172 burning smell

  RS mk2 172
I have a 53 plate 172 and noticed a strong electrical burning smell yesterday whilst driving . It seems to be coming from the front offside and was wondering could it be the alternator?
I notice it constantly and so far the charge light is going out after start up with full electrical load applied and I want to hear from others who have had this problem before I go getting my tools out.
This is not a clutch smell, nor is it oil on the exhaust, my instinct is that it is the alternator but dont want to go buying one to find its something else.

Also meant to add it has a slight "whirring" belt type noise but the smell is that of electrical burning and not rubber suggesting possibility of the alternator bearing maybe?

if it's a bearing in the altinator or a tensioner on the belt then the whirring will sound a little like supercharger wine and change pitch with the revs.
No idea about an electrical burning smell tbh
