Hi from Pickering

  Clio 172
Hi guys,

Just thought I'd put a quick post up introducing myself.

I'm a massive petrol head but my list of ex cars is pretty bland, mainly pick up trucks and small hatchbacks.. My current daily driver is an Izuzu Dmax but I have always wanted a 172 as a weekend car.

If you guys have any tips on what I should be looking out for and what I should do when I finally buy one that would be great

Thanks

Toble

Welcome!

Have you any preference of 172? Phase 1 or Phase 2? Would you prefer the lighter Cup or do you fancy more choice of colours and few more accessories?
Phase 2 preferably and definitely a cup!

Yeah deffo! I'm looking to get one sooner rather than later, do you recommend me looking at buying one off the forum marketplace??

Yes definatly have a look on the marketplace and see if the seller has a build thread which will hopefully be full of details about the car. Also any cars you do see post the reg or advert up on here as there's always a chance its known or been owned by someone here too.
The most important question you should ask about any car is when the cam belt was last changed. Its a big job that should include water pump, aux belt and dephaser pulley with the cam belt and is a job for a cliosport specialist ideally. It's not a cheap job, £600+ depending on garage and the cam belt is due every 72k OR 5 years. If it's not been done on time be sure to negotiate appropriately.

Ok brill, I've found a 172 but not a cup version on eBay for 1350 (https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https://www.ebay.co.uk/ulk/itm/264246314024)

Is that a good price for the mileage, I asked them about cam belt and apparently it was done at 65k

I'd have a look at what's for sale on here tbh.

You know what you're getting then.

According to the mot history that would have been around 2016 so a couple of years left on the belts. Price doesn't seem too bad for the mileage. Don't be too distracted by low mileage though, condition and history are more important than low miles. If it's local take it for a spin. I take it you know the difference between a regulator 172 and a cup?

No air con, no abs, no cruise, cloth seats, lighter.

Yep, lots of creature comforts removed. If your going to daily it it's something to consider.
No it'll just be a weekend car with maybe a couple track days. I live up in the north Yorkshire moors and so many decent A and B roads round here
