Track oil temps

I have an oil temp guage, albeit a quite cheap Spitfire analogue one, into a sandwich plate at the oil filter. I did a track day on Sunday and was getting temps ~120'C+, which surprised me, but I really don't know if that's normal or dangerous? What temps do you see?

I used a cheap oil temp gauge on mine, had it showing 120+ a few times. It used to start to tick a bit while that hot and also if you pull the dipstick out the oil would run off it like water. I have now upgraded to a 15w 40 oil and a mocal thermostat operated 10 row oil cooler, temps have now peaked at 90 degrees. Also note that it does take longer for the oil to be warm enough for the vvt-i to operate.

Use a fully syn oil like Silkolene pro it will take 120+ all day long
Or any ester based fully syn
They maybe expensive but ester based oils are made to take very high temps
