My Dyno Results !

  BMW M3
Been up to Star Performance in Fife to get a power run done for my clio. Was pretty surprised by the bhp results so i asked him about the accuracy of their rolling road. Apparently, its one of the best in the country and alot of 182s they have had on there didnt even reach 180 bhp so im pretty optimistic.

Well, results are : 201 bhp & 151 lbf-ft. TBH, im still sceptical about the bhp as i thought you needed at least cams to get to 200, but never mind.

Guy said it was a very good showing from my clio and said "they go like go-karts dont they" lol

Here is a scan of the results and a few pics of the clio when i got home. Only phone pics though.

Opinions welcome.

Forgot to mention, mods are: RSTuning Remap, Inlet Mani match, ITG Panel Filter, Janspeed Exhaust and sports cat.

wicked mate put it does appear you are loosing alot of power when you get it down to the wheels ????

  RB 182 with CUP packs
58bhp transmission loss? Thats a 29% loss?!?!

Sorry mate, I'd pay attention to the wheel figure which seems on par with most 182 results I've seen.

  BMW M3
Im not really up to scratch with what transmission loss should be. Dont know what % is normal.

As long as the results dont show anything wrong.... any way to reduce transmission loss ?

  RB 182 with CUP packs
Around 18% I'd of said tbh.

As you said as long as the car is running nicely the figures make no difference imo.

  Turbos.
15% is typical for FWD.

Pointless really unless you done a before mods run... and even then it should of been the same day.

No doubt it would of made you feel better about your car so objective achieved in any case!

  Nippy white cup
Aye the wheel figure looks low but the fly is way too high. I could be wrong but I'm sure I have heard of high readings from Star Performance before :(

Yeah, as you say. Getting just one set of results doesnt prove much.

The reason i went in was mainly to check that a hissing noise i hear when flooring it, its loosing me power.

The guys checked all over and said it isnt the exhaust, but sounds like and air flow noise after the matched inlet. Said it isnt losing power from that.

As you say, BHP does sound high, but the bloke said its a very accurate dyno. Maybe it does read out high ? Dont know, either way im still quite happy.

For your interest, my tuned hybrid made 152 atw which is 185 @ the fly.

Thats about what we would expect on our Dyno Dynamics dyno. You usually find Sun Maha units because of the "coast down method applied to determine transmission losses overstate estimated flywheel by around 5%.

So 143 ATW here would be around 168 flywheel [ATW/0.82 = ATF]

This ties up exactly with Tom16v's car

Ali was gutted with Star performances figure for his car at 182 or so (it's a 172 mind...)

SOmeone got 186brake for a standard 182 the same day and mine got 179.5 brake the same day with more mileage on it.

Pinch of salt me thinks.

I think dyno are only good for a rough indcation imo of where the engine is at. Torque seems low considering the mods, thought 182's are 148 lb/ft as standard.

  BMW M3
Yeah, thought the same about the torque. I noticed a big drop when i fitted a sports cat so might put std back on.

  206 GTI 180 & 106 GTI
The wheels figure will appear low as they use 2 rollers therefore 2 points of contact with the tyre unlike the road which only has one - same set up as powerstation and the results look very good.

I always thought it was 400 cell. The sportscat is 120 anyway and i notice a lower amount of torque with it straight away. Might give more bhp though.

Another formula that's bounded about for working out fly figures from the wheels is (atw + 10)/.9.

As said the graphs are good when used in comparison for before and after results. Take the figures with a pinch of salt and look at the shapes of the graphs :)

Thats only if the rolling road uses a single roller to measure.

I reckon RR results are a bit hit or miss but Star Performance's is one of the best Rolling Road units in the country.

Lots of goodies to be had if you are a german car fan with them being one of the UK's biggest VW and Audi specialists, they were the first in the Uk to tune an Audi rs-6 and also got a porsche cayenne turbo to 515bhp.

The owner of Star was the one doing the RR when we were through and he says its a pissing contest at the end of the day. he doesnt do rolling roads if he can avoid it, he uses it as a tool to do a before and after comparison to gauge the mods he's doing to a car on the day.

cool mate
same mods as me but no sports cat ,rs remap + angelworks inlet + janspeed need to get mine on the rollers soon . o got kn not itg filter thinking of getting one . getting about 29 after the map .

as everyone else has already said, wheel figure looks low for the mods and 60bhp increase from wheel reading to fly is utter nonsense... another RR loses credability... I'd RR it somewhere else for a more accurate gauge.

I had mine done recently(ish) and think that over reads, but hey, it sounds good when people ask lol

where did u go to have yours done matey? im looking for one around the north west and at the moment its looking like it will be nicks at hillpower!

there is this one down the road fom me which i havent checked out yet:

http://www.mikeanics.co.uk/rollingroad.htm

and this one, there is no detail of the rolling road at this place but when i went to see him he showed me it and said there are only a few of them in the uk cos they are so expensive but then he told me it would be 100quid per run so i told him where to go lol:

took mine to Ric Wood, he setup and mapped Matt A's Clio TT. He's s**t hot and knows his stuff, just think his rollers over read on my power output... maybe they didn't, but it was 240bhp exactly and 193lbs/ft torque.
He was fault finding on it cutting out, as normally I'd use Andy at GDI but I needed the car for work and Ric's only down the road from me. He RR'd it FOC as part of the diagnostics, so it made 206bhp when it went in, had a couple of faulty sensors replaced and basically made 30bhp more on the next run, which was fantastic.

The main thing is the curve and what it should look like, seen a fair few Clio's outputs and there's only a handful of RR's I'd trust 100%... one is RE Performance in Bury, however the RR ops are not that... how do I say... careful with your car. Few horror stories of them blowing up and skipping off the rollers... but the results are accurate imo.

Nick @ Hillpower's are usually on the money looking at them, I'd deffo consider that, don't use the mini sport place though in Lancs, they are f**king useless.

I dont get it, why use two then if the results are confusing and meaningless? One roller seems to be industry standard, anything else giving other results may not necessarily be wrong, but unless you can work it out it's meaningless... It's like having a speedo that reads only in KPH and having no idea or way of working out MPH... it's about as useful as a chocolate fire guard

makavelli, im at hill power dyno on sat wit RSC cost 33odd pounds thru them :)

im gutted cos i wanted to go to that but am working untill 2 so wudnt get across to nicks until 3ish :( the geezer on RSC said they will probably be goe by midday so i have had to give it a miss :(

Powerstation said it was down to creating the fly figure more acurately. I was told they said they had 3 engines ran on an engine Dyno at Prodrive then tested them in cars on the rollers and they where all ran bang on what the engine dyno said.

But has always confussed me as they at the wheels figure is the bit that counts!

yeah I'd say that's a load of toss personally, I dont get how one can be accurate and the other not? There's only a very small chance it made that fly figure, but the WHP one bears no relevance... so to me that would be meaningless tbh... unless his Clio is 4WD? lol

  Nippy white cup
A before and after is the only way imo...even if std it reads 30bhp more at least you can see how much of an increase you get. Mine was 182 on std ecu and no CAF....3 hours later it was 195bhp and 175ft/lb on same rollers on same day

Chris

exactly, that's the only real way to get a proper reading really. Like I said, don't expect mine to really be making 240bhp, but the before and after was 30bhp at the fly, also 47bhp up at 2500rpm

  BMW M3
Ok, i agree with all the comments about "its pointless without run previous to mods" I knew it would be anyway. Was just curious as to what it might get, whether it would create a talking point (like now) or whether it doesnt even make 180 lol.

But seeing as i dont know anything about what bhp curves should look like, is anyone able to say it looks ok ?

BTW, the Dyno was a 4wd version and had 4 individual rollers lol
