Brand new member, don't own a clio just yet.....

Hi lovely clio sport people.

I thought i would sign up to this forum as i've got an urge for a 182 and this would be the best place for advice.

i have recently had to sell my two fun cars (bmw e46 coupe and a fiesta st) and get a family car as we found out my girlfriend was 8 weeks pregnant back in november, but now we have the situation under control i want to get myself something fun again, so i'm after a 182.

i thought i would introduce myself on here as i'll be a regular user when i do get one. what common faults/things apart from the obvious should i be looking for on these clios? i've never owned a french car.

Are yozzasport still the best exhausts?

Any advice will be welcome

Welcome aboard mate!

Take your time buying a 182 and make sure you get a good one. Look for one that's been serviced by a specialist.

Our 'for sale' section is a good place to start looking. You could also try speaking to @R-Sport Cars LTD who is a very well respected CS trader.

Yozza's are awesome but if you're looking for something a little more subtle go for the newer Yozza known commonly as the BTM.

The Clio 172-182 isn't a very problematic car and there isn't anything I'd say has a high failure rate..

It's more your tyres, clutch, cambelt interval, brakes, exhaust condition etc that need checking when your looking..

Normal stuff.

Can't stress how important service history is and make sure receipts are present and verified for cambelt and auxiliary belts.

Thanks for the info, i haven't had a serious look yet, just general ebay browsing.

Trying to see what common mods are etc.
I've always loved 182's, i wish i'd of got one instead of my st.

My cousin has just purchased a 182 and let me have a go in it last week, love how they take off when the cam kicks in :smile:

Yes Miltek do one. Quite a subtle sound. People go for that or Scorpion if they want something a little louder than standard.

Make sure you look at your exhaust hangers as the rubber normally sags. Cheap mod is to whack a load of tiger seal in them and let them set.

Yozza's are awesome but rather loud/raspy. They also go for around £400+ second hand.

Yeah I had a look on eBay for a yozzasport but there wasn't a single one on there.
Any good local tuning companies? K-tec are miles away from me.

Sounds mental but I'm assuming it gets annoying? Lol.
Like the sound of the miltek, I think the yozzasport will be too raspy for my liking

There's a decent Renault specialist in Nuneaton, and as for re-mapping I'd say go down the RS Tuner route first. It's an easy option and really does make a difference

Around 33 which I'm still getting now. Can be a lot more on steady motorway runs though

Welcome to the forum . I would seriously consider getting a 172/182. I am loving mine at the moment, it is a real peach of a car.

However, I would not overlook some costs. Ensure that the cambelts are done by someone reputable with evidence to prove in addition to the car not being an abused example ; they can be real moneypits but that can go for any car. They are an absolute hoot when on song though.

People will say that I am losing the plot now TBH. I used to prefer a 205 initially to one of these ; it is slowly going the other way ; you have 85% of the fun factor of the 205 but with slightly more refinement and a quicker engine, a little like a 205 GTi-6.

The above may sound harsh but I am being honest about the Clios being a pain. Mine has been great so far touchwood ; I did not however set out to go and buy and Clio and alot of cars I saw (Audi TTs, Volvo T5s, Mini Cooper Ss R53s) were dogs.

With that said (I'll grab my coat after this) have you considered modding the Fiesta ST? THe Duaratec engine in those things are superb, and respond very well to simply basic bolt on mods (I.e an improve exhaust manifold (they are horribly compromised by Ford) and a Cosworth inlet manifold. Of course it may affect your insurance.

My st had a full miltek system. Dreamscience map and mountune cais. It was around 170bhp but it just wasn't fun enough. in fact it was quite boring to drive.
I don't know what it is about the clio but iv always wanted one and they're too cheap to now buy now lol . I understand they can be money pits but it's not going to be a daily driver more of a show/weekend fun car.

As people have said - cambelt is the big one - it's a £500 job on it's own without the "dephaser" pulley which is probably worth changing at the same time.

Either budget and get it done at a specialist yourself (cheaper car), or get one already done, but I've noticed a load of people saying "done at a mates garage so no receipt to prove" and all that b****cks.

Aside from that, usual wear and tear imo.

I'll bare that in mind bud. I have seen a lot of the adverts saying the belts have been done etc.
I'm hoping to go and look at a few within the next week or so so I'll be sure to make sure there's proof of the belts being done.

If the ST didn't satisfy you with 170BHP then maybe the Clio is the car for you . They are lively for sure! If I am honest I prefer the power delivery of a stock 172 (mine has been remapped ; it is easier to drive on a daily basis and it does have a superb spread of torque but that 'kick' from 5k onwards with a stock 172 is just something, it is on attribute that is missing from the 182s, they are more of a smoother transition.

The fact that they are cheap makes like easier - I like to drive my cars, not polish them for eternity.
