Long overdue update...

Back in November I went to my first drift day at Oulton Park. It was a properly sorted day, there were instructors on hand to help you improve throughout the day and the tracks were really good fun.

The car proved itself pretty well, to say the radiator still had a small leak it only overheated a couple of times the whole day, and nothing else went wrong :)

At the start of the day, one of the instructors drove it round the track and LOVED it! Honestly he had nothing but praise for it haha, and needless to say he set the bar pretty high after he effortlessly linked the whole track in a car he had never driven before :S

Anyway...pictures:

Overall I had an epic day, the car drove home fine although the next morning refused to start (making me miss the North West KK meet).
New starter motor on Monday morning and everything was dandy :)

After Oulton Park I didn't really touch the Volvo, just using it as a daily commuter to work.

Then the snow came  It goes without saying that it was immense fun in the snow, and that I was out sliding about at every opportunity lol.

About mid January I got sick of always worrying about my bodged radiator and finally replaced it.

Shitt picture but hey, everyones seen a radiator before.

Things start to get a little more interesting now...literally just a little bit lol

I decided to get my arse in gear and fit my front dampers that I bought back in October 2010. Relatively easy job as they were just inserts for the existing strut, so got that done and adjusted them to a pretty soft setting, and boy are they stiff! You can literally feel every bump in the road now :) Just how I wanted it!

Sorry but no pictures of me doing it as my camera battery was dead and couldn't really be bothered, but one s**t picture of the adjuster nut at the top lol.

The day after I was browsing Pistonheads and found some Recaros that were local and cheap. Went to look at them and bought them for a £100 :)
I was grinning from ear to ear and couldn't wait to fit them!

I used the existing seat rails and just re-drilled some holes as mounting points and that was it. I was expecting it to be a proper faff, but I managed to do it in 3 hours before work :approve:

I'm over the moon with them, I think they look great and they are so comfy and supportive compared to the old armchairs I had before

And finally... I've caught the stickerbomb bug

Im not going to go over the top don't worry, I just wanted to brighten things up a bit in the interior.

And put a couple more on the back window too.

And that brings me up to date!
I'm fairly happy with things now, but I'm seriously craving more lows!

Ideally I would like the arches to sit nearly flush with the tyres, but the front setup I have at the moment won't allow it, the struts are too long. There are a few people with coilover set ups on the forums which don't seem too expensive or difficult, so I'm researching the options at the moment.

C+C welcome
Greg.

Cool car

but god damn I hate this trend of putting stickers in the rear window at a diagonal angle. Just makes me think the car is owned by a t**t!

The seats are out of a Mitsubishi Colt, but before that they were in a Evo apparently. And I agree Rob, everything else for that price is either none branded or Rage lol. Chuffed to bits :)

I can assure you I'm not a t**t :rasp:

Cheers for the good comments though guys, just waiting on a reply about coilovers then I need to start saving :)

Coilovers = stupid lows
Coilovers + soon to be welded diff = very impractical car haha

I cannot wait

Cool! Good to see you're actually using it too!

Too right! But it definitely doesn't get abused doing streeto whenever it rains... ;)

Oh and I've got a reply on the coilovers... £400 + exchange for custom front coilovers. Specs say they should be 2.5" shorter overall than the standard setup.
Just asking a few more questions then probably order them :approve:

Thanks for good comments peeps.

Love this car. me and a friend of mine quite fancy something RWD for a bit of sideways action. think were going to go for an mx5 mk1 eunos. not going to be on the road though. just trailererd to track.

i fitted them yesterday, just haven't wound them down yet lol.

theres a couple of niggles i need to sort before im completely happy with them, for instance whether you need bearings inbetween the top mount and top of the coilover.
also i had to grind off about 1cm of top mount to get them on! haven't got a clue if thats safe or not but hey.

anyway i'll get some pictures up later.

My dad had one of these when I grew up, think it was a 340GL but it was MINT. Funnily enough the head gasket blew when we were on holiday in it and he had to replace it himself.

right update. mainly a rant/long story with a few s**te pictures:

Im annoyed because...ordered the coilovers about 1 and a half months ago from f1moto in Kent. he's a volvo specialist who's already built one of these as a drift weapon and is building another one for someone in jdm allstars this year.

I contacted him about the coilovers and he said £400 + VAT + exchange of my old struts. (worked out at £600) he said they'd be ready in 2 weeks. During the 2 weeks my MOT ran out and because of my old front suspension set up it wouldn't of passed (springs were loose in the cups) so i rang him and explained blah blah. he kept me waiting for a month because he was waiting on the springs from Gaz. Eventually he said I could have the coilovers off his 340 which hadn't yet been used...only fitted. I agreed because I was fed up of waiting.

This brings me up to date when they arrived on thursday. Obviously when i bought them I asked about fitting etc. and he said they would go on no problem at all. so come thursday I thought it would be an easy job fitting them, only to find out that my existing top mounts are massively too tall! And so I had no thread for my top nut to screw on to. I rang him and he said "oh yeah, really you need the custom camber adjustable top mounts to go with them to make them fit, but you can just grind down your old ones until they fit and that will be fine." So i said okay and started grinding. I ground them down as much as I dared and the thread only just managed to show enough for the nut to screw on. But then i realised that this was WITHOUT the bearing between the top of the coilover and the base of the top mount (my top mounts don't have integrated bearings) so obviously it'll rub metal on metal- not good.

SO basically they won't fit properly without buying the additional top mounts that he makes (cost £100). My argument/reason for annoyance is why the feck did he sell them knowing full well i needed different top mounts and told me other wise. And to make things worse, if it took a month and a half for the coilovers to come, how long will it take before i get the new top mounts?

So now I've got to wait till monday to ring him and talk to him :( very annoyed and fed up tbh!

Anyways picture of butchered top mount

Arnt the props/shafts/gearbox on these major weaksauce compared to the 440's? Looks savage regardless!

Also, a 1 1/2 month wait for coilovers is nothing. I waited 16 weeks for mine, and I know others on themgzr.co.uk have waited 17 and 20. If you're modding a car thats far from the norm it comes with the territory.

cheers chris!

Yeah sam the shafts etc. aren't the best but its only got a 1.4 in it so im not worried really.
And your right I know, especially when your asking for custom stuff like you said, but the thing that gets me is the fact i was initially told 2 weeks, and he never said "yeah its gonna be about a month now, sorry". he just kept saying "i'll get back to you next week" or "could be here any time" Just wish i had known so i could have bought a cheap runaround for the time being haha

little update...

After ranting for a few days I've calmed down and spoken to F1 Moto. So my new top mounts should be here by the weekend (fingers crossed).
This is what they should look like:
IMG_0087.jpg

On a different note, I got my exhaust back from the garage today after they've cut out the middle box and welded in a straight pipe. I've got a fair bit more underbody clearance now, but I'm unsure on the noise :S
It's just finding a rear silencer that sounds nice and that fits...

Anyway next update will be Monday probably after everythings all fitted :)

Cheers greg.

Can I just ask........

if the 1.8 F7P lump fits in, and you can get the F4R to go where the F7P goes.........

Can you not fit an F4R 172 Lump into this??
