First drive out in new clio BANG!! it doesnt work anymore

  PH2 172
just took my new aquired PH2 172 For a spin put my foot down pulling out, heard a horrible noise instantly no power and just a whining noise, whilst towing it home something fell off, so i now have a pulley wheel and belt thats not attached to the car, im no mechanic, but im presuming this is the timing belt etc:cry: atleast ive not paid for it yet

Sounds like bad news probably going to need a top end rebuild if either the aux belt or cambelt snapped/pulley broke apart. Sorry to hear that really unlucky!!

Ps how have you not paid for it?

  Range Rover Sport
Take it back to the person who 'recently' fitted the belts? Just read your rather large 'BIO'.

  PH2 172
welll pissed off mate :banghead:, been waiting for 8 week for the car to have this new engine put in, because the original engine had the timing messed up and it dropped a valve, now this 'new' engine was obviously a dud, so he's taking it back tomorrow and sending it back to the garage who supplied the engine, ive not paid for it because i got it off of a friend of a friend who gave it me till i get my tax rebate, bloody good job really :/
anyone selling a 172?? :p

  PH2 172
extremely lucky mate, i was absolutely devastated when it happened, tbh i dont know if i want it back now not with all the trouble its now had, definitely want a 1?2 though :) , oh im sorry Midnight was there a few too many words for you?

  Clio 172 Monaco blue
Aghh mate, that's awful and at least you hadn't paid for it and just wasn't meant to happen!

  clio 182 FF
Thats awful luck mate.

At least you haven't handed over any hard earned yet. You should just say to the guy that you will get it repaired and minus the repair bill (or at least a percentage of it) off the final price of the car.

  PH2 172
The bloke who im getting it off has been round today to see damage and its getting treated to a full new engine next week :) and may even be getting a Williams to use whilst its being fixed, happy days

Personally I'd want to know more about this " new " engine , where it's been sourced , has this one had the belts done , who by etc ......? 2 engines already gone titsup , sounds like this cars jinxed to me lol . Plenty for sale elsewhere , so if you haven't parted with any cash have a look around .

Been and dropped it off at the garage, the mechanic looked it over, just a quick check and says hopefully have it back one day this week, but he says hopefully if it hasn't done any damage, it'll just be a case of fitting the pulley again and re timing it, so finger crossed, the garage is a well known BMW specialist around our area so the guy should know what he's doing been doing it 30+ year, and I didn't get the Williams :( got a f**king bright yellow 1.6 megane old shape haha, gonna look cool as hell :|

its all well and good that he's a well known BMW mechanic but time these up wrong and its either game over/ lack of power leading to failure/all good and proper.

correct locking tools needed ( not the shite laser copies that bend )

You do know clios are made by Renault and not BMW ;)

what would a bmw trained mechanic with 30 + experience in the trade know about a cheap french car that encorporate a very basic variable valve timing set up eh? priceless.

....and your point is? he can do it, its not rocket sience to time one up.
the lack of know how on these engines suprises me every time. not even dealerships get it right 99% of the time.

(btw BMW have a very similar system on a few of their engines ;) )

Is this going to turn into another thread where members spout rubbish about clio sport traders being the only people in the world who can fit a belt?

The original engine dropped a valve, so they fitted a new* engine and didn't bother to renew the belt kits?

99% of mechanics know that timing tools are required, i have a tool box drawer full of labelled timing tools for vw engines, audi engines, merc engines, bmw engines so on so forth and all are genuine equipment. most other mechanics i know also have these tools, this is your bread and butter for your average tool cabinet. the only difference comes with those cowboys who think they can wing it with cheap copies of the timing tools and recon they've seen it all before, those are the ones who mess the timing up.

i always wondered where this obsession with 'specialists' comes from, but i'm certainly not out to try and change folks minds. if you want to pay over the market price for the same service that you could get for much cheaper then go ahead, at the end of the day it's all about trusting a workshop or mechanic to do the job correctly. if that's a specialist for you then that's fine :) just don't believe the hype that a renault sport specialist is somehow more equipped than someone working on all marques of cars when it comes to non routine maintenance. if they're professional, they'll follow the workshop manuals and use the correct technical data. not much to go wrong there!

Most specialists on here (I know, I checked) are cheaper for belt changes than the average garage.

My local garage (been using him around 10 years, trust him implicitly) just looks on autodata and charges £35 an hour for however many hours autodata says. Book time on a 172/182 for both belts and dephaser is what, 6/7 hours? That's £245 compared to £150 that Diamond Motors on here charge.

i could agree happily with what you just said, but i was more referring to the amount of people who go to renault themselves in terms of specialists and pay 700 thereabouts for the privilege. perhaps i should say dealers, instead of specialist although it's fair to say renault are specialists, apparently. ;)

if i could make it my lifes work to convince even just one person to go independant, instead of going to renault then i'd go out a happy chap.

ps, sorry for throwing this off subject slightly. sucks to hear about your bad luck, glad to see you've not paid for it yet. that's certainly the pot of gold at the end of your crap rainbow lol. don't let it put you off renault sport though :) there aren't many better cars out there trust me! i hope you get yourself a nice 172 soon dude, there are still plenty of mint examples out there for you to choose from :D

People go to renault? Crazy fools! Should go to garages in this order:

BTM
Other decent renault specialist
None renault specialist independent
Renault

It doesn't fill you full of confidence does it . He'd been waiting 8 weeks  for the car in the first place , to have the " new " engine fitted . It doesn't take 8 weeks to source another engine and have it fitted . He then gets the car and " bang " , that's the 2nd engine gone . I wonder who it was that didn't do the job correctly in the first place causing the 1st engine to fail ? Maybe the person who caused the 2nd engine to fail ?
Big Spence . Go look elsewhere mate . Because once you've paid your money , if you should have a problem again , who's to say they'll sort that problem out quite as readily . Your choice mate , but i now what i'd do .
