electric window went bang

Driving home tonight and went to wind up my window only to hear a loud creak, not abnormal in its self, but the bang which followed was. Any ideas what this could be and do I risk using it until i investigate further?

Either the motor breaking, or the cable snapping, it's a very simple system under there, so changing anything should be cheap and easy

I like cheap and easy, when it comes to fixing cars that is.
