Im assuming its the timing...

Sent my car to my dads mate to have my cambelt changed as he has done a fair few in the past, and i just didnt have the time to do it myself..

Anyway.... been to collect it, started it up, didnt want to idle right, didnt want to rev very well, thought nothing of it since it hadnt been started for over a week.
Pulling away no power, struggled to move, misfireing quite badly, after a few seconds it was fine, come to a junction revs drop right down, to like 200RPM. Pulling away again no power for a few seconds then its fine, get home car cuts out when i stop, start up again no revs, again sorts itself out, but then the cat starts smelling :dead:

Took it for a good run out, seems down on power.. but iv been driving an evo and a 350z all day so that could be why  but the smell from the cat has gone, still doesnt idle that well, and when you hold it at about 1500RPM it misses and backfires slightly.

I dont have the time to check it atm and the guy has gone on holiday for 3 weeks :dapprove:

I need to car so going to have to use it as it is, probably going to kill it but i cant help that :dapprove:

If that makes no sense ignore it :dead:

going to put some petrol in and see what its like after that

Surely you're better off hiring a car in the meantime - will be far less cost than repairing the potential damage you're going to cause?

No idea what it is myself...good luck!

any damage i cause i can fix easily enough, but i dont think the timing is out enough to do any damage though, im going to have to use the landrover for now though, but the old man needs that too >.<

Also forgot to mention, theres a whine coming from the engine bay which to me sounds like the AUX belt or cambelt has to much tension on it?

Take it back man !!

That's not reet !!!!

He on holiday for 3 weeks now :(

I guess il have to spend next sunday stripping it out and doing it again. I might take it to a specialist then i know its done right, paying for the job to be done twice ftl.

Forgive me but why did you take it to your dads mate then?

Because he has done a few in the past with no problems.

What i should have added onto that is i know its done right rather than me making it worse

Has he done F4R's before? or just other engines?

Another vote for the timing being out. Sounds like all of the tell tale signs.

There's not a whole lot else that could be wrong if it still runs.

Why are you asking if the timing is out if you've got the tool to check in your tool box? It wouldn't take you long to check it ;)

How do you not have the time Mark? Surely you can just work out of hours/lunch break in the corner!

You do some weird things sometimes matey!

Ok i lied, i have the time, after work occasionally, but after the past few weeks iv had id rather not finish work then start working on my own car.

Might have a look at the weekend if im up to it, but tbh im happy with it just sitting outside gathering dust, im saving money that way

You work in the trade and wouldn't do one yourself... Really? When you say 'the trade' do you mean car salesman as I understand why you wouldn't do one yourself. I can't see why so many people get them wrong. I've done 2 now myself and got them both right. Get the timing tools and I can't see how you can get it wrong? btw i also 'work in the trade' I'm a mechanic and before I bought my clio I had never done one.

I'm a mechanic if I could get hold of the tools I'm might be tempted to have ago but what's the point of trying.to be a hero for the sake of a few quid I would rather pay a specialist to do it plus I never get time to do my car I'm always busy doing some one else's car

Fair enough mate, yeah if you can't get the tools then I wouldn't do it myself. However I have access to the tool:)

Infact when people take there car to the 'mechanic' that ends of f-ing it up. Can these people define 'mechanic'... Is a mechanic someone who take of a part and fits a new one, or someone who can diagnose a problem with a vehicle, check it all out then replace the correct part that is wrong, not give it a stab.
For example a misfire:
Would a mechanic replace the coil, leads and plugs, if all that was a needed was a multimeter and it was found number 3 lead had no continuity.

Taking your car to certain places is like going to a dentist with a bad knee, yes they have an idea of the body however they wouldn't be able to tell you how to fix it. As an RAC man I see alot of 'mechanics' and this is why I ask.
