Gearbox Rebuild Prices

Hi, how much do agency generally charge to rebuild the jc5?

My box crunches from 2nd to 3rd at high rpm.

I know you will say ring them but its a Sunday and I would like a rough idea.

Will the gbox have to be removed or can a 3rd gear syncro be put in while the box is on the car?

£350-£400 ish I think. A lot depends on how much needs replacing.

I Wouldn't take my word as gospel but I'm sure you're looking at £300ish for a rebuild

Gearbox has to be removed as well mate. The bolts that hold the casing halves together are in the bell housing.

Cheers guys, I bought a second hand box that was supposedly a good one but it isn't, its taking the fun out of driving it for me

I'll be booking it in at the end of the month, why didn't I do this the first time round.

No mate. 182 diff is bolted in rather than relying on the circlip that can fail, so the 182 diff is the more reliable option.

Mine cost £275 from agency transmissions. It was put on a pallet to be sent up the and back at £45 each way so £365 total cost.

I meant did he actually remove the box himself.

Mine was removed as I had the engine out to do belts and clutch change amongst other things. While this was happening, the gearbox was removed and sent up there for a refurb.

I wouldn't use Agency Transmissions after my experience last year with my R26 gearbox.

First issue I had was the gearbox was refitted and it was still damaged. That cost me £300 to remove/refit and £50 courier charge to send the gearbox off again. To be fair though he replaced the pinion shaft free of charge but after spending £750 on a refurb you expect it to be right first time.

Second issue was being charged for a missed collection because they closed early despite being told a courier was on it's way. I then decided to collect the gearbox myself as you can't trust them to be there for a courier and he refuses to arrange a courier for you.

Third issue was soon after getting the car back it started popping out of 6th gear and this has turned out to be a damaged gear which is costing another £600 for a new 6th gear.

So in summary the refurb has cost me just under £1800 which is roughly the price a main dealer quoted for a brand new gearbox!!

Missing the courier is pretty poor, but the rest is a non-issue?

The 6th gear issue happened on the first long drive I took and wasn't present before. Point really is they missed damage to pinion shaft and 6th gear which if noticed would have made the box uneconomical to repair.

I had mine rebuilt by a specialist, now I wish I'd gone to Agency Transmissions. I've heard some mixed reports about Agency, fair or otherwise. I either need to learn how to do it myself (I have a spare one for practice) or find somewhere with a solid reputation.

You need special tools as well mate to strip them.

I've got a guy locally who does mine, he's far from cheap, but he is the dogs kahuna's when comes to JC's.

Picked it up today at 11am after a 9am call
Can't rate him enough

Cost was 275
