172/182 Turbo Conversion Kit - £2600

  172 cup TT
lovely in theory but i bet my right arm that from date of installation to 6 months later something gives - gearbox/clutch/engine.... repair + repeat

From what I've read and understand the kit will turn any 172/182 into a 220bhp beast even when running only the standard cat and exhaust, so with the turbo fitted I'd expect a decent decat/sport cat and exhaust system would push another few ponies from it.
Don't forget the CR won't be chnaged 220hp will be abot the limit better RON fuela nd you can run a bit more boost etc but you'll hit the limit very quikc myabe on very good fuel and mapped 230~2450hp but the second you stick lower spec fuel in you'd have to have the ecu recognise the chnage and adjust else you'll det the engine a lot be interesting to see what safety margin there running since stock injectors run about about 208hp in theory and whilst there using uprated I wonder how much.
1. Fuel consumption, when not booting it.
3. If the boost could be notched up any further, although guessing that would kill a clutch/internals/box pretty quickly.
I'd be careful with MPG after al some cliam a 172 will do 40mpg driven with some gusto I've yet to see one though.

The higher boost will be a problem with det as I wrote ealier.

Will this be suitable for a ph1 172? Just thinking ahead to my next car
The parts will be the ECU etc will be the issue sill a mapper could use the stc ECU to run it with a boost sensor so you'd just telll the supplier you want some some ££ as you don't want his ecu mapps etc.
sounds like the perfect compomise, 7psi is low boost so it shouldnt brake anything, im guessing it will use a thicker head gasket, or maybe even standard.
The torque will kill the box over time that a massive increase.

I'm sure they didn't chnage the CR so no cheap head gasget wedge trick or lower CR pistosn as to save ££.
I guess the usual problems with gearbox would emerge about repeatably hard use?
Yep that will be the issue plus clutch won't last long if its used so add a hundred or so for that plus 7 hours to fit a new clutch I'd stick an uprated one in before even bother driving it.

How the hell are they going to lower the compression ratio
They won't saves cost and makes it bolt on as such else lowering the CR means either stripping the engine for pistons or chnaging the cambelt for the head gasget multi trick which becomes expensive.
Bodies and cams would be more exciting I'd say.
I'd agree would be a nicer car to rev but this might be more usable at the lower rpm.

Im starting a new job this month which is gonna land me sh!t loads of spare cash over the next few months so Im seriously thinking about getting this kit :D

edde just because of the high comp ratio doesn't mean you're approaching the RON limit!

no but higher octane fuel=more resistance to det therefore more scope for boost without lowering cr.

but if the mapper knows his arse from his elbow comp ratio becomes meaningless

you could map a WRC car to run on 89RON fuel, hell even an F1 car

by altering ignition advance- at the expensive of power+torque.
big article on it in this months fast ford..
ranging from generic crap fuel up to shell top of the range petrol by adding the amount of advance that could be added before det was detected meant a gain of about 20hp.

  Lionel Richie
yep true, but this is the thing, you don't NEED to run fancy fuel!

it makes me smile everytime i'm at track, someone will turn up having spent thousands on what they "think" is the best, and still get nailed by a 12year old williams

fast ford - take the reyland lot, honnestly their cars arent that quick IMO, the old spec escort (600 odd bhp) was lapping 1min 30 odd round donnignton yet everyone worshipped that car!

i've seen std cups go round quicker than that!

if the kit is reliable, id buy it. i dont do flying starts in my car and dont nail it until its rolling. would be mucho fun, for minimal outlay.

When buying the kit, this will be the way to drive it to keep the box in one piece .

franx, make sure you update the thread with your thoughts please about the car - be very interested to hear them.

Cheers.

Update !

It was a 200km drive to Maurice at MB, after which some good coffee and time for chat, questions and explanation.

Interesting fact about the car they built; it's a full option one (172 mk2) with airco, esp, side-airbags, and some more things i might forget to mention (seats are heavier than cup). Therefore it's the heaviest of the 172 kinds weighing 1100 kilo+ and it's got giant 17 inch wheels under there...

The car is a rocket  ! Such a nice torque from about 2500 rpm (even lower) , and it stays there all along the way up. I was trying to feel if there were any "dips" in power along the range but i could'nt . We stayed on the back roads, no highways but i did'nt even want to ; the "go-kart" feel of the car on these roads did it for me. Mind you we did take it to extreme speeds, after which we had to BRAKE HARD hahahhha

The reason they took the full option car was to see if everything would fit with such little space left. A lot more people here drive these cars, instead of the Spartan Cups with nothing on them, so it will be a bigger market for them.

I'm thinking once my Cup will be fitted with this kit (with the 150kg-ish weightdifference and 16inch wheels) it will be absolutely amazing.

These guys want to deliver quality so their name will be known in a positive way, talking to Maurice gave me the feeling that he believes in his product

I think i going to have some stress from my lady soon  ;)

so they are in holland right?

so youbuy the kit, which includes everything? and you have to fit it your self???

ummm so maintance is all done by your self??

ive still got one years warranty left, so they would loose all warranty

You may as well get throtal body's for 220bhp + no turbo lag.

If you want a turbo kit get the K-Tec Racing Stage 2 turbo kit! Utherwise there aint much point.

Bodies are mike from rentech's I think.

I wanna know if this kit fits on the ph1 otherwise I'd have to have the manifold ported or a custom one made...

Got a ph1 with a formula renault lump and the cup setup so this kit would be a nice addition :D

i wonder how much extra power i would have in fitting this kit, in addition to the GDI single body kit - for those who dont know

http://www.greydevilindustries.com/products/product.asp?id=20747

im sure with a bit of messing around with the silicone hoses it will fit straight in. the car was on 209bhp with a 2.25'' exhaust system but is now changed to 2.5'' so it would be interesting to see what this kit would have to offer!

It seems ludaprix aint satisfied with his cam conversion lol .How could he be? The discernible gain from that conversion, although noticeable wont be mind blowing. I'd say to him, go for the balls out foxon jobbie, if he has the nerve. Your single body will then be redundant, but Andy will take that in account in the final reckoning. lol

Certainly is, and I'd certainly be happier with a kit fitted by my own hand than risk handing my car not to mention my money to a 2 bit part time grease monkey.

LOL Ralph , stop being contentious, I know it's late and we're all a bit apres pub, but Andy is no what you said. I'd say he will be in the future the equiavelent in Reno tuning as what Dave Vizzard was to A series in the past.

Yeah I'm mean 2.8 secs to 60mph and 194.7mph top end isn't really that quick...

Ahh you make the assumption that I'm talking about GDi and Andy, and the past comment of mine was not aimed specifically at him or his company.

i believe the reason ludaprix went for the single body was not power based but a compromise of power and keeping aircon....:)

but now its winter!!! ;-)
