clio 172 what will i keep up with?

I don't beleive that a modded Golf, with 10-15bhp more power than a stock Clio 172 would pull any car lengths on it from a standing start. Infact against a standard Clio Cup (which is in the same price bracket of the Golf+remap) I think the Golf would lose a few lengths. But as we weren't talking about Cups, I'll stick with 172s. Getting that heavy Golf off the line with all that torque on it's (assuming the linked one) 115k mile old clutch will be interesting for sure. In a straight line flat out drag from a standing start, power is far more important than torque, because both drivers will be ready and keeping them 'on the boil' so the Clio will be in it's power band.
TBH Gary, every post you made in this thread has been made while you were wearing VAG tinted glasses. Maybe you should take them off.

Not only would a remapped TDi NOT gain on a 172, it would probably stuggle to keep up. Especially if the cars in question were to hit any form of bend in the road. My brother has a live mapped Ibiza Cupra TDi, and its running a lot of power, but it still isnt fast. It just feels fast cos after the 3 second turbo lag, your head gets smashed into the headrest due to the phenominally bad power delivery.

Its all irrelavent anyway, because at the end of the day, golfs are hideous, they handle like boats, and the majority of them seem to be driven by unsavory characters.

Very true.

I'm still chuckling here at the "multiple car lengths" comment - one of those barges would need 300 bhp to pull that over a RS Clio!

He said what else could be maybe get for around the same money. And it matters because if it's very close, then it's just down to the driver. I don't think a PD150 in a Mk4 Golf will remap to 200bhp, more like 180-185 (Based on figures from AMD, Jabba, Revo, AwesomeGTI who use APR software).

Well my 130PD has been mapped to 175bhp and 260 lb/ft torque so im sure that a 150pd will easily reach 200, infact speaking to folk on the forums, i know a lot who have had more, depends if you want a simple 'plug and play' or a custom map.

I make that about 15 seconds to 100mph, and while the handling may be crap, thats also irrelevant, as most folks suspension is one of the first things changed whatever the car.

And no im not seeing all this through rose tinted specs, having owned a clio before i've moved on.

Yes the clio has a poor start but it definitely aint gaining!

This made me think...

Do you think in a 172 you'd be able to beat the stig around the Top Gear track if he was in a Clio 1.2?

I would get my ass handed to me.

You think? I reckon he wouldn't really have a chance against anyone vaguely experienced at driving quick - that's a really massive performance disadvantage he'd have, would be interesting to see though.

great, super, not...............

a 130 tdi will not beat an RS
a 150 tdi will not beat an RS
yes a tuned one will, but my tuned cup will desimate your tuned TDI's all day long.
Meet me at Santa Pod for USC and i'll show you.
I do like the turbo diesels, great for overtaking, i was following a fabia vrs the other day with 3 up and it was very quick when overtaking. however the gears are short, the rev range is short, and the 2nd from last youtube video takes nearly 17 sec to get to 100, my standard cup was doing it in 15.
Also, while i'm at it, yes you may get 175 out of your 130 tdi, the limit is the clutch. One of my best mate had a focus tdci tuned at corten millars, and he was getting stupid bhp and torque, but the clutch was slipping. had to be dropped to 170 or so to stop the clutch from slipping

a slammed saxo wont handle well for starters :p

saxos and 106s are 99% the same in every aspect. Unless you compair the vtr to a rallye where the rallyes had better higher revving set ups.

only real difference between gti and saxo is leather and rear ARB

Yes all very well but then where does it all stop? its all good saying a tuned x will beat a tuned y, F**k me im sure weve all seen the smart car beat the ferrari, some very bold statements just made considering that i have just posted a vid of a tdi beating an rs, and are you speaking from experience? Because i am, and can think of 2 occasions when an rs couldnt keep up and 1 where it wasnt able to pull away from me.

You are comparing a mapped VAG to a mapped ford, theres some difference there, yes the VAGS also have trouble but AFAIK the main culprit is the weaker engine and weaker clutch in the 150pd model, very vew 130's will have any trouble with a clutch after it's been mapped.

My whole posts have been around a mapped tdi against a standard clio, or if you want to be fairer we can have £400 worth of mods on the clio and im still sure the VAG ill come out on top, as long as there are no corners;) .

In any case, i reckon most of it is down to the driver and from the types driving clios around here i reckon im more experienced and dare i say better.

I've never had my car down a strip yet and santa pod is a bit of a trek for me, however if you can make it to crail one day.

ryan that made me lol

every body panel is near enough different and dont handel slammed??

ever heard of rickyp was in the carbon saxo at fcs thats really slammed on 16s and embrasses lots on track.

i agree that its not optimum ride height for saxo's handeling but it comes down to how the driver wants it to react on track IMO

  vtr, 172, s1 rallye
the body styling uses the same shell. Same as a mk1 and mk2 saxo. And the asthetics mean sod all to me, Im talking about the important bits, eg running gear.

everyone allways says their slammed saxo handles well, when infact they have never been in a very well set up car, the track rods are running at a gay angle when slammed which causes bump steer when driven hard on uneven surfaces, thats not handling well imo.

and i know ricky as i moderate a forum he is on. him and the 'bumpstop brigade'

yep thats him and well his saxo and rallye are far from slow as i say it all depends how you want a car to respond.

and as for the saxo handeling well slammed errrmmm if its kept level then maybe but bet 90% are on the arse on the rear and 60s at front and over steers to hell, if you catch what i mean

  vtr, 172, s1 rallye
why having it on its arse is gay. They oversteer as standard, its slower round a track with the arse end out.

if you really want to go arse happy bung a 25mm arb in with 23mm bars, although youd need groupN dampers for that :p

- This made me laugh...suggesting you never have to worry about M3's or anything as slow as that...True comment though.

Look at what 1/4 times the above cars run. Chris N Nics cup pissed all over Type R's and scoobys down the 1/4, vids were on here a while back.
I had a play with a RS Focus and I used to have slighty tuned 182. Feck all in it fella till 100 choc buttons.

As for racing M3's you'd have to be some sort of tool.

I would say that the strip is the worst place to take on these cars as the Clio lacks power.

Are you seriously telling me that a 172 will beat these cars to 90?

Evo stats say (to 60 only):

Clio: 7.1 seconds
WRX (05 model): 5.5 seconds
Focus ST (Not even the RS!): 6.8
Type R (05 model): 6.8 seconds

mmmm.

And nothing in it on the road up to 100 when following an RS? Top gear times put the RS at 132.2 and Clio cup at 133.8 for the lap.

I think you are wrong in every respect.
