Clio 172 Cambelt cover removal

  Escort Cosworth
Hi all, I am working on a Clio 172 for the first time and have decided to join this forum for any help or advice andyone can give me.

Firstly the engine I am working on had done its cambelt in so need to strip the top end off first to assess the damage.

I have got as far as dropping the cambelt off and am just in the process of dropping off the cam cover but it appears to be held in on the left hand side. Do I need to drop the cambelt pullies off aswell? The timing is going to be way out on the engine so didn't see the need in purchasing the correct tool for the moment due to not knowing wether the engine is salvagable or not.

Any help / advice would be appreciated.

Cheers
Dave

The top section of the belt cover is also the offside engine mount.

You'll need to support the engine from below, then remove the cover.

I jacked the lump up from under the subframe, so i could get the belt off in situ. The engine needs to come up on the offside to give you room.

Also make sure you use a locking tool which goes into the other side of the block... and if you're using a genuine belt kit, replace the rubber grommets too.

Cool, that's spot on. Thanks for the reply. I have the rear pulley off and just on my way to pick up a 14mm allen key.

pullies HAVE to come off first, don't forget you will need the special tools when putting it back together

Thanks for all the help so far. Is there some sort of guide I can use to put the top end back together? i.e. timing everything up from scratch as I've had to replace the rear pulley as it had notches in it.
