for all those people who think changing the belts is too much like hard work then go for it, its your car and your money drive it till it snaps. if you are like the majority of people on this site who actually want to have a nice car maintain and look after it then follow the advice of the experts on this site.

Its actually easier to fit a secondhand engine than it is to change a cambelt properly.

that's why god invented specialist and warranty. whos to say the new (secondhand) engine isnt bolloxed? its common sense yes you can be lucky and go 100k miles at the end of the day its a material belt. age and mileage will all eventually cause failure. i did it for peace of mind on car that is 9 yrs old and done 60k and the belt was bolloxed. 1 day and £650 later i have a nice new belt with all the trimming. Time is money after all. renualt quoted me £600 just for a cambelt so i think £650 for a cambelt, aux belt dephaser pulley, new oil is more than worth it.

Thats your opinion and you're entitled to it. But don't knock other people for doing it differently.

I personally don't see the point in spending £650 on a 172 engine when you can buy one for £200.

Look at it like this; (hypethetically speaking)

I've owned a 172 for 10 years and will keep it forever. I've never had a cambelt change and today its gone pop. So I will buy a secondhand engine and get a specialist to fit new belts then i'll put it in my car. Total spend; £700 if i'm lucky. £900 if i'm not so.

You've owned your car 10 years and will keep it forever. You have had the belts changed once when you bought it for peace of mind, second time at 5 years and a third time at 10 years. Total spend; £1800.

Mine were done at 68k according to the previous owner but he had no proof, i ran the car for a while but i evetually gave in and got the belts done just for peace of mind...

Yes a second hand engine would have been cheaper, but ive got no one to fit the new cambelt etc and no one to do the transfer, so it was the best option just to go to renault!

However, if i was able to get another engine swapped over, then i would have done that :)

In my service book I have the belts down as done two years ago but no receipt just a stamp. It doesn't say whether its the whole lot of belts or just the main one. I'm going to leave it a few months then get them all done for peace of mind. My engine is on 36k and if I was to sell it saying it was on 36k but its got a second hand engine in it because I was a nonse and didn't want to service it would make it a struggle to sell.

The last car I had was looked after and everyone who knew me knew this. Before I even advertised it I had four offers from people I knew and sold it the day I got the Clio. Engine swaps are a sign of neglect unless its an intentional 'upgrade'.

People think if you go a day over 5years, or a mile over 72k the belt will snap. Do it when youre ready imo. they quote them figures to cover there ass, they give 3 years warranty but doesnt mean that once its 3 years old it will constantly go wrong.
As I've said before I hope your cambelt snaps and slaps you in the face.

In all fairness I've read the small print in the service manual and it does say ignore it all an do it whenever you are ready.

The amount of fail in this thread is epic.

Belt changes are half what they used to be.

Now to me and others in this thread, a snapped belt is not the end of thr world, as we either have the know how to change an engine or know people who can.

But for those who are less mechnanically minded, and especially those who use their cars for daily transport, missing a belt change for the sake of £400 is IMO idiotic.

In that situation, it will break, you will be left with no car, no way to get to work/girlfriends/AA anonomus meeting/CS meet etc, and left with a bill of having the car recovered somewhere, then the ballache of finding and delivering an engine, hoping it will work, then have to put a new belt kit on the new engine anyway.

As said, for some of us it's not a problem, but for the every day bloke, it needs to be done

P.s. jordi is a c**t

Jordi please stop giving advice, you haven't got a clue and this has been mentioned numerous times.

To the OP, simply they are overdue, wether you change them or not is your choice.

But tell yourself this, if it snapped how would you feel? What would you do?

End.
