Young People Who Like Modified Cars Take Note!

  EK4 SIR CIVIC 185 BHP
Sad to hear it turn out that way =/ on the bright side least you had some fun ^^ good luck to yoru near future m8, thanks for advice im young also :D im 18 next week but i aint modifying my car its all standard and gonna stay that way :D

  RenaultSport 197
After reading this post I think im just gonna get my 17"'s thats ive wanted for a long time and call it quits!! Then that way, I too in 3 years time (when my loan is paid off) can get myself a nicer car :D

  Clio 182FF
nice to see someone talk sense about this type of thing i know soo many people that have done this sort of thing and now in the same situation!

  clio 1.4 petrol
Well to be honest im at that stage where im just turned 18. I have a a clio 2 ph1 like the thread starters. Iv already spent about £1750 with alloys, lowering, induction kit, mtx audio amp and sub and speakers. Now with 3 or 4 thousand in my bank im looking into bodykits etc. i was quoted 1500 for the rieger subtle one I like fitted and painted with the rest of my car colour coded. Now heres the difficult decision. Do i go ahead with this? or do i wait to im 20 with 2 years ncb and get a 2.0 litre car ? (i did a quote out of interest and when im 20 i can get clio sport for 1300 insurance in 2 years). Could possible even try go for a civic or nice focus instead then as well. Im worried that if i spend a lot of money on my first car i wont afford a better one in couple of years. However i do really enjoying driving my first car and modifying it. please help haha.

  172
i agree completely with the first post, however...

If the whole idea of buying a car is to get to the top model asap then i think the whole modding scene would be very bland, everyone owning 172/182's etc. I hate silly bodykits but when done correctly they can look good whilst still enabling the owner to afford the insurance etc.

You dont need a 2 litre to look good. I dont know many once they start driving to say "i know ill save for a few years and run a 1.2 until the day when i can afford a 182". By that time new models have arrived, the 172/182 range looks dated and you look elsewhere. As soon as you get in your car when you pass you're already looking at alloys etc and admiring other modded cars passing you on the road. Its either in your blood or not.

The Clio in the thread looks good, but for me when you mod a car i'd like to think i can put it back to standard at some point if i needed to to enable me to sell it. thats what ive always done.

just me 2 pence worth...

  Turbos.
Likewise i would only modify a car which can be reverted back to normal.

You live and learn fella, part of being young. No point dwelling on the past.

  Astra 1.8 SRi
When i passed my test at 17 i got a 1.0 Citroen AX, yeah it was unappealing to look at and slow and yeah my mates laughed when they had their "faster" cars, but bollox too it, it cost bugger all during the 18 months I had it and i saved a lot of money by not buying something that would of left me skint, now I have the Astra and am in decent financia state to get the 182 for my 21st b'day.

I suppose though I'm not really into the modding side (ie. ridiculous bodykits & daft big alloys) so I can't really comment fully, but having the money to get a better car without having bankrupted myself is satisfying.

  Motorbikes
Very good thread this one with wise advise from CrazyClio.

I wanted to lower mine, fit an exhaust, IK, wheels etc but I never got round to it as I always spent it (when ever I got it) on my real interest of mountain biking. I think I would have regretted wasting it on the car as I'm now bored of it, but I'm still not bored of having a £4k worth of bicycles sitting in my garage and never will be.

  MK1 monster
this is a great thread i havent spent alot on bodywork just £££££'s on repairs but i still love my clio!!

  CLIO MK1 1.2
i started with a clio 1.2 prima, i didnt do anything 2 this. 2 years i ago i brought a 1.8 16v, and since ave done everything i can 2 it, spent about £10000 on but at da end of the day it is what u like doing.

 Id really like to know where you get your quote from, coz the cheapest ive had on a 182 is 2800 quid fully comp and im 21 this year!...

  Mk2 Ph1 1.2
I dont see modding as a waste of money as i really enjoy styling my clio to look like i want it to. I had a mk1 clio 1.4RT with bodykit, alloys, exhaust all that shizzle and it was written off, thanks to a taxi not paying attention to the m'way. All that money just gone in a second...that hasn't stopped me tho as i now have a 1.2Rt MK1 ph1 and i intend to do the same again.
I can't afford to get a 2.0litre unless i get it on finance and i aint doin that plus the insurance would kill me.
Why do people on this forum have such a problem with people personalising there cars in a big way and why does it have to be such an issue. how many standared 2.0sports are there???
I'd rather have a modded car because 1 its different and 2 no-one else has got the same car as me.

  Clio 1.2 16v Dynamique
Surely the insurance is crippling you by adding mods though. A modified 1.2 won't get anywhere near the same quotes as a standard one, wouldn't be surprised if they were that far off quotes for a 172.

My insurance is ridiculous as it is at 17 and I'm not allowed to touch my car modification wise.

Great post CrazyClio. Over the last 10yrs I have wasted thousands on cars, drink, drugs, hookers, its all good!

  Black 172 MK2
very wise words. TBH i think your clio looks very good. theres ALOT worse out there. The first and last pics look very nice.

  Racing Blue 182
Nice write up and so true, i have been there and done that, look back now and think what a waste

My first car
crashed1.jpg

When i look back, the best thing i ever did wash write it off, if not i would have spend thousands on ''modding'' it

Then i got a clio and put stupid chromes on it, with lexus shites, lowered with tinted windows

Realised i was wasting all my money on it, so got this

Jamie007gjgd.jpg

and did this too it ( decent mods imo)

DSC02946.jpg

Sold it (at a loss of £3k in a year)

Should be getting this

vx220.jpg

Although i have spend a lot on my cars at the age of 20, i got out of the max power modding scene just before i wasted a massive amount of money

I never look back though

  Clio 172 mk2
I think everyone goes through stages of modding cars to different degrees.....often with more cosmetic mods when your younger due to the insurance issues.

I'm not a fan myself but I can respect the amount of time etc that goes into cars which are done properly:)

  Motorbikes
If you want to spend the money on it at the time its because thats what you like then its ok, but never regret it as its whats you wanted.

  2002 Clio Sport 172
4 weeks and 5 days ago i traded in my Saxo 1.4 westcoast which was a full vts bar the engine i bought it one year old and spent about 8k on it so about £16.5k all in and the last year i owned it i hated every moment, it cost £1700.00 for the last mot cos it was lowered and had massive rims on it ect ect ect and i couldnt leave it parked anywhere... In the last 6 months i owed it the following happened....

1. Garage who mot'ed it put a dent in the roof and bent the boot floor as they put the spare back in and did it up way to tight (asses :dapprove: ) i didnt notice for 1 day so the garage would not accept responsability so i had to pay for it after paying £1700.00 for an mot....

2. Someone thought it would be funny to steal my ripspeed sliver window wipers but rather than cliping them off ( like an intelligent person) they snaped them off and creased the bonnet and dented it and broke the wiper motor... (i then had to pay for this to be fixed..)

3. A girl (no offence to any girls :rasp: ) in another car crashed into the back of me whilst i was stationary at a junction... Claimed off her insurance and the car had a full new scropion exhaust system, a new back bumper the boot floor sorted and a respray at the back end....

4. Got the car back all good had it back 2 weeks hadnt even had a chance to wash it.... went to tesco got some shopping went home and the next morning noticed that the whole back bumper down 1 side was strached and needed a full respaire again as someone had hit it with a car or tolley or something...

Now as you can imagine by this point i wanted to kill anyone who came within a meter of my car and was getting to the point where i really couldnt give a s**t anymore as no matter what i did someone else would mess it all up for me... :S

Sooooooooo after six long years 120 thousand miles and 16.5 thousand pounds i traded in my pride and joy for £1200 and i only got that as it was the min part ex.. LOL :quiet: but i traded it in for a Clio 172 2002 with 41 thousand miles on the clock and a full service history and warranty and all for 6.5k from a GOOD garage.... now i spent more than that on the saxo in the those six years on repairs let alone the moding costs.... but we all learn and i have... :D but i dont care cos i love my clio and it loves me.... LOL :clown:

and 1 thing i will say for the 172 if i dont put my foot down MPG is better than the saxo and everytime i do put my foot down the smile lasts longer than most of the dots in the rear view mirror... :rasp:

I would just like to point out a common misconception regarding modified cars and insurance. There seemes to be an opinion out there, That if you bodykit a 1.2, it becomes a V6 to insurance companies. I talk first hand and can say this is a load of b****cks. IF you just add mods to your existing policy, who do not know anything about the car, you are going to get raped, but If you spend a good few hours sorting out what you want and what you have done with an Independant broker, you will find there is very little increase in premium. Mine went from standard to fully kitted etc etc, all declared (even declared stuff like silver vision bulbs, Painted engine cover etc etc etc) my insurance went up £60 a year from who I was with! Admitedly, I told them I would only be doing 7k a year instead of 10k a year, But it still only went up £60.

Fact is, IF you are honest with them, take the time to shop around and go through you modifications, what you use the car for etc etc They do not look at astetically modified cars as bad as people think. I read it every day on barry boys " for what he has done to that 1.2, his insurance with mods declared is going ot be more than a 2.0" is complete and utter b****cks. If you are with a main insurance company, who's niche market are 40 year olds with a 1.4 escort, YES as soon as you tell them you have put a bodykit and 80" wheels on your car, your premium will rocket up, but this dont have to be the case, change to an independant spoecialist and your quote qill go down dramatically. I understand that the common misconception by insurance companies is that people who modify cars are twatty young drivers who deserve a huge premium, But there are companies out there (*check the back of Redline magazine etc) who realise that i nfact, people who modify their car an awful lot, care about it an awful lot, therefore are a careful nd respectful than someone with a satndard car?

I garentee i used to treat my "chavved up" 1.2 Clio better than 99% of other people treat their 1.2 Clios. That car was my life, and specialist insurance companies see this, and give you a reflecting quote.

  An orange one
i had a saxo VTR first car, got it back in 2002 for £5500 on a T plate, i then spent £17000 on modifying it over 3 years, got a cover feature and a second feature...sold it..for £5500... lost...£17000...

lesson learnt..big time.. 4 years later ive bought a V6 255..and only thing im changing is the seats to 182 recaro's

its something every young lad wants to do once...(i also just went a little extreme though the car wasnt a daily driver so body mods stayed mint)

My dad told me and better told me it was a waste of money..he was right..but at the time..the car modifying scene made me lots of mates who i still have today and are ultra close!

Ive spent a good few grand on my 172 now + the cost of the car. Ive spent countless man hours lovingly resurfacing my engine components, polishing the whole thing, Ive bought the best aftermarket products. Cared for it, polished it and loved it beyond belief.

Now Ive watched the local chav childred slowly destroying my car. It was the nicest car in the street and I think thats why its been targeted by these DSS loving freaks. They litterally attack it for kicks and wait for me to come out to shout at them. They kick foot balls into it, run into it and constantly play around it. Ive had bins knocked into it, bikes, scooters and toys smashed into it.

Due to my efforts to protect my car from these demonised little thugs Ive been physicly assaulted on my door step by one of the kids fathers who actually knocked me out and left me having convulsions on the floor choking on my own blood. Im being threatened by another. One of the kids mothers has kicked my rear querter pannel and scratch up my paint work.

Ive lost all interest in my car now. I guess this wouldn't have happened if it had been a battered ford focus and I would have saved a lot of money by not modifying it... I just cant be bothered now, I drive it when needed and give up trying to have something nice and special and modified.

Reading that makes me angry...there's always some pricks out there who are intent of ruining what fun/nice objects other people have.

I'd definately move...and then pop back to 'visit' the guy who lamped you:)

I am moving guys, Im presently waiting to hear if Ive got the new house but it all takes time.

I think there's an ever growning divide in this country between normal people and these social degenerates who have no interest in working or leading useful lives. They just breed and suck up our taxes...

It just goes to show you can work hard, try and have something nice and then some one who's only effort in life is to sign on once a fortnight can just destroy it. Im glad I didn't go all out on this car, I was planning on doing a lot more work to it and spending thousands more. I guess my point is the more you make something stand out from the rest you could be shooting yourself in the foot as the same time...

Sounds like the street needs petrol bombing once you move out. I hate tossers like that. Why cant people leave others property alone :(

When you move id definately go back and kick that guys ass, hate it when some social reprobate ruins others most loved possesions and then have the cheek to have a go when you react to it.
Id mostly be punching him in the eye.......

Thats a very good modest story

You have to do something like that to make you realise what a fool you have been. I have done it and most other car enthusiasts have done it and you look back and think ..."Christ i could have bought a brand new sports car and insured it for the money ive put into my car", but an overdose of enthusiasm has driven you into debt and its to late. Its called growing up and its all part of the experience.

But then i look back and say.... "ive just sold a clio that i spent £10k on for £3500 so ive lost £6500" - im 32 mate and im still doing daft s**t like that. If its your hobby its ok - its a thing that gets you through life, it stops you being bored and gives you enjoyment.

Not much comfort to you; but feel safe in the knowledge you are a better human being who wants to get on with life and enjoy what you've worked hard for. Those people who cause you greif are immensly jelouse that you can do this and no doubt they'll spend their whole lives feeling bitter about their place in life, which ironically, is of their own making.

Just an update:

I have changed Totally! I used to get excited that the summer was coming, as this meant CAR SHOWS!!!

I didn't go Donny this year, To be honest, couldn't be arsed. I looked at the photos from it and i just thought whats the point in doing that!!

I've sold my clio for an undisclosed amount (read as huge loss) And I'm glad to see the back of it!

I see modified cars on the road, and a few years ago I'd have thought, That looks SICK!!!! Now I think thats pointless!!!

I'm still a bit of a chav, I still lovethe low, big rimmed look, I'm going to look at getting something like this, Still modified but:

19''%20platinum%20silver%20jordan%20astra%20cab.jpg

Not to your tastes I guess, And not all that fast (I can't insure a turbo so its gotta be a 2.2 16v, But I love em!

Fact is, 2 years ago Before I started modifying the Clio, I could have afforded one of this, with the wheels and the coilies and the insurance!

I'd have been 18 years old, with a 3 year old 2.2 16v Convertable, with wheels bigger than my age is in years! ALL paid for with MY money :(

Oh well!

All I'm saying is, bodykits are cool at one point, but you WILL grow out of it!!

  Mustang, S13, AX GT
^On the plus side the coupes are very cool and decently priced, I was looking at 1 before. The money you lose modifying is like any other hobbie, you just notice the loss more as its all lump sums.

  Clio 1.2
You only live once spend the money while you have. If you enjoy doing up your 1.2 clio then weres the problem in thats. So whats if its not fast you cant to fast on the roads now adays anyway

  MK2 PH2 & E46 330
you could never be more right about anything. Im not planning on doing much to my RT. its already lowered, 15 inch alloys and an exhaust. nothing dramatic will happen to it.

i can tell in 2 years ill want something else because ill be bored of it lol. my mate has a 1.3 fiesta with a bodykit. hes spent a grand on it, which isnt bad considering what hes done to it. but now he wants a change... and he wont sell his fiesta for much at all!

  Clio 1.2
yeh all ive done to my 1.2 is new exhust lexus light alloys. but everything else like speakers and stuff will all come out when i get a new car so im not loosing much money really. And quick question bucket seats will fit all cars right so if i bought sum they would fit into any car?

great post there....i have to say i like your clio but i deffinatly know where your coming from....i have a 3k loan to pay off from modding all my previous cars and buying new ones after f**king them up. i wish i'd just saved my pennys...from my calculations i should have roughly £7000 by now...gutting....
