Top end engine rattle (vid inside)

Could do with some trained ears, I realise its hard to diagnose unless stripping the engine or hearing it in person, basically I thought this clacking type noise in the video below was the water pump bearing failing and after the pump and a new Aux kit was fitted the noise still existed. It will be taken to a specialist asap, Im working at the moment and its a bad time due to tax, MOT due now and insurance next month.

The car drives fine but I'm avoiding driving it now.

Both cam belt kit, aux kit and dephaser where changed a year and a half ago. Can anyone suggest what they think the noise could be? I will take it to a specialist I know of when I have some money set aside, I'd just like to know what needs changing so I can estimate how much this will cost me.

The aux belt was also taken off and the engine ran shortly which showed the noise still being there, so it ruled out any of the pulleys.

Dephaser going again? even after being changed? cams damaged? Seeing as the gearbox diff bearings need changing as well as this Im weighing up my options.

Its quiet from cold, you can hear the tappy clacking noise after 5 seconds on the video.

Spark plugs where checked, It does sound like a normal engine in that video, its hearing the other noise that is the problem, heres another video, on the road no surfaces for the noise to bounce off it sounds ok, when Im parked next to cars its noticeable.

cambelt has been tensioned incorrectly and the random metalic tap noise you can hear is the tensioner hitting its stop

thankyou please

Its because i'm Irish ;) the best bit is about 50% of the clio 200's i see that are still under warranty do this FROM FACTORY and Renault dealerships admit there is a noise but haven't got a clue what the noise is! I'VE TOLD THEM the problem but they won't listen, I spent the day with the main technical engineer from gates who i highlighted the issue to, amazing that little old me had to approach the people who make the sodding belt for Renault

Its a fitting problem rather than a part problem, you just need to know what you're doing, we run them up to temp now with the covers off (meganes/197's only) if it taps then it gets adjusted a touch

Just listened to the video Fred, hats off to you, that is the noise I have. I didn't just use a back street garage, I used a a specialist, when I had someone off here listen they said they could hear the belt rubbing slightly.

So how bad is this ? Obviously it will need sorting ASAP, will the belt fail or will the tensioner just make noise ?

Was on my phone last night, had a listen of the videos in the thread linked and they are definitely the same sounds, what does hitting its stop mean ?

This will be a LONG reply, i'll type it up for you, or i can just e-mail you the report i did for Renault/gates

how the tensioner should look when fitted

but it can be fitted thus

note the notch/arrow on the tensioner both line up in both pics, lower image is the wrong way to do it

I see, so if mine is anything like the 2nd pic its incorrectly tensioned and hitting its stop.

What is this stop? is it just making noise or is is doing any harm?

I cant do anything about it being sunday, but In the week Ill phone the garage who did the belts and see if they are willing to rectify the problem.

i'll take some pics on monday of the back of a tensioner so you can see what i'm banging on about, the ratio between the front side and the back is huge, if you move the tensioner 1mm on the front it equates to about 5mm on the rear hence why its so important to get the tensioner **** on

And that is why people drive out of their way to let you have a look at their cars. Like a Clio Sport god ;)
