Soon going to be buying a 182...

  Iceburg silver 172
Hi all,

im going to be buying a 182 within 2 months time max, as i can now finally get cheap enough insurance (just turned 19). Just asking a few questions to see what to look at..

with my budget im probably looking at getting one with between 60k and 85k miles. how long do they go for? and i take it dephaser, and belts should have all been done by now?

is there anything else i should check for?

im new to the forum so sorry if this is in the wrong place or whatever.

thanks in advance

Most 182's in a normal service plan won't have had the 2nd lot of belts done yet - they'd be due next year generally (05's being done every 5 years = 2015 for their 2nd cambelt), so finding one that has had them done maybe harder. In that sense, if it hasn't been done, as long as you factor in the cost of it, it's no biggie.

I know this will sound a bit silly, but my 04 clio has the belts done 20k ago at 70 thousand, in 2012, I am assuming they are ok for another couple of years, depending on the mileage?

Sorry not hijacking the thread, you will love your 182 when you get...;)

Cambelt is 72k or 5 years iirc, and Aux is 36k or 3 years (some say 5). So yep, good for a while!

A good thing to check - usual crash damage on the front would mean the black inserts on the bumpers at the top are usually taken off/sprayed over - so check those are still there :)

Here's a quick example:

every 5 years - Cambelts. Factor about £900 for that.

I think you've been quoted in Euros? :rasp:

But seriously the cambelt is a MUST. Just because it should have been done by now doesn't mean it has. It's also very tempting to say you're more likely to get a strong engine if you buy one that hasn't been done, then get it done properly by a well known specialist (rather than one done by any old garage)

Renault state in the service book that oil changes are needed every 12k or 2 years (whichever comes sooner). Most people change the oil every 6k though.

Its certainly going to be a big step up from a 1.4 corsa performance wise so you have done well to find insurance on one at 19 :)

Personally having owned a few of these cars over a period of years and having built quite a few performance engines for them, I would say that people's obsession with mileage is misplaced, I'd happily buy a well looked after high miles cars with decent service history in preference to a lower miles one thats a lot dearer or has shady service history.

There are two belts, Aux and Cambelt, cambelt is 5 years / 72k miles (whichever comes first) and is an expensive job and one best done by a specialist as small timing differences tend to effect performance and as its a fiddly job its uncommon for a non specialist garage to actually get it exactly right, its different to other cars in this respect.
Aux belt isnt really a big deal, much cheaper on labour and any competent mechanic can easily do it, thats every 3 years or 36k

is there anything else i should check for?

Not really anything specific to the marque, just general stuff like crash damage or poor maintainance, on the whole they are very reliable little cars so long as they are well looked after.

Welcome aboard.

Its a good place for inspiration and to meet fellow owners, its a bad place for your wallet though as you'll get tempted into modifying your car if you read everyones project threads, lol.

Ouch, more or less the same as the cost of the car then, lol

Insurance is a bugger fullstop.

I've just come from an Audi A3 2.0FSI which was costing me just over £1000 to insure and have been doing quotes for 1*2's and they aren't much cheaper.

I'm 22, wrote a car off in my first year of driving, now have 2 years no claims and 3 points.

i couldnt afford to go on my own insurance at 17 on a little 1.2 clio so i was an 'additional driver' on my mums policy ;), only had my own insurance for coming up to a year so have only the one year no claims

As everyone says, insurance is the biggest part of it all... make sure the exhaust is in a good condition, the standard ones just rott and will most likely set you back £400... or £800 if you want another renault standard exhaust... and even if the car comes with a 3 month warranty, I found out exhuats, tyres and brakes arent ccovered :) also, dont be out off by a 182 because the clutch doesnt feel roght. They have a tendency to be really stiff and the biting point is quite high on them, so dont always assume the clutch has worn out :) whenever you have you 182, enjoy it :)

Good good, will prohably sound better as well ;) when your first drive the car, at low rpms the car might not seem all what its cracked up to be... its will still feel alright, but maybe not as you thought, that will be because you need to let the rpms build to 5000rpm to feel the kick of the engine then you will be giggling like a little girl ;)

If you get a decent remap (Rs Tuning/MWM/SJM for example) you will find the power comes in a bit sooner, in fact even an RS Tuner device that allows you to upload a map yourself will help to really help improve the lack of torque from 4-5Krpm where the standard map is too lean as its still in closed loop control.

do you know how much would that would roughly cost?

You can pick up a second-hand RSTuner for £90-110 (and sell it on for the same price), but you need to pay for Unlocking the device (per car, around 48 euro), and then pay for the map (i think it was around 40 euro or something).

Itll cost maybe £80-100, or less if you can find someone who can sell you the maps cheaper, or if it comes with the maps.

Addicted Without going off topic too much, is there any advantages of going to say RS Tuning in Leeds and getting it mapped as apposed to mapping via an RS Tuner?

  182/RS2/ Turbo/Mk1
Probably if you had more stuff done to it, but I doubt you'd feel the benefit on a stock/near stock 1*2, @Chip-mk1 would probably better answer that though!

Thats a good enough answer for me mate.

The RS Tuner is close enough on a standard car (with a better exhaust) generally that there really isnt much value in bothering to pay the extra for a "custom" map.

Ie, 100 quid to solve the sub 5K hole is money well spent, another couple hundred on top to try and chase down just a couple of bhp isnt really.

Secondhand ones seems to be priced a bit mentally, you can buy new for only about 160 quid, which often works out cheaper than buying secondhand and then buying a license and map!
