182_steve's FF 182 progress thread!

Plus you have the oe gear gaiter so it looks more subtle.

Based on the reviews i dont think youll be disappointed with it.

Exactly right mate, having the new gear gaiter at least makes it look a tiny bit more subtle - a result actually as one of the clips are broken on my current one (standard clio issue!!), this being the one nearest the handbrake and it is stuck down with hidden tape to try and stop it lifting up when in certain gears. Bought the new gaiter last year but never put it on, so with the PMS i'll also sort out a little niggly thing too!

oOOOohh, gonna be good with the PMS shifter! Sorry if I missed it, but did you go for the silver shaft?

Oh I don't know actually? There isn't a colour choice is there? I got what ever it comes with bud although i'm sure it is silver. I know the BMS shifter is also silver if that's what you're thinking of?

Denied I’ll be flying Thursday morning otherwise I’d have popped down.

Gutted mate! Was going to say pop down but wondered if the two things might over lap

So Thursday night was the night to get the Pure Motorsport shifter fitted. I went down to the local Renault dealer to see Mick, our local mechanic friend who was fitting it for me - I truly take my hat off to anyone who would attempt to fit one of these on the driveway. The ramp just makes it sooo much easier and it is certainly not a five minute job - it still took him quite a while to get it right and the exhaust had to be loosened, heat shields taken off etc to gain access and make life easier for getting the old tower out and new one in etc - I was even sat in the car raised up on the ramp helping with the gears from inside while he aligned it all from underneath!

Anyway, photos! Got the car into the workshop and I got everything out and ready to be fitted so we knew what we had;

........ and a random engine bay shot, because I could! :laughing:

Anyway, one point to note when fitting this kit is that the Pure Motorsport instructions make no mention or reference to keeping the boot for when the new pivot gets fitted!

Mick made a good point here that it's there for a reason and should be kept and so, it fitted nice and snugly over the new one;

A couple of random photos of new parts fitted along the way and how it all looks when on;

Here we see the vibration damper fitted. There's not actually much room to fit it but this was the best place.

When changing gear, it does slightly touch the wire in the picture........ oxygen sensor?......... but doesn't move it or rub against it/cause any harm so Mick was happy to leave it as it is;

40316497421_fcb1350c39_b.jpg

This was the shifter and damper fitted. The gears were lined up and all felt good......... I took it round the block and felt no vibrations from under the car etc (although wasn't at motorway speeds or anything). The thing that was really annoying me almost straight away was the vibration and rattle type noise from the top of the tower, under the gear gaiter, inside the car. It was rattling away, but touch it and it stopped........ let go, rattled again. So annoying, but nothing could be done at now 9:30 in the evening and car got put away again in the garage.

Skip forward to this morning and I got the car out again, round the block I went, sure enough, rattle rattle rattle. My OCD and need for everything to be neat and just so was not happy about this (lol) so I thought of a very simple solution. Luckily, the new gear gaiter popped out again without breaking the clips!!! Phew!

I got an elastic band and did this;

40316497161_048c4bdefb_b.jpg

I then fired up the car again, let it idle, no rattle....... was gently revving it, no rattle........ the band has enough 'give' to allow the movement for the gear changes (this is where a solid cable tie would be no good) and doesn't cause any issue, but is tight enough to stop it vibrating. To stop the band slipping off, I've just neatly held it down with some tape;

It's a bit 'basic' I know, but all back together with the brand new gaiter and you would never know..........

Time will tell what it's like at a steady 60/70mph cruising speed but for what I've driven so far, it doesn't rattle and knock now like a racing car. Hopefully 182_steve's elastic band mod and Pure Motorsport damper under the car will work well 😂

The Sparco wheel along with the shifter looks great! Would love one of these as the throw is so long on the standard stick, really does my head in sometimes.
Send this thread over to PMS, so they know to include a rubber band in their fitting kits from now on haha.

Spent some more time on the car today giving it it's first bath of the year although it wasn't majorly dirty, tried the new Auto Finesse products I purchased recently and very pleased with the results. Only used the shampoo and spray wax for now;

Bit of beading after the shampoo and wash before being dried, but room for improvement;

The spray wax gave a nice glossy look to the car;

Also took this one to show the smaller front plate, just sits on the bumper nicely without hanging over;

Does your's do the same bud? I'm guessing they are all the same! Haha yes a cheap and easy fix for once!!
Yes I find myself holding it when on the motorway as that does make a difference, I haven't got the damper so would be interested to see if the elastic band makes a difference to mine, just have to find/buy an elastic band and I will give it a go :up:

@-Rob all fitted now if you wanted to see it all done and what it's like :up:

Ahhh I see yes that's what I was doing just driving round the block, holding it I mean, so can only imagine what it would be like on a motorway! Give the band a go mate, can't do any harm

That looks fantastic, surprisingly it doesn't look like it's "too much" in the cabin either with a clean install. Look forward to seeing the car at a meet, really want to pull the plug on one but other things have taken priority. Until I sell other car parts.

Cars looking very clean, silver alloys just look so clean!

Did you have to drop the cat out in the end or was there enough room to get the old tower out and the new one in?

No didn't have to take the cat out in the end as its quite a narrow one/small but did have to slacken all the exhaust though to have a bit more give - was tight getting the old tower out and a fraction easier getting the new tower in, but still a tight fit!

Hope the holiday is going amazing bud :smile:

Cheers :up: it IS a lot of money, but as a wise man once said, you get what you pay for! Just remember the elastic band lol!

But how does it feel now its in?!

Feels good! Gears are nice and tight and the longer gearstick is quite comfortable - gears were not sloppy or anything before, but you can feel the difference and why these kits are so popular!

So satisfying when a free quick mod cures a very annoying issue - great stuff @182_steve

#elasticbandmod

Thanks Paul, do you think that's a new hashtag that could 'trend' ?? (not that I know what that actually means 😂)

So the latest news is, I have an oil leak........ marvellous! 😊

This was spotted last week when the tray was taken off the bottom of the car when the PMS went on and the tray was wet on the inside, signs of oil running down bla bla. So this was all cleaned and wiped away before the car got put back together to see if it continues to leak - only a few days later, I now have a nice bit of oil in the metal tray that I keep under the car in the garage. Not lots, but enough.... I don't want anything!!

So it's booked into the local Renault for the 8th March to be looked at and hopefully sorted - as a side note, the local meet and coast road run that's been planned for the 4th March was looking doubtful for me as I'm away that weekend - this has now cemented that I won't be at this one as I don't want to make anything worse. At least I don't have to rush back from being away!

Anyway, on a positive note, I used man maths and thought "if the cars going in anyway, why not get the Cup shocks sorted at the same time" :smile:

This is something I've wanted to get done for a while now as even though my car was Cup packed from new, i'm 99.99% sure what is on the car, is not Renault! So long story short, 4 brand new genuine Cup shocks have been ordered and due to having a very good friend who works at Renault, I got them for a price I couldn't turn down - so oil leak to sort, but new Cup shocks to look forward to all being well, I think this surely must be everything I wanted to do, done to the car now? Ummm...............

Nice one Stevo!

I've just got some Cooksports from @Louis and new cup shocks all round from RPD to fit :)

Nice one bud, two birds one stone, im sure the car will feel great on new oem shocks.

Thanks bud, I hope so too - it's already on Cooksports and what with the new oem top mounts and whiteline, that'll be the handling all sorted for what I want to do to it!

Oil leak? Pah, I think the only fluid that doesn't leak from mine is brake fluid 😂

That's a good effort Jon 😂

Guaranteed to be leaking from either the rocker cover or the sump.

Sump gasket was changed in July last year so my fingers are firmly crossed it's just the rocker cover gasket!!

Ahh nice!! So you'll be now in the same boat as me, fingers crossed it will be a really good set up - I think it's almost guaranteed it will be however!

If it is the cam cover leaking then the cambelt will have to be removed and the cam pulleys.

Yep, I've got KW V1 coilovers on at the moment, however they're been on the car for a few years now with no protection so they really need a refurb and I fancy a change. New cup shocks, springs, top mounts and wishbones all to go on will make it feeling fresh hopefully!

Make sure to torque up wishbones with wheels on the ground or jacked up on the hub :)
