensive.

cups are cheaper? (for same age anyhow) cup has no leather, air con, xenons, auto wipers, etc so is already stripped out pretty much, and i don't think you'd notice the difference in the gears.

  RS Clio 200
dont hold me to that matt.... im not 100% certain, but i think they do.

I test drove some Cups before i got my FF, and to be honest, felt no different.
the FF now feels 20 times better than any of the cups i tried with whati have done so far.

skip the remap, exhaust etc and go for handling mods.

take it back to basics and make the car sit properly on the road, try and remove understeer and sort the brakes out.

If it doesn't go round corners or stop like you want it to then there's no point in wasting money on engine mods that imo have very little benefit on a naturally aspirated engine.

I may stretch to a remap and cat-back exhaust at some point - but this is for power/torque delivery rather than outright numbers. Need to make sure the handling is right first though :D

  RS Clio 200
/\/\ pretty much sums it up.

first things i did were the exhaust in fairness, but after that was brakes, wider track and H&R suspenion.
brakes and H&R's being the best things i have done.

I think the next best thing is gonna be the buckets. Better driving position, and better holding should bring it all together nicely

Mine's on 80k as of tomorrow, been driven hard but smoothly all its life
and meticulously maintained.

Never missed a beat.

They're fine on track on standard suspension. They have more to offer than most people are prepared to take handling wise. Money is far better spent on lines, fluid, pads and discs, decat, ECU with a few extra rpm, seats, wheel, and most importantly, track rubber.

Apart from seats and wheel, that's what I've done to mine.

Track rubber and brakes alone make it a very capable little car. I love mine (in case you hadn't guessed ;) )

does air con add much weight and is it a ball ache 2 remove if it does? never had air con before and don't really see the need, as long as ur window goes down :D and the seats would get pulled out in exchange 4 some buckets

and if it's cheaper for a cup that also sounds good,

  evo 6
a nice set of slicks is already a definate, just forgot 2 put it on my original list

and brakes is obvious on a track car, but i wanted some engine advice as i don't really know much about them

  RS Clio 200
insurance may well be a bit more on a cup though due to some idiots getting their hands on them, writing em off then blamin lack of ABS, when all they needed to do was learn to drive and be more sensible LOL

  evo 6
insurance isn't really a problem, i hate ABS, and all the other computer crap they put in cars these days. i think the cup sounds better though coz of the lack of driver aids and air con

  evo 6
they do sell all that stuff but ur prob best ringing them coz the website looks a little bit iffy. i usually just go into the shop, but if u ring them they should sort you out.

you dont really need engine mods for track days, at rockingham a few weeks ago there were 5 or 6 of the new clio 197 race cars, there were clearly the fastest cars out on track, the conditions were poor, track was very slippery, and the 197 had the full race wets on which would have heated up really well and given them grip, combined with the 4pots and great suspension set up they were over taking most cars, although they are race drivers which probably helped!

Also someone gave me a performance gti french cars mag yesterday, one of the writers has a 172 cup, with wilwood 4 pots and some other mods, this article was on the LEDA coilovers they had just fitted, they said how the cup had lost all its feel and they were not impressed, it ended up with them saying its either put the standard suspension back on or take the car to LEDA for further tests!

172 cup, strip it, seats, harnesses, good brakes(cooling ducts), maybe coilovers, good set up, set of simi slicks, new exhaust etc imo its not worth spending silly money on the engine, suspension, brakes, tyres and learning to dirve it on a track!

  evo 6
cheers dave, sounds like sound advice, i think a cup is defo the choice for me, although in time may need a little engine tuning but i think that would come after handling and braking

so... has anyone got a cup for sale? lol

  M2 Competition
Aye, not a lot between them, but on track the cup has a slight edge over the others.

s22, didnt christurbo get yoz to strip the aircon and all the fullfat bits out of his? (basically turning it into a cup)

Anyways, buy a 172cup, tis a fine car as standard, but to make it more track focused, over time add the following bits...

brakes- brembo hc's, ds2500 pads, braided hoses.

suspension- h&r coilovers, or standard shocks with eibach sportlines.

interior- remove rear seats, carpet etc, fit buckets and harnesses. 320mm sparco steering wheel (or similar).

exhaust- yozzasport/ prospeed, track exhaust with decat.

engine- rs tuning remap, ben r's magic manifold work, possibly better cold air feed (caf) from front of car, itg panel filter in standard airbox.

if you plan on rolling add a cage to that too, but will add about 35kg of weight.

can you get a cup in the phs1 172, coz i've just had a quick look on autotrader and only found the 172 with triangular headlights
