What you use to polish the car.

  Shhh

Was going to polish the car, and looked under the sink and i had nothing. Needs a good polish to maybe remove some of the scratches.

I went to halfords looking at products and worked out that maybe MER is the best, but what do i use to wash and polish it. I got told sponges are poo..

What i use to wash it.?

What i use to dry it.?

What cloths are best to add / remove the polish.?

Many thanks..

lol great another of these threads, i supose we ahvent had one for about a month or so....prolyl cus its winter tho.

You havent been on here very long so will let you off.

Long story short use anythign you want mate, lots of differnt people use different thigns and they al think its the best thing since sliced bread, buy something that looks good and see how you get on, if its sh*tye try sommet else.

  Shhh

Well i thought MER was the best as its the most expensive and been about since i was a kid...i remember the sunday morning markets where the MER demos were being done.

How about cloths.? MER can be applied wet..so then i dont need to dry it.?

Persoanlly i use turtle wax extreme, becasue it was all i could pick up before TRAX, apply with a sponge applicator...one is provided wiht the paste, and just buff off wiht a soft cloth

Everyone has their own preferences when it comes to car shampoo and waxes.

Instead of a sponge, i reccomend the Meguiars lambswool wash mit. Really soft and will not scratch paint. It just needs to be soaked after each use. Really good when giviing the car a good coating of shampoo.

its the most expensive in halfords there are loads of others out there some cost a lot more than you would believe!

search for mothers, mequires, zymol on google and you will amazed at what you can find

AS FM says G3 the scratches then just use a wax on a new car polishes with cut (like mer) arnt neccessary on new paint

G3 sounds a bit serious I would try some off the products off http://www.meguiars.co.ukwww.meguiars.co.uk

I would use a lambswool or ultimate mitt to wash the car

I would apply a body scrub to remove fine swirl marks and maybe scartch x

I would then use NXT wax to make it shine!

I know Ive used it on my cup but i then had to go over with a less harsh polish to bring the shine back lol!

Totally agree.

Lambwool mit, 2 buckets, any decent car shampoo, dry with microfibre towel, apply wax with sponge applicator, buff with ultimate wipe.

Shampoo, polish, wax all dependant on what you want to spend, but for my 2 pence worth, i dont see the point in spending ££££££ for your car then skimping (sp) on keeping it looking good IMO.

BTW just washed and waxed mine with NXT.

Brazo, you the same one on the Megs forum?

Got some good advice off there re. products, how to apply etc.

If your really into cleaning try www.tyresmoke.net, all forums/cleaning.

There are some serious detailers on there.

depending on your skill level, to get rid of bad scratches g6 followed by g3 then g10 will give the best results, when ever i use g3 i always finish with g10 its a much finer polish and gives just a bit of a more finished look, then on with a hand glaze and then a good quality wax i personnally use swissol and love it, but 100 quid for a basic kit and 300 for a good kit...

oh and if your paints reeeeeeeeeeaaaaaly bad the good old 2000 grit wet dry sandpaper comes out..... people get worried when u use sandpaper on there paint :D

Hehehe the setting fire to the paintwork trick eh? I remember that one

Try Meguiars/Zymol/Swissol etc - much better results than the Mer/Autoglym type products IMO

Also invest in a lambswool mit as mentioned above - sponges are like sandpaper on the paint

And use 2 buckets of water - one for shampoo and another with plain water to rinse the mit

I was at the car was and i thought that the standard of wash was not up to the achieved level. I thought about spending the afternoon polishing the car to look after it, then thought about what i could use. The sponges were out as per the other thread, but i had no idea what to use.

The car should be looked at by the paintshop to get it up to scratch, then i wanted to work it so it looked good during the summer etc. The only thing decent halford and motorworld stocked was the autoglyn and the Mer items. I thought that these would be the best options, but i wondered what the garages used.?

Then the option of what to use, cloths, mits, scrapers etc. Then what about specialist parts, like the front grill, and black in-fills on the rear bumper. So many cars (not 182) with the black bumpers coloured with polish stains, then you have to back to black it etc..

I can honestly say ive never polished any car i have owned in the past, i always took them to the car wash, or the jet wash, but after washing the clio this morning by jetwash it was still dirty and required extra attention and another wash. I cant use the carwash as it may remove the stickers from off the doors...and i dont want that...

The garages use cheap generic autoglym and auto smart products mainly and rarely wax any car

lol

Youre not wrong. I spent over 3 hours just doing my roof with the clay bar and three-stage and that was a rush job as it was starting to go too cold! On the plus side, it still beads fairly well after a couple of months of leaving it under trees and avoiding washing it because its cold! lol

er i can get zymol of my car at any time of the year without smears ??????, you must be talking about the cheap halfords zymol stuff again, im talking about there speciality waxes

  106 GTi

Any good carnuba wax should wipe off okay at this time off year if its not too damp and cold out. Good pure Carnuba waxes like P21s, Meguiars #16, Poorboys, so at a guess Zymol too ( not brought any for years as there is as good for alot less £££) are great as there is no cure time wipe on, buff off. Products that need time to cure for 15 - 30 mines such as sealants ie NXT or Autoglym extra gloss can be a pain as by the time they have cured they have got damp and are a pain to buff off.
