I dont know what to do - 197 to 200 - advise from long term 197 owners would be good.

In a bit of a whirl over what I should do.

I own a R27 clio - 2 and a half years old - with exactly 30k on the clock. Its in very good condition for its age but does have some significant damage on all of the alloys. The car is paid for - I traded in my cooper s and have paid the difference off.

Basically I love the car- it blows me away pretty much every time I drive it - I do quite a few miles and they are mainly on A roads and B roads so its the perfect size for me.

Having said that after test driving the new clio 200 I actually think its marginally better ..... I just can not get to grips with the looks of the thing - If I was to get one then it would have to be in white with the black trim and wheels as I think thats the only colour which makes the front look bearable.

The other option is to keep the car long term - how many miles do you think these 197 engines are good for without a load of hassle?

The dealer phoned me a couple of days ago saying they are desperate for r27s in black to sell second hand - they have offered me £10k for mine and a new 200 with recaros and cup pack for 19k on 4 year 0% finance.

Just dont know what to do - if I could buy a 200 that looked like a 197 I would do it tomorrow but just dont know if I can learn to love the new clio?

I would. The 200 I drove was awesome.

It's an ugly b*stard though. My ideal RS Clio would be a Nimbus R27 with a 200 Cup's chassis and drivetrain.

The only thing I question on my 197 is the gearbox, mine is the old style one which I'm guessing is the same as yours. It doesn't feel tight anymore and I get the occasional crunch, having said that it has done a fair few trackdays now. Other than that mine has been great :)

Ive had no problems with mine either ... but another 3 years warrante and a new car always appeals to me

I had a 197 for 2 years, and loved every minute of it. Both fantastic cars, but I feel the 200 is everything the 197 should've been.

The 200 is a superb bit of kit, it really is!

your trade in is not good on that as some1 on clio197 just got a trade in on a ff clio 200 with the same cars as your with 36k on it for 10.5k and the 200 at 18k i think...

but when i looked i was given 9k for my clio 197 with 34k on the clock in red with miltek and balck wheels etc no marks on it... (the dealer is a good mate)
and 14.5k for a ff clio 200 in storm grey with recaros etc only option not added was tom tom, if you live near aylsbury i would deff pop in

I upgraded for £6000 (cost of new car + interest - part ex) from the 197 to the 200.
It was definitely worthy of the cash , would I have done it for £9000???? Erm, probably not to be honest. Its a lot of money that mate for the same car that's no quicker but just easier to drive and more refined.

19k sounds a lot. I specced a black 200 up a couple of weeks ago (cup chassis, recaros, cornering lights, black speedlines, gt spoiler) and was about to do a deal at 18,350 with 0% 3 yrs finance. Couldn't justify the depreciation though so not done it!

I must be going mad as I am starting to like the look of the 200 :S. £9k is a lot of money to spend on a car that is only marginally better. Fact is that most drivers won't ever reach the limits of a 197 let alone a 200 so the choice is whether you want to spend the money on a new car or not.

Oh hi Storm Grey?

Re: I dont know what to do - 197 to 200 - advise from long term 197 owners would be g

Im not really upgrading just to get more performance (thats an addded bonus)...... im at that point where if I dont get the value out of my car now im going to be sticking with it for good. Warrante runs out in oct - its tempting to trade in now - will have lost just over 4k on the car in 3 years if I trade in now... I could maybe even sell private and get a little more- I like having a car under warrante that I know wont cost me anymore money - plus its always nice to get a new car.

Its just that I like this car enough that I might actually consider keeping it long term

I was quoted £19.3 for a clio 200 in glacier white with recaros and cup - now really happy that I bought my r27 for under 16k brand new and the new one is 3k more?

Quoted 19k with 4 years interest free

or I can get it for 18k if I pay for it up front with r27 as deposit

That was his first quote on the phone....

19.3 on 4 years interest free

or

18k if I pay in lump sum

Obviously I would be pushing for a better deal whichever way I decided to go.

Whats the best price people have bought new for---- I want recaros and cup pack...I assume sat nav is standard now? If not im not too bothered

Re: I dont know what to do - 197 to 200 - advise from long term 197 owners would be g

if your seriously tempted an dont mind travelling for a better deal then have a look on renault sport theirs dealers that will no doubt do you a better deal

you may find your getting very little discount on the car cause of the 0% finance being offered
more often then not the biggest discounts are for cash buyers

sat nav is an option on the rs

I really like the 200... I didn't at first but the looks wouldn't be an issue for me anymore.

£9k is a massive amount though. I probably wouldn't.

If you're worried about warranty / the R27 costing you big money why not look into a 3rd party warranty cover???

If you can get a better deal, which I'm sure you must be able to I'd just go for it. You only live once and it is nice getting a brand spanking new car!

A few people have done the swap over on 197.net, and from reading the reports none have been disappointed!

Per the question of how long would the 197 engine last, it will last aslong as its treated and cherished as supposed to.

Look at Fletchers and Russ's 172's, they are way up and above 100k and still going.

I really wouldnt bother swapping your 197 for a 200 when at this point you dont seem sure you actually like it?

Also, get a red or green 200 with black Speedlines, it looks tolerable in these colours atleast

Not for 9k. I had a 197 for 18months. I'm saving for a house, and it got to the point where it had done 40k. So i had to make the same choice in what to do. Keep it, as a 50k+ 197 would be worthless? or sell it whilst its still worth something? I sold it and bought a 172 Cup, banking the difference.

The only real difference i found with the 200 was the cupped quicker steering rack, and maybe a *little* better lower down. The outright pace is the same.

Personally I much prefer the R27. However I can see the attraction of getting a new car over a 2.5 year old one. Not for 19k though.

I'll be in a similar position in 6 month's time, but won't be buying a brand new 250!

I paid near the 18k mark but it's a brand new car to your exact spec don't know really all I would suggest if your getting a brand new one get most of the options you want if your spending that much cash get the lot!! Lol

The price they offered on your car is pretty good I'd say.

In fact, I think I got a bit fleeced by my dealer when I traded in my old R27 a while back compared to how prices have held up.

I had a red R27, 14k miles, 15 months old, and I got........ £11k back on trade-in.

Bear in mind this was back in 2008.... fair to say I got a crap deal. Or and I also got a terrible little RS Twingo as part of it. Bad times!

Re: I dont know what to do - 197 to 200 - advise from long term 197 owners would be g

To be honest, I was was with you until you mentioned the £19k figure

I was looking at an RS200 Cup at Chester Renault not very long ago. They were offering a brand new cup with no options for £13500 ish. How the hell does the price jump to £19k??

For £19k Id put a down payment on a low mileage Porsche Cayman S and pay £150/month for the next three years - a mate of mine has just done this.

I can't see why anyboy would pay the rude part of £20k for a Clio - as much as I love them. You can have a good Elise outright for that kind of money and the bloody things hold their value!

agreed- 19k is too much - if i could get it for 16k like the r27 i would do it tomorrow....... just started looking at piston heads ..... some good deals on lower milage r27's --- think im gonna hunt for the lowest milage liquid yellow r27 i can find.

I wouldn't want a porsche of a elise it's down to personal choice tbh options all add up yeah you could prob pick one up for that price with no options but as I said all down to personal choice!

Re: I dont know what to do - 197 to 200 - advise from long term 197 owners would be g

With no options is a pointless argument - who buys a brand new car, with a 4 month wait and doesn't spec it to their exact requirements? :S

Also those saying buy an elise, porsche etc etc...what about insurance, road tax, services, tyres etc? A clio is cheap to run/maintain in comparison.

Comparing the financial aspect of a brand new £20k Clio to the running costs of a Porsche is, quite frankly, laughable.

Re: I dont know what to do - 197 to 200 - advise from long term 197 owners would be g

Would not bother unless you want a brand new car, not enough difference to justify that price, i have a R27 and love it to bits, if i was you why dont you go for the R26, i have that too and you wont regret the step up, you can get second hand meg 250 for less than £20k at the mo and probably by the end of the year £18k will be the norm.

This is true ... .I realise I can buy quicker cars for 19k ..... but with the clio its the perfect size for me, about the right performance level for spirited everyday driving on b roads, its very reliable and the parts and servicing are pretty cheap compared to the cars that could actually beat it on a track.

Im now on the hunt for low milage r27s --- if anyone knows of one particularly in liquid yellow or white then please let me know...I could do a pretty quick sale and I am prepared to pay a good price for a low miler

Not quite £16k but worth a call to see what they can do :)

Re: I dont know what to do - 197 to 200 - advise from long term 197 owners would be g

My dealer has called me again with another option

They have a Racing Blue 200 cup with recaros and black speedlines with 2000 miles on the clock - its a sep 2009 car that has only been used with at weekends and they are offering it me for £14,995 .....so thats 10k for my car and 5k on interest free ...... tempting - just really not sure about racing blue on the 200
