172/182 Turbo Conversion Kit - £2600

  SLK 350
Well after reading up about this in the Fastchip thread, I thought such a thing should have its own dedicated thread - so here it is!

From what I've read and understand the kit will turn any 172/182 into a 220bhp beast even when running only the standard cat and exhaust, so with the turbo fitted I'd expect a decent decat/sport cat and exhaust system would push another few ponies from it.

Reason I'm vaguely excited about it is because it's the first kit I've seen that is actually affordable and justifyable in my book, so I maybe looking at this over the next few months with interest, although I don't feel winter would really lend itself very well to such investment.

Anyway here's the spec and a few pictures nicked off of the other thread:

So thoughts and opinions?

  RS RIP
Kind of late mate, 2 or 3 threads discussing this already ;)

I'm having a spin in their converted RS this Thursday. Testing is all done , it has withstood the track-thrashing so now they're comfortable selling it. A product which they are strongly enthousiastic about !

I will defo post up my testdrive-experience !

Indeed, for some reason ITB's @ 3.5k or BBPT Turbo conversion 5k(?) really just isn't a worthy investment for the return IMHO and the value of the cars. But £2.5k seems on the money for me, just thinking of getting a loan and sorting something out in a few months to cover it.

Need some more details from Henk really, just wondering if it's even remotely fittable in a home mechanic environment and if there's sufficient documentation to fit it oneself, a box of parts and an invoice would leave me scratching my arse!

Would also like to know what effects this would have on the following:

1. Fuel consumption, when not booting it.
2. Typical 0-60 time for such a kit.
3. If the boost could be notched up any further, although guessing that would kill a clutch/internals/box pretty quickly.

Well, this thursday will be a test for ME, see how drivability is maintained/enhanced to my experience. We will probably be taking her to some of the dutch (always flat !) curvy backroads of south-east Holland, which are the roads to check out it's torque, hitting it hard coming out of curves . Want a general feel of regular and fast driving.

For the rest i will be trusting them on their professional opinion from testing on reliablity and such, they seem professional enough.

** Based in Southeast Holland, will be 100 mile drive for me.

sounds like the perfect compomise, 7psi is low boost so it shouldnt brake anything, im guessing it will use a thicker head gasket, or maybe even standard.

Seems a great price for such gains....

I guess the usual problems with gearbox would emerge about repeatably hard use?

So 220bhp from a std engine...what sort of things would a decatted exhaust etc 172 push out. This looks very nice and as said not silly power

Well it says that the torque comes in at 2k so it should be quite nice having that low down power and then coming on cam at 5k so pulling again.

At the end of the day its down to how you treat it, drive it like you stole it and your gunna get more problems than someone who only gives it some now and then!

keep us posted with this one coz its seems interesting!! as said the boost level is low enuff not to give u massive problems unless u abuse it and the power gains are good for the price!!

LOL diy turbo installation. If you had to get some one to fit and fettle it you'd be nearly up to Ktec price.

Change of manifold will be the hardest bit. Everything else will be straight forward, plug and play looms, pipe work.... easy. I plummed in a front mount on my punto GT a few years ago, easy enough.

  Megane Trophy
my concerns :

How the hell are they going to lower the compression ratio

Personally id stay well clear of it, but if you guys want to try on your car il be interested ha ha :)

  Megane Trophy
you wont need to on a low boost kit?

i think you will find that you need to

on the nova 1.6 gte we built that ran 7-10 psi

with a thicker head gasket to lower the CR
Microswitch to trigger a 5th injector to deliver more fuel on turbo boost

that was cheapish DIY build

  Roadster Coupe
Its still alot of money really for the gain. get a diesel and get it remapped. lol only cost me £340 and gained 60HP. My golf is running at 190HP with 420Nm!! lol

  Roadster Coupe
Its not quicker on the corners but in a straight line its beats the clio. the clio has the edge at silly speeds but the clio wont beat it on a rolling start.
