Track phase 182



Car looks great with those silver mirrors, reminds me of the brushed aluminium Audi RS type.

Thanks bud, tbh as homo as it sounds your thread was a big inspiration to looking into the tricolour trophy and building a car to suit - love the colour on yours.
Going to start drawing up some designs for decals on mine soon :)
 
Well its first outing was proper good like!

Traveled up Friday night to split the driving up and back in one day as well as a full day on track would of killed me.

The day was very successful, the car ran faultlessly all day, apart from the adjuster on the bottom of my ASTs falling off somewhere round the GT circuit, and my CV boot making a mess of the inside of the arch and everything near that, despite not having a spare it managed to survive without any grease in it.

In terms of set up, I spent most of the morning facing the wrong way, either from not warming the tyres enough or just not gauging the car well enough. Despite this I felt very confident and comfortable in the car which is great news.

Im pretty inexperienced in terms of track days/cars in general really (Think its my 5th trackday) so spent most of the day practising to really dial in trail braking and perfecting my heel toe beforehand - I found trail braking really effective on the hairpins after the long straights as those corners at Bedford really just seem to feel dead slow and really bog the car down if you don't get them right. But yep was a great day most importantly meeting more of the crew and having good battles out on track. Another thing i need to consider is noise levels, spent most of the day trying to get as far away as possible to the DB meter while getting noise boarded early on in the morning.

Not sure who to go to to sort out a new adjuster, I

guess Curtis - People spending £1500 on new coilovers and still don't get through to him, will he reply to me about a small adjuster haha.

What type of issues, did you fill up at the circuit, what is "David in the Cup" username?
Nice to see Tom's 182 Shell being used properly on track btw. Shame he was too useless to do it himself 😂

I'd speak to AST directly to get an adjuster. A lot more hope than with Curtis I think.

As you say, when he's sorting out 10s of thousands of pounds worth of suspension for race teams. Little things, like an adjuster and my shock bolts are probably right at the back of his priority list. Which is a shame as it tarnishes the customer service, but the products are so good people deal with it haha

Did you fill up with fuel at Bedford Autodrome then? Just asked if @williamsclio1 if he did. Will help me get to the bottom of my issues.

Im just pleased to see it moving again on track, some great memories with that car!!

I've complained, so want some additional ammo to get back to them with, ruined my afternoon completely.

Yeah, he's one of my best mates, so know him fairly well lol :up: is a shame he didnt finish it, but glad its found a new home!!
I was driving the blue cooper s, was only really out in the morning though ... ill let you know re: the fuel etc, will do some more digging...
 
How were the rear brakes? Did they stop locking up?
Yep all good, managed to sort the issue with the 2 x pressure reducers plus a AP bias valve.

Set up is perfect now, getting literally no input from the rear brakes at all - which is perfect. maybe could get away with 1 pressure reducer and dial it out on the bias. but that's just me playing.
 
Few photos that were taken at Bedford, knew the camera man had caught a few spins on there.. as when I would straighten up I would always see him crouching on the exit of the corner looking down in his lens in disgust haha...

Well since my corner weighting session I've become a bit obsessed with dropping more weight from the car.

Last night very tired from work I went on a bit of a spending spree. Which I will reveal in about 10 days when the pair of then are made.

In addition to this I wasn't that impressed with the ds3000s at bedford with some laps they were letting me down, so I've decided to try the rc6s instead and see how that goes.

Also phoned greenlight and got a quote on a limited mileage policy which really wasn't to bad at all at around £530 for the year with all mods declared considering I'm 21 with 3 years NCB I'm happy. But I still need to buy a tow bar and fit that to the 330ci, and also a trailer as I love driving the clio short journeys but to track and back is a no no.

Started on jotting down what wire does what etc so I can get rid of the stalks and put them on switches on the dashboard, I'm tempted to make a separate loom for that day when I buy a standalone ecu that can run the engine while my own loom runs all the interior s**t.

The good and bad thing about it was it was very easy to remove with molegrips which suggest a person who previously owned this was to lazy to find a spare plug for the filler. Lucky it's the same size as the lamda blanks on my ktec exhaust, so a little swap and all sorted.

So recent events have forced me to part with my 182 (which can be seen below) lots of money has been poured into it as you can all understand, and is currently up for sale.

It recently underwent a bit of surgery due to a crunching 3rd gear and a dodgy starter motor, so I decided to remove the engine as a hole, as before the sale it would give me a good oportunity to clean it up - my thought process behind this was last time i removed a 182 box it was by dropping the subframe on my back on a gravel drive - it was unpleasant!

So I began sourcing stuff I needed, I borrowed an engine crane from a @CUB off here, who was very helpful providing that, and when I say stuff that was all I needed really.. haha but yep top man he is!

So it was a big learning curve and it was the first time I removed an engine, but it came out without any issues which I was pleased about.

and there she is back in and all cleaned up with no issues, apart from the live wire of the starter motor was touching the trigger wire... when I connected the battery I thought I had managed to hotwire my car as it started turning over...

Moving on...

In addition to this I have bought myself a run in 132k phase 1 - I've always wanted one and now is probably the right time to, the title suggests this will be tracked, and further down the line when a daily is sourced - it certainly will be.

I bought it very much standard, it hasn't been looked the roof looks like someone's had a dance on it, but hey its cheap and the front end is cool af.

First thing I did was change the rear lights to ph2, but not I'm very much regretting it since I picked up a cup spoiler... 😧 (for £25 bargaaaaain)

It was raining, and garage space is minimal...

2nd update was to replace the drivers side door, which the guy had supplied - turns out a Ph2 door will fit in a 197

also put some ph2 bump strips along with colour coded door handles... which is a Ph2 mod I do stand by! haha

So I'm currently in process of relocating the battery to the boot just waiting on a
 
So going from getting back from bedford with a horrendous misfire, I replaced the injectors which seemed to cure the main misfire but there was still a misfire on idle that I could not diagnose.

I remembered when i originally bought the ph1 he supplied a new fuel filter with it. So i chucked that on today loving life with the ph1 external fuel filter set up so it was just a case of plug and play, and that has seemed to have done to trick...

Im not sure if the misfire was caused by using bedford fuel, but it seemed to be quite consistant with other members. Anyway im pretty sure everythings all good now, it doesnt start first time generally when it hasnt been used if i dont use the throttle but i think thats another issue (icv or summin)

Also managed to get hold of a replacement adjuster to replace the one thats fallen off, which i thought was gonna be a massive ballache but kevin @ kamracing sorted me out. Win.

Gave it a clean too...

So haven't updated much on here because the car is just running and I'm not really fiddling with it to much, but there's a few things in the pipework.

First if all I bought a new daily, selling the 330ci for a 320cd, which is a lot better on fuel, insurance and for towing in the future.

The spare cash from this meant I could buy a new QR, I went for a self aligning GoRace, not cheap but fantastic quality

So I set about planning on how to fit it to keep my steering position the same (which is pretty far back)

So I had this machined so it can sleeve the steering column and the QR slug together.

This has now been welded either end and is obviously now very secure.

These pictures are from the test fit earlier. The plan is to remove the casing that holds the ignition barrel and make up a few brackets that go from the dash roll cage bar to the steering column.

Also there is obviously quite a lot of leverage on the bearing of the steering column so maybe an addition bearing being fitted to the shaft that was milled above will help keep the longevity of that.

Mate managed to get the pug insured so we obviously had to have a play...

In other news I managed to get the opportunity to help out Cor Euser team in the pits for the silverstone 24hour. This was a great experience and will hopefully be doing more in the future.

Anyway next plans for the car are to sort out the fiberglass doors.

Need to source some mk1 kangoo hinges to get them fitted and I'll wrap them black to save some money on paint.

Annd gonna have a good rewire of the car and sort out a new dash, maybe a fiberglass jobby or make up my own

Yeah the car got built super quickly then it was just teething issues with the brakes for ages! Hey ho, now there hardly anything to do, I wish I was back at your stage, although this winter its gonna get all cleaned up properly!

Just about had time to do a few things today.


Firstly got round to fitting the door cards i kept putting off.

Smartens everything up for sure.


Secondly i wasnt happy with my seating position (to high)

So I set about doing that, very fiddly wrestling with the weight of the seat and trying to find a good position.

In the end i flipped the mount upside down and shortened them so the seats would practically be on the floor, well just above the crotch eyelets, this was perfect untill I realised that the seat hits the door bar.

Balls, so had to rethink that in the end i settled with the height below. Really havent got that much room to play with.


Anyway in further news I bought myself my first mig welder so cant wait for that to be delivered and start playing around!

For this season Im try get as much seat time as possible being new to the car im still not 100% on the set up and I also dont have 'that' much experience on track, so would like to get a lot more time in.

But maybe a few sprints/hillclimbs this year for sure.

But next year if the car is still with me, I built it with the intention of racing so will hopefully be competiting in the Tricolore Trophy - production plus.

Sounds promising! I have had mine 4 years now and debating a rebuild over the summer, what money I would save doing £250 track days get a new cage, seat, diff etc etc so it will be race ready for whenever I want it.
Maybe look to do a msv trophy towards end of the season

Yeah its all about balencing finances really.

At the end of the day currently I cant afford it.

Yeah if thats happening for sure, remove the engine while youre there, then you get the gearbox out easy then can spend time tidying!

The 182 saw Blyton yesterday for a test day, that I managed to get on, only 4 cars on the day so lots of time to sort the car out, and enjoy it.

First time Id been to blyton, and despite the weather was a great track.

The morning saw puddles everywhere on track, and was proper greasy due to the warm weather beforehand/rubber on track.

Annoyingly i hadnt got round to sorting some proper wets yet, so my road tyres (toyo proxes tr1s) had to do, absolutely shocking tyres to say the lease.

Further along the day the track was starting to dry out in patches, which meant some unusual line choices while blasting down to a dry patch on the inside, braking as hard you could then swerving back into the racing line and trying to make the corner. This was great the first time id been on track in the rain and it was great!

The last session before lunch saw the track pretty much dry, which mean the track had to be re-learnt all over again, this is when the pace started to pick up and smiles starting to get bigger, what a fast track! Loved it!

So yeah went off to the pub for lunch, and came back to this...

Ooops, turns out the curb I smashed into at 'the wiggler' cracked my sump, pretty gutted about this, but considering the day was free and all I had to pay for was fuel I couldnt complain to much! New sump time!

This was also a first for the daily 320cd to tow the clio, it towed excellent all day for the 3.5 hour drive there and 3 hour drive back, and averaged around 45mpg too.

Also colour co-ordination game is strong here...

So yeah will get some footage up later, and i have some video of me going over the curb that caused the sump issue.

But yeah all back home, will remove sump this week, weather dependant and get that sorted ready for Castle coombe in June.

Just replaced my sump gasket, what a pain in the ass of a job lol. Made harder by my exhaust manifold tbf tho.

Yep started on it today, just gonna drop subframe as a hole I think, although cant get a track rod end out the hub after a lot of smashing it with a hammer!
