Last part of my steering wheel assembly has arrived thanks to Volantech.
I asked for as discrete button panel as possible for the cruise control.
I’m not a fan of these if I’m 100% but I think it’s as least offensive as possible.

Haha, that’s what I keep telling myself mate. It’s just a daily.
I’m hoping to get some time on it over the Christmas break to fit up some new parts. I’ve got so much to do to it and no bloody time lol.
There’s still a completely new suspension setup, arms, ball joints, TCAs, brakes blah blah. lol.

Hoping to finally mock up the seat fixings too so I can get some proper mounts sorted for the 3 point belts.

Plus I’ve also got a slight notch in 5th gear which may be shifter, may be synchro. Gonna change that anyway I think.

What you ordering? I love goodies. 😅😁

Finally some more progress.

I had my original wheel trimmed by snappy about 8 years ago and it’s been superb.
However now I’ve decided to modify the car a little I decided the wheel wasn’t keeping with the theme I was aiming for.

So today I managed to get some time to get the Prototipo fitted. Not wanting to lose the cruise control feature, I’ve added a small Volantech panel too.
One of the things I never sold off the Impreza was the Works Bell Steering hub. This is a snap off item that also has a bolt on key lock. It was sitting in the garage so decided to add that too.
Undecided if I like it as close as this so far but I’ll wait till the Recaros are in to make a final choice.

Loving the wheel though, Momo wheels are just so lush to use.

So my Christmas update.

Since the rebuilt box went in, I’ve had an intermittent notchy engagement of 5th gear. I couldn’t decide if this was due to the PMS linkage not setup correctly or if the synchro was fucked?
All synchros and bearings were renewed so seemed odd to me. Had a chat about it with Alex at AWM and we hatched a plan to investigate.
Long story short, the 5th gear synchro was new, but the selector gear was very worn indeed. These are NLA from Renault so Alex came to my rescue with a used item from a low mileage box. Subsequently with the minty new item fitted, no more crunch.

As I’ve been collecting parts to fit for ages and hadn’t had time to do any of it, I thought Christmas would be a good time to get some bits done. My main hitter that had been annoying me was sorting my bent sills out due to previous poor jacking.
So without going into too much detail, the skirts were removed, cleaned, all areas checked for corrosion, sills repaired, DEOX coated, Electrox coated and then sealed with paint before a final coating of Dynax UB. I had previously given the bent sills a tweek so the before photos aren’t actually how bad they were. This is annoying as during my first ownership of the car, these were flawless.
Still it’s all clean and protected now and should preserve the car for many years to come before I have to have it painted.
Also gave the underside mechanical bits a liberal coating of ACF50.

Lastly was a full brake overhaul, Brembo all round, cleaned and greased all sliders and a fluid change for some fresh RBF600.

I did buy new handbrake cable too but the Pagid ones do not fit the 182 so hard refitted the originals for now.

Thats a bugger mate i take it wrong ones?

Also have you been out to Abberton Reservoir for a Drive?.

Yeah Abberton is only up the road for me.

They’re the supposed correct part numbers everyone recommends for without issue.
I’ve put the OEM ones back on for now.

If you’re out Abberton way, let me know I’ll pop up. 🙂👍🏼

The OSR (long blue one) is still available.
The NSR is NLA.

Supposedly these are what people diy now, but they’re poor.

I had a nightmare with these. Pagid is a no go now...

In the end, went for genuine OSR and this for the NSR

Thanks to @Amos91 for the heads up on the Borg & Beck item for the NSR. I can confirm WZD is now wearing new handbrake cables and the Borg & Beck item is really decent quality for the money.

The only issue I found was the protective sheathing was in the wrong place to protect the cable from the axle eyelet. So I added some silicone hosing to protect it.
All fitted up with a Genuine OEM OSR cable and a liberal coat of ACF50.

Nice to get this job finished up and the brake overhaul completed. So have her a quick once over. 🙂

Also delivered was my 4x brand new genuine OEM Trophy centre caps from RPD, these were purchased as I’m planning a wheel colour change too.

Glad you got it fitted okay! I found its best to get it tight on 4 clicks or so to start with as the cables will stretch to 7-8 clicks.

I've left the adjustment as is for the time being and i'll let it settle then adjust it.
Just nice to get that job all done now and know that all the braking system is tip top. Just need to pull my finger out and get these bloody Recaros fitted :)

Small but satisfying job this morning. Since fitting the new steering wheel, particularly with the snap off hub, it places the wheel closer to the driver and as a result, a little higher than before. This is fine ordinarily, but as I will want it lower when I get the Pole Positions in. (Yes yes, I know I need to get them in)
I set about sorting some spacers to drop the steering column.
Just a 5mm spacer is more than enough time get the wheel much lower than before.
If you have an aftermarket wheel and also think it sits too high, I can highly recommend doing this. Takes about 5 minutes and makes a huge difference to the feel of the car.

So recently I had found the beginnings of some corrosion on a couple of areas of the car.
The worst of which was what I considered significant bubbling around the fuel door hinge.

Also some micro blisters were also starting to show where the rear bumper meets the steel arch and under the tailgate handle.

These were all barely visible but I could see some pinhead blisters starting to appear and decided I’d catch them early and not let them manifest into something more.

Annoyingly I didn’t get any “Before” images except for the fuel cap area. The hinge was worn too so I decided to get a whole new Genuine Renault unit and replace it.

While the rear bumper was off it was all treated inside and out with Waxoyl.
I’ll be adding further Dynax to it too, and some small padding to the contact points of the bumper to prevent reoccurrence.

Also had a little bit of an expensive week in addition to the paintwork in WZD.
Last weekend I found myself a few beers in a had a bid up on some brand new 2118s.

C6C28F90-6B4F-4628-96D7-488752489E9C.jpeg

I got them for a great price, but like all these things, they were about get a whole lot more expensive. Expensive because
I love the look of them but need to have be car sitting correctly to wear the little 15” wheels but don’t want to compromise on handling.

Therefore I started hunting for some decent quality dampers. Most out there I wasn’t convinced by, and as my car is almost 100% road car. I wanted dampers built to my spec that I could run big pistons and soft springs that would be compliant on the road but offer exceptional chassis control. I want the car to still be able to move about but ride bumps and undulations like a properly setup chassis should do.

Having done as much research as I could on the options available to me for the Clio 2 chassis I found myself looking more at the offerings from AST.
This was then followed by a considerable amount of time discussing spring rates and valving with Simon and Josh @ AST Suspension.

So have ordered a set of their 5100 coilovers specified by Josh Cook, of which are in build now and expected to be delivered at the end of Jan.

Remember Frayz, it’s just a daily, just a daily.... #facepalm

I dont think I've seen many that use AST's with road springs so this will be interesting.

In a good way of course.

Good stuff on the paintwork too mate.

People get hung up and convince themselves they need spine snapping suspension for a car to handle.
A fast circuit car doesn’t make a fast road car,and I get the impression many convince themselves that they will spend a life on circuit with the occasional road drive. In reality they spend a life on road with an occasional track day.
In my case the car is the later, as 90% of my driving will be on road. Bumpy, undulating roads with compressions, cambers, rises and falls. It’s why the Trophy makes such a good road car, and why the Cayman R is far better on road than a GT4.

Hopefully we can get some nice ride height, maintain wheel travel and keep it all controlled and compliant.
I hope. 😂😂😂
