Clio 200 ticking sound...advice please

  Megane 265 Cup
Hi all,

Had my clio 200 about 3 weeks now and noticed a ticking sound from the engine when idling. My friend actually commented on it when he pulled up alongside me tonight so it must be pretty obvious. I just wondered if there is actually a problem or if this is normal sounding? The car is still in warranty until Aug 2013 I believe.

I have attached a video below, would appreciate some feedback or advice on whether this is the norm or I should be concerned.

The sound in the video seems a lot lounder on the computer than in real life as such, but there is a definite ticking sound...I am wondering what a 200 is meant to sound like?

Much better video from my camera here;

What do you think? Also is it just me or can you hear a sort of screeching sound @ 9-11 seconds and 24-28 seconds or so?

Thoughts?

I can hear the injecotrs ticking in the second video, also a very light rattle which could be the tensioner hitting the stops, I know Fred had pointed out this to Renault before.

Edit, as posted by Gorms.

That was the thread I started: http://www.cliosport.net/forum/showt...=clio+200+belt

Yours sounds exactly like mine did in the early stages, but it did eventually get louder. It also only did it when the engine was warm and at idle.

Take it back!!! Don't let them fob you off that it just needs an aux belt and tensioner, it'll just mean returning the car again so they can do the job properly.

In the end Renault said it was the waterpump. I agree with Fred's theory, and the fact that they changed the tensioner and the belt too + the noise has stopped!

I ended up being without my car for over a week because they had no loan car's and didn't want me driving mine as it was a 'possible' timing belt issue. Also, making me aware of this and it going pop would result in me having no come back.

Great fun :( mine makes the sound whether it is stone cold or at full operating temperature.

So you eventually got to the stage where they fixed it and the noise is totally gone? Any chance of posting a video of what a 200 is meant to sound like now that yours is fixed?

I can take it to any Renault dealer to look at while it is under warranty isn't that right? I would rather take it to a Renault Sport specialist dealer than back to where I bought it.

Well, just booked it in with the only RS Specialist in Northern Ireland (best option I figured) next Thursday at 11am for a diagnostic check / examination of the car.

Hopefully they hear what I am hearing and acknowledge that the car should not sound the way it does.

Really hope I don't get the "they all sound like that" speech. Maybe Fred or some other resident expert will come along shortly and advise...

A lot of them do sound like that but they shouldn't! Mine now doesn't make the noise and it sounds normal - all you I can now hear is the injectors. I'll post a video of what it sounds like now tomorrow.

I'm pretty sure Renault know exactly what the problem is... I'd advise taking it to the same dealer in case it has to go back, so you're not covering the same thing twice. Also, make sure they give you the paper work for the warranty work, they didn't want to when I asked for it and I had to be pretty forceful.

Yeah, would appreciate the video of how yours sounds afterwards, the only thing is I don't have the metallic tapping sound that is obvious in your video, mine is just very ticky...

Both engines? As in you had two different 200's or one of your engines blew up and you got a new one put in? lol...

Did you ever have any problems with either?

Well, update as promised, was at the RS Specialist dealer this morning and the mechanic I spoke to acknowledged to sound of ticking and a slight screeching/squealing sound from my "belts" area after I pointed him in the right direction.

He believes that a bearing is going in a tensioner but he reckons the ticking and bearing causing the issues is the alternator and not the cam belt.

The car is going back next Saturday when they have parts in and that was the only day that suited me and he said they would take the alternator belt off and let it run briefly to see if the noises stop, if so then he will replace those. If not he said they have some listening equipment to find out exactly what bearing it is etc so whatever needs replacing he said will be replaced.

Pretty happy with that outcome to be honest, he is going with a trial and error method so one way or another I reckon it will be sorted out which is the main thing and it was all pretty pain free.

:)
