how to brake in a rebuilt engine



  RS2'd Clio 182
Get my 182 turbo back tomorrow from having a full engine rebuild with meg pistons and head gasket supertech valves cat cam springs. My question is how to run the new engine in properly?

But don't labour the engine, use the gears/engine braking, don't sit at constant revs, don't be afraid to use some of the rev range but make sure the oil is up before doing so.

So you have effectively zero miles on an engine and it's going straight on the rollers for red-line power runs?

I'm not an expert... but having had an engine rebuild done in the past, it felt stupidly 'tight' and didn't want to rev, so I kept it under 4k rpm for the first 1000 miles or so until it had loosened up somewhat.

Ok, it wasn't done by a 'proper' engine builder so perhaps they come ready-to-rev straight out of the door?

I know that there is a school of thought that says giving it death straight from the off means things wear in quicker and it becomes a faster engine, but I have too much mechanical sympathy for that!

Mine went straight in the rollers and seems to make ok power! You'll need a mineral/break in oil which you can change once tuned. But as mentioned before probably best to follow your engine builders instructions.

I once drove an alfa 156 with the engine from a cup car fitted to Paris and back just to run it in.
changed oil on the side of the road, had a coffee and drove back.
It was the best running car for the first three races! (driver was crap though....)

So yeah i'm in the run it in first camp (if it will run safely on a standard map)
Don't some guys drive rebuilt turbo engines without turbo's for a bit tu run them in aswell?

Never heard of that mate, you can just get a running in map which won't run any boost.

You will have some sort of map to run the car which will be limited to 4K-5k rpm. Blast round for 500 or so miles, then go back to mapper for the proper map and oil as the oil your have in it from the start will be a mineral base to help with running in.
Obviously follow engine builds recommendations.

It's generally accepted that you shouldn't baby an engine when rebuilt. But don't red line it everywhere either.

Different builders tell you different things, maybe it depends on how they build the engines or something?
The guy who built my mates Golf engine just said "thrash the f**k out of it, don't worry".

He built engines and heads for Prodrive and F3 previously.

last time I rebuilt mine I used mineral oil for 100 miles or so and just drove it 'sympathetically' so no redline but not mothering it completely either, then changed the oil and thraped it.

cracked the block eventually but that was poor mapping and no sympathy on track, lol

Yep, but they're not likely to do big miles on the motor are they they're mainly interested in performance. If it was something you're planning on rebuilding again for the foreseeable then I'd not be thrashing the tits off of it straight away myself...

That site is horrible to read though.
Wikipedia has a pretty good article on it and also touches on why brand new modern cars don't really need it that much.

You can see why it's a controversial topic, it's almost a test of how well the engine was built.
If parts were accurately machined then put together there is minimal break-in required, as most stuff fits together perfectly.

If it was slapped together by some lazy tosbag it will need much more doing.

Stick some proper running in oil in it for the first 40/50 miles, Vary the revs and don't labour it.


Then kick its c**t in, Guaranteed to be a stronger engine

Just do what your engine builder recommends.
Going by the millers running in oil it says bed the engine in up to 500 miles.

Always got taught to run it upto temp, dump oil , change filter. Then run for 300-500 miles at verious loads ( not full throttle loading ) dump oil/ change filter , run after with proper spec oil and filter. Never had a problem. What usually kills rebuilt engines is labouring and no first oil change.

Was originally a Clioturbo conversion but the engine died after 9 months with the wrong spark plugs in. Now it's been fully rebuilt by a Renault Specialist near where I live called DDC
Same build as mine mate, ddc in donny have a good rep it should see you fine, have you got a boost solenoid for high boost low boost?
